minor lines, 4/12/09

AAA: Fresno defeated Portland 5-4
(allowing all four runs in the 8th inning)

Fresno: LF Scott McClain: 3 for 3, HR, BB
Fresno: 3B Ryan Rohlinger: 1 for 4, HR, SO
Fresno: 2B Matt Downs: 2 for 4, HR, SO
Portland: LF Chad Huffman: 2 for 4, HR, SO

Fresno: RHP Billy Sadler: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
Fresno: LHP Pat Misch: 2.0 IP, 1 BB, 1 K--1 HB
Portland: LHP Wade LeBlanc: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K--2 HR, 3 WP

McClain had a big game, reaching base four times.  He, Rohlinger and Downs each hit their first HR of the year.  The nearly 24-year-old Huffman, whom BA ranked as the Padres' #23 prospect, had the only multi-hit line for the Beavers.  He hit his first triple-A HR.

Sadler had a very effective start, although he threw just over half his pitches for strikes (43 of 79).  He and Misch held the Beavers to just one hit through the first six innings.  LeBlanc, whom BA ranked the Padres' #12 prospect, had a rough season debut.

AA: Connecticut lost to Portland 6-1

Connecticut: 3B David Maroul: 2 for 4
Connecticut: C Jackson Williams: 1 for 3, 2B, BB, 2 SO, PB
Portland: CF Josh Reddick: 1 for 4, HR, BB, 3 SO

Connecticut: RHP Jesse Foppert: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 4 K--1 HR
Connecticut: LHP Ben Snyder: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 3 K
Connecticut: RHP Dan Griffin: 2.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 K--1 HR
Connecticut: RHP Waldis Joaquin: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 K

With the Defenders' only multi-hit line, Maroul had two of the team's five hits.  Williams also reached base twice.  The Red Sox' Reddick homered for the third consecutive day.

Not a good day for Defenders pitchers.  Foppert faced 13 batters and got 7 outs.  Snyder saw 14 batters and got 8 outs.  Griffin got 6 outs from 10 batters, while Joaquin got just 3 outs from 6 batters.

A+: San Jose defeated Stockton 10-0
(after taking an early lead with four runs in the 1st inning)

San Jose: SS Brendan Crawford: 3 for 3, HR,
San Jose: C Buster Posey: 2 for 4, HR, GiDP
San Jose: DH Conor Gillaspie: 3 for 5, 2B
San Jose: RF Roger Kieschnick: 3 for 4,
San Jose: 1B Michael Ambort: 1 for 3, HR, SO

San Jose: LHP Craig Clark: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K
San Jose: RHP Craig Whitaker: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K

A big day for the Giants' offense.  Crawford, Gillaspie and Kieschnick each had three of the Giants' seventeen hits.  Crawford's .583 AVG leads the organization.  He also had his 2nd HR, while Posey and Ambort had their 1st HRs.

Clark had a very successful Cal League debut, with four shutout innings and a 7/1 GO/FO line, although he did allow more than one baserunner per inning.  Whitaker, the supplemental first rounder back in 2003, had perhaps the best outing of his pro career, facing the minimum twelve batters in four innings of relief.  He had an 8/1 FO/GO line.  Stockton scored just one run in the four-game series, which came in the 9th inning of their season-opening 5-1 loss.

A-: Augusta defeated Savannah 11-4
(scoring all eleven runs in the 2nd through 5th innings to secure the first win of the season)

Augusta: 3B Charlie Culberson: 2 for 4, HBP, SO
Augusta: DH C.J. Ziegler: 3 for 5, 2 2B, SO
Augusta: 1B Josh Mazzola: 3 for 4, BB
Savannah: SS Wilmer Flores: 2 for 5, 2B

Augusta: RHP Mike Loree: 5.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 4 K

Ziegler and Mazzola bounced back from their hat tricks the previous day to each record three of the GreenJackets' thirteen hits.  Culberson, who also reached base three times, was the other GreenJacket with a multi-hit line on Easter Sunday.  The Mets' 17-year-old Flores had two hits for the second straight day.

Loree started his 2009 season with five scoreless innings before being touched up for a couple runs in the 6th inning.

This San Jose team is not disappointing so far. Wow.

Is there any way McClain could latch on any team, if we were in another system, or is he generally regarded as AAAA?

He hit for power in three seasons in Japan, but hasn’t had a long term shot to play in MLB. Without that, I don’t know if he could be considered a major league talent. Now that he’s closing in on age 40, it’s unlikely he’d get that shot.

Yeah, at this point he’s basically fucked. I wish he had Aurilia’s spot on the team.

Low 90's on the fastball

He also had an intriguing looking slider and changeup.

Oh, yea, and he’s throwing sidearm. Apparently, he’s changed things during the offseason to turn around his career.

What’s his status at this point? Seems like he should already have passed his 40 man deadline. Will he be a 6 year minor league FA after this season?

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

by Roger on Apr 13, 2009 9:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would seem right. Drafted in 2003, he would have six full seasons from 2004-2009, right? Now as long as there is no rule about which I don’t know for how time on the DL may delay his reaching minor league free agent status …

by mxmob33 on Apr 13, 2009 10:59 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not quite a full sidearm, but lower than 3/4's

Let’s call it 15/16ths.

SFDugout.com is BACK! See the Top 50 Giants Prospects!

by BruteSentiment on Apr 13, 2009 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nit pick

Maybe I’ve been looking at the phrase incorrectly, I presumed 3/4’s meant halfway between straight over the top (4/4ths?) and sidearm (1/2?). That is, the more straight the motion, the closer to 1.0 you got.

That would make somebody who throws slightly lower than 3/4’s about 5/8’s. Anybody have any idea about this burning question?

Boy are you sorry you asked. Anything minus would be from the left side, assuming a right-handed pitcher. A contortionist might achieve -1/8, but not much more than that, I’m guessing. And anything over 4/4’s, or 1.0, would simply cause the pitcher to fall down during the attempt.

And yes, I have thought of this before. It’s sad, I know.

Also...Turpen hit 95.

There was one gun reading which looked like 97, but could’ve been 90 (hard to tell with lights out on the speed board). But still, there were definitely 93-95 readings throughout his outing. Granted, just eight pitches, but still.

From Scott Ostler on sfgate.com:

Ah, but he’s still a kid. Villalona, 5-for-11 the first three games, with a homer, comes to bat Sunday in the first, with one out and runners on first and second. He lofts an easy pop to the first baseman and jogs down the line.

Skeels immediately jerks Villalona from the game.

“I needed to let him know that’s not part of how we play baseball here,” Skeels said.

When the Velez experiment is over I hope they bring Downs up. He can play the infield positions and would be an improvement to what we have. I have got to get down to San Jose and see the young stars. I am hoping that Posey is in Fresno by the end of the season. Why is Sadler starting? It wasn’t a bad performance I just wonder why.

The Giants want Sadler to develop his third pitch:

The Giants threw Sadler into his new role to help him develop a change-up and become a three-pitch pitcher. He threw mostly live fastballs Sunday, topping out at 95 mph, but used the change-up 10 times and mixed in his sharp curve.

Crawford is spanking the ball. Skeels did the right thing to sit the kid. Promise he will never do that again. Good to see the Giants trying to square Sadler away. Getting him more innings to gain command. Sadler previously was a starter.

Charlie Culberson found his stroke and JC Perez is hitting third for Augusta. Hope he takes to 2b.

Sorry if this has been covered but

does anyone know if Posey is calling the games himself or if he still takes his signs from the dugout?

by dogdays on Apr 13, 2009 4:05 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Someone please tell us he is calling his own game

I spoke to Buster at the beginning of the month and he emphatically told me he was to be calling pitches this season.

Sweet. Even more impressive that they have only given up one run in four games then

Those signals weren't for Posey

…they were for the Paula Garces lookalike in the stands.

I sure hope Gerald didn’t pick up on those signals…

Hey hey

Save that for the men’s room.

I guess so. Amy Klobuchar doesn’t seem like quite the type to fool around in a men’s room.

I’m betting she “missed” the sign.

…as usual, no hit, and she ran.
