San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres, Apr 12, 2009 1:05 PM PDT

Google Image result for "No Sweep":

I...words fail.

I really, really think that the Padres are a miserable team, so a sweep would be quite the thumb in the eye. There's no shame in losing to Jake Peavy, but that still means a decent team should take two out of three. And there is great, painful shame in losing to Scott Hairston -- the kind of shame that doesn't scrub off with a little Lava soap. Deep, burning shame. Shame all over your face as a loved one walks through the door, aghast, horrified at the pungent, dripping shame across your shamed visage.

So on Timmy, on Pablo, on Travis, on Bengie. Win a damn game.

Seriously

I mean, I’m sure that Bochy knows that

A) Schierholtz offense > Velez offense.
B) Winn defense > Velez defense.
C) Schierholtz’s future is more important to this franchise than Velez’s future.

ok

Basically, while Nate’s offense may be better than Velez, it may not be much better. Winn’s defense in center is better than Velez, but it may not be that much better. And Schierholtz may very well not be an important part of the team’s future.

Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

by irwin on Apr 12, 2009 12:45 PM PDT up reply actions

ok, BUT

while nate’s offense may not necessarily be much better than velez, it is most certainly not worse. winn’s defense may not be that much better than velez, but it is most certainly not worse. And schierholtz may not be a part of this teams future, but velez almost certainly is not.

by scottishgiants on Apr 12, 2009 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

hmm

Question:
Assuming Schierholtz is not good enough to start in RF for a contender, how much value do you think he has as a reserve? Might, because of his speed and “versatility”, Velez be more valuable as a reserve?

Mostly, if two players aren’t very far apart in talent, playing the lesser player isn’t an idiotic decision by an means. Sometimes, coached just play hunches or want to see what a player can do. Schierholtz is pretty much a known quantity, but I doubt the team believes that it knows what it has with Velez.

nope, not impossible

But the same thing is true of Velez – he is probably just as likely as Nate to develop the additional skills he needs to be more than a role player. And he has a skill that Nate clearly can’t develop, absent a trip to BALCO.

Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

by irwin on Apr 12, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Velez provides no defensive value. Schierholtz does. The only thing Velez has going for him is speed, but he dosen’t steal bases well and is a terrible outfield defender. What is this value you speak of?

by cornball on Apr 12, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

defense

Schierholtz’s defense is questionable – he has an average RF arm and OK range with not great routes and instincts.

Velez showed the ability to steal in the minors and may be able to learn major league pitchers with some experience. Like Schierholtz, he may also learn to be an acceptable defender. I remember watching Nate take some seriously bad routes in San Jose. Sometimes, it just takes a bit of experience. He can play 2b, albeit not very well, but presumably better than Nate. Positional flexibility does have some value.

Mostly, my point is still that both of them are probably career backups and playing one over the other is not a big deal at all. Especially if you are trying to see what you have in one of them.

Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

by irwin on Apr 12, 2009 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

They’ve never given Nate a chance to show what he can do in the bigs, and his ceiling is likely higher than Velez’. My point is, Velez was very not good last year and they still don’t know what kind of player Nate can be.

Joe Martinez: My fingers are crossed and my palms are together for you.
When it's all said and done, America will be remembered for three things: The Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Apr 12, 2009 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions

ok...

But why would they give him a chance? His minor league numbers do not lend one to believe that he will be an average MLB RF. Remember, he was playing in the PCL.

Sure, I might have started him over signing Rowand, but that assumes that Winn is an average defender in CF. I don’t really think he is, but some people do. If you [Sabean] believe that Winn is not a MLB CF, then you would be faced with the prospects of three OF [Lewis, Nate, Winn] who are perceived to be below average defensively and two who are unproven with the bat.

Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

I disagree strongly

As befits a former 3B, Nate has an excellent arm. I think he’d be an excellent OF for us. But we’ll never know until we give him a chance. That should have been last year, but we wasted that opportunity.

Young is exactly the kind of pitcher we need Nate hitting against. I find Bochy’s decision indefensible.

Velez in CF is definitely stupider. But I’ve, now for the first time, realized that the guy who’s OBPed over .301 only once in the past seven years is actually going to, you know, play once in while.

Now that I think about it, why not just have Burriss at SS, Velez at 2B, and some combination of Schierholtz, Winn, and Lewis in the OF? That would be a big improvement on offense (Nate>>>Uribe), about the same defensively, and would have more kids playing.

2-3 - No game has had a margin of victory or defeat smaller than 3 runs thus far.

Adopted Giant: Daryl "Fat But Awesome" Maday - Scoreless 4 innings for first start in Norwich. Nice.

In all the excitement, let’s not lose track of the fact that the Giants DO NOT HAVE A HIT AGAINST PADRES STARTER CHRIS YOUNG. He is throwing what some would call a NO HITTER, in that the Giants have NO HITS against him, him being Chris Young, who has NOT GIVEN UP A HIT YET TODAY.

Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
