San Francisco Giants center fielder Aaron Rowand reaches out to snare an RBI-single by Chase Headley. Not pictured: grit, missed sliders.

Part of me wants to make excuses for Barry Zito. Seriously. He didn't help himself by walking David Eckstein on four pitches or getting behind Brian Giles, but he was the victim of quite a few bloops and dunks.

Still, he was up against a pitcher who was released by the Nationals. That's like a girl who can't get a phone number at Comic-Con. And yet I fully expected that the Padres would win. Sad, that.

Add in the unexpectedly subpar performance from Madison Bumgarner -- who allowed two hits while striking out less than a batter per inning -- and this wasn't a good night for the Giants' organization.

Also of note: Scott Hairston is a bad person who laughed a lot during Schindler's List.

I missed the first inning

but during the rest of the thought game I thought Zito looked much better than the last two season. His curve had a steeper dive, his fastball had some hop. His command was really pretty good (for Zito) the umpire was calling a tight zone to everyone. His change up looked different … it looked more like a slider to me. I’d say it’s reasonable to hope that Zito puts up an ERA between 4.25 and 4.5 over the season, which I’d consider a very happy development.

Now I know thats not how baseball works, but if you squint hard enough, and look at the fact that his fastball was hitting 88, and his changeup was below 75… with location he could do ok.

Madison Bumgarner

Disappointing outing for “MadBum”? Are you kidding me! 6 shut out innings, 62 pitches, 48 strikes, 2 hits, no walks and 5 strike outs. Fast Ball from 92 to 97 mph and the change at 83. You try to hit it. I do agree that he needs to not rely so much on his fastball; but when you can locate it like he does…well he is 19! Zito’s problem is he is looking over his shoulder at the train on the tracks and see’s himself ending his career with someone like ……. San Jose!

He certainly pitched well

But it came to turn water in to wine, he failed miserably……

is it time to start worrying about Pablito?

He’s striking out a lot.

Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.

by oldjacket on Apr 11, 2009 6:56 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Define worry

I think he’s probably our 3rd baseman of the future .. but it seems clear that he was rushed to the bigs. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a position player with a less effective approach at the plate. Now that major league pitchers have figured out how to pitch him (eye level fastballs and low and away changeups) he is going to have to change to keep up.

by Change Up on Apr 11, 2009 10:56 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

no

4ks through 4 games is nothing to worry about. If it’s 50ks through 50 games, then it might be time to start worrying.

you know

Adam Dunn hits 40 home runs like every year, and strikes out like 350 times.

Dunn is a weenie bit more selective than Pablo.

Question???

Why is it that we Zito has a bad start and we want his head, and Timmy has a worse start and we just look away. Trust me, Im no Big Zito follower but it is only 1 game and there is time for improvement. Remember Zito started 0-8 to begin the year.

I think that last sentence answers your question.

It’s true that if I put Zito’s name in there, I would get a lot more agreement.

track record vs potential. We know what Zito is, we don’t know what Merkin is yet.

You're kidding, right?

Did barry zito win the cy young and lead the majors in Ks last year? When he does that, then he’ll earn himself some leeway. With Tim, that performance was an aberration. With Zitlol, that’s what he does pretty much every time he pitches.

Two things...

Is it me or if Harriston played the Giants every game he’d be in the Hall of Fame? Why not just go out and get the guy so he doesn’t KILL us anymore.

Second, how can you go two for two, 4 games into the season and only raise your batting average to .167, how sad is that?

I was at work and I didn’t get to see the game.

Don’t get hung up on BA – if he has a .375 OPB at the end of the year, I’ll be quite happy.

he rose his batting average 167 points in one game, that’s pretty impressive.

Lame joke for today

Our guys may have been pummeled last nite, but at least they weren’t “pummeloed”. The latter happens when we lose and irate fans hurl pummelo fruit. This would more likely occur at AT&T Park anyway.

Can’t stop laughing.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.
