minor lines, 4/10/09

AAA: Fresno lot to Portland 5-4 (10 innings)
(after Fresno tied the game in the bottom of the 9th inning)

Fresno: CF Mike McBryde: 3 for 5, SB
Fresno: 1B Jesus Guzman: 2 for 5, 2B, SO
Portland: CF Will Venable: 3 for 5, 3B, 2B, SO, E
Portland: 1B Kyle Blanks: 3 for 5, 2B, SO, E

Fresno: RHP Kevin Pucetas: 5.0 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 3 K--3 WP
Fresno: RHP Osiris Matos: 1.0 IP
Fresno: RHP Felix Romero: 2.0 IP, 4 K

McBryde's three singles were half of the Grizzlies' six hits.  Guzman had two hits.  Blanks, who is arguably the Padres' top prospect, had three hits, as did Venable, who had 110 AB in the majors last year.

Pucetas had less than a quality start in his debut in the upper minors.  Matos and Romero combined for a 0/5 GO/FO line in three perfect innings of relief.  The 28-year-old Romero who pitched last year in the Orioles' organization had an impressive debut in the Giants organization striking out four of the six batters he faced.

AA: Connecticut lost to to Portland 3-2
(allowing a run in the both the 8th and 9th innings)

Connecticut: RF Eddy Martinez-Esteve: 2 for 4, 2 2B, CS
Connecticut: 1B Brett Pill: 2 for 4, 2B, SO
Connecticut: 3B David Maroul: 0 for 3, 3 SO
Portland: CF Josh Reddick: 4 for 5, HR, 2B
Portland: 1B Lars Anderson: 2 for 4, BB

Connecticut: RHP Brooks McNiven: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K--1 WP
Connecticut: LHP Jesse English: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 K
Connecticut: RHP Waldis Joaquin: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB

EME and Pill each had two of the Defenders' seven hits, all of which came against the Sea Dogs' starting pitcher. The Defenders only batter to reach base in the final four innings reached on an error.  A year ago, EME had just 21 XBH, so two doubles in this game seems like a good sign.  Maroul struck out in all three trips to the plate.  The Red Sox' Reddick, who is generally considered among the top 100 prospects in baseball, had four hits, including a game-tying HR to lead off the 8th inning.  Anderson, the Red Sox' top prospect, reached base three times.

McNiven had a short but effective start.  Two of the three Defenders relievers were added to the Giants' 40-man roster last November--English and Joaquin.  English appeared as a reliever after making 26 starts a year ago.  Joaquin retired just four of the nine batters he faced.

A+: San Jose defeated Stockton 4-0

San Jose: SS Brendan Crawford: 1 for 4, HR, SO
San Jose: C Buster Posey: 1 for 3, BB
San Jose: 1B Angel Villalalona: 2 for 3

San Jose: LHP Madison Bumgarner: 6.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K--1 HB
San Jose: RHP Daniel Turpen: 1.0 IP, 1 K

Crawford, the Giants' 4th round pick last year, had his first pro HR.  Villalona was the lone Giant with multiple hits.  Posey also reached base twice.

The stats suggest that Bumgarner was fairly dominant in his Cal League debut.  He had a 7/6 GO/FO line.  Turpen had a strikeout and two groundouts in a perfect 9th inning.

A-: Augusta lost to Savannah 5-2

Augusta: CF Francisco Peguero: 3 for 4, 2B
Augusta: C Matt Klimas: 1 for 3, HBP
Savannah: DH Joshua Satin: 3 for 4

Augusta: LHP Ari Ronick: 4.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 0 K

Batting leadoff, the 20-year-old Peguero had three hits.  Klimas was the only other GreenJacket to reach base twice.  Satin, whom the Mets drafted in the 6th round out of UC Berkeley last summer, had three hits.

Ronick, who had a 4.05 ERA in the NWL last summer, was roughed up a bit in his full-season debut, allowing three runs in the 4th inning.

I still have hope for EME. Dodd is killing him. He was pretty good on the road last year and terrible at Dodd. .330/.391/.478 with 19 extra base hits on the road. .266/.387/.277 with 2 extra base hits at home.

EME= CS

Was that a pickoff or strike out/throw out or something?

Here is the note from the recap.

With Bobby Felmy batting, Eddy Martinez-Esteve picked off and caught stealing 3rd base, catcher Mark Wagner to second baseman Ryan Khoury to third baseman Jorge Jimenez.

Saturday April 11th Connecticut won it’s game 10-4. While EME only went 1-5 it was his first HR of the season.

Pill also had a couple more hits today. He now has 6 hits so far with 4 doubles.

I know this is looking a little too far ahead

If EME pulls a TI (ie starts hitting, not going to jail), do they send him to AAA?
Fresno still has to make space for McPherson.

I’m much more interested in what EME does than anything Horwitz or Timpner could do.
But he is limited to LF and DH, so where does he fit in?

by DesertFox on Apr 11, 2009 10:11 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

EME is the starting RF this season for AA Connecticut with Bobby Felmy the starter in LF. In three games EME has two assists already this season.

I’m not really that interested in EME, but yeah, I’d put him ahead of Horwitz or Timpner.

somehow

I think the Giants totally ignore his ability to draw walk, hence they look at his stats and think that he is no different than those two

Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

Madison Bumgarner

Excellent Hi A debut. Only 62 pitches for 6 innings with ZERO walks. Outstanding. McBryde is hitting and so is Jackson Williams. Keep hacking EME – one day someone will take notice.

I’m disappointed with Madbum. I expected at least 8k.

ANY pitcher who can pitch 6 shutout innings with zero BBs and only throw 62 pitches has pitched an outstanding 6 innings. With that PC the pitcher should be able to go 8/9 innings.

Come on. David Cone only needed 88 pitches to throw a perfect game. Madbum was on pace to throw 93 for a complete game. He is not living up to expectations. :)

MadBum

The bit of the game I listened to led to the same conclusion as your stats… man among boys.

I switched over from the Scott Hairston show after 6 innings… and started wondering if I should spend more time listening to them and less to the AAAA team…

good game

Sat around 92-93, ranged from 89-96. Only threw ~4-5 breaking balls and 1 or 2 change-ups. He needs to work on getting on top of the curve a bit more. His FB has tremendous tail to it. I hope someone can teach him a cut fastball to compliment it – that would make a devastating combo. He was very good at not leaving many pitches in the middle of the plate and got hitters to swing through a lot of fastballs. He looked almost as impressive as Cain when I saw him K 14.

He has a very good pickoff move and it is easy to see how he picked off so many last year.

Villalona’s hits were bloopers that fooled the outfielders because you expect the ball to fly off his bat. Crawford’s homer was a shot. Noonan seems to be a legit 6’3 and Villalona looks about 6’1", but Anvil does seem quite athletic. Gillaspie will probably never hit for any power – think left-handed Frandsen w/ a few more walks. Noonan’s errors were on easy plays.

As a whole, the team looked awful against Hernandez’s curveball.

Thanks for the details on his velocity. I read a report that said he was only throwing in the high 80s and I was concerned that he would struggle as he moved up.

re

I have that same concern – but I still have it. Generally, a lefty that sits at 92-93 is a very good prospect, one that sits at 95-96 is an elite one.

Pedro Feliz would look great in Dodger Blue.

I agree, but...

You can’t judge a guy too much on one start, especially this early in the year. And even if that’s where his fastball ends up, and he struggles as he moves up — which I think he will, no matter what his velocity — he probably needs that challenge to force him to lean more heavily on the off-speed pitches, which should help him improve. Ironically, I’m actually a little anxious to see him struggle, just a bit, so he can attempt to make that next step. it won’t be until then that we find out how good he really can be. Of course, it would be just great if he made it to AAA or even the majors before that happened.

I agree – I think the small parks in the cal league should teach him something, but I also fear that SJ Muni and Dodd Stadium might lead to bad habits

dang

could i re-draft mike mcbryde.

Aggressive promotion for a non-prospect pays off! On another note, that Connecticut team is boring as hell.

eh

McBryde I wouldn’t consider so much of a non-prospect. Plus speed, plus defense, plus arm. The main concern was his bat and he’s been hitting of late.

the mccoven rated Edwin Quirarte and Jose Castilla above him.

I was pushing for him to get included forever so I feel like he don’t get much respect round these parts.

I consider Quirarte above McBryde because of Quirarte’s stuff. Keith Law also thinks highly of him.

I like McBryde too. I didn’t think much of him as a prospect until recently, actually. To see him skip AA tells me there’s something there.
