Which player will opposing fans hate?
What does it take to become a hated by opposing fans? Well, I'd say combination of at least two of the following
a)good performance
b)criminal history
c)signed huge contract
d)perceived as a showboater
e)suspected to be a PED user
f)history of being rude to fans
g)history of being hated by teammates
If I left any out, please pick up my slack.
Last season, we didn't have Bonds, who had more than filled our "hated player quota" for over a decade. The team was also generally lousy, and our only really stellar players were impossible to hate (Lincecum and Winn).
This year, though, the team seems like it could actually be competitive, at least within the confines of the NL West. Competition can lead to...chafing.
Will the Giants have a player that starts to annoy opposing fans this year? If so, who will it be, and why?

Some fans might not like Timmy. Mets fans probably would say he only got Cy Young because he pitched in the NL west.

Or they’d say, “Da Mets’ bullpen blew so many games for Santana, that’s why he lost! The Giants bullpen was lights out last year because they got to face the crappy NL West, that’s why Lincecum had it so easy! At least I’m pretty sure, I’m always asleep before Giants games hit the fourth inning…”

If Rowand has a good year, I could see other fans not really liking him very much.

He’ll definitely be unpopular with someone then.

If the Giants have a player which only hits or pitches well against that team, they will be hated in the city. Kind of like how Scott Hairston before last season only seem to hit the Giants. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of anyone on the Giants that is a Scott Hairston.
Randy Winn destroys the Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Still in despair.

He’s also pretty money against the bums, but their fanbase isn’t aware enough to hate.
Randy Winn is going to catch that. And he'll do it real classy-like too.
I think Randy Johnson is a pretty obvious choice. I know I hated him before he came here. He also has a very surly reputation although when he’s on your team he doesn’t seem that bad. Another one would probably be Brian Wilson. I could see him getting on fans of other team’s nerves, with the tattoos, the weird hair, and that little celebration he has after a successful save.
Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!
I never hated RJ..
I don’t know why, but I even rooted for him when he played for AZ (unless he was pitching against the Giants). I can agree with Wilson though.

Mrs. nvsfg said on Tuesday " I hope he pitches well, but I never really liked him. He just acts like a dick most of the time".

Brian Wilson
Opposing fans are going to jump all over that quasi-mullet/mohawk and his cross gesture after picking up the save. Oh, and the whole Zito bunk mate thing may be ripe for some disdain.
Any type of mongering is A-OK in my book.

The casual fan would probably hate criminal history and PED user. Die hards would be more likely hate good performance if a guy kills their team.

WE NEED TO BE HATED
Dbacks fans really hate Randy Winn. At least, the ones on AZ Snakepit do.

I’d hate Alex Hinshaw’s stupid flat-brim hat if he wasn’t pitching for the Giants.
My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.
I hate it anyway. I like him, though.

I’m pretty sure Buster Posey will be widely hated if he’s succesful. He’s so babfaced and his name is so easy to mock.

What about Barry Zito?
Sure, his production is down, but he’s a Tweeting, TMZ-style celeb who’s making an incredibly ridiculous salary during a recession.
Behind Zeets, there’s Brian Wilson (hair and X-gesture), Randy Johnson (“Don’t get in my face”), Timmy (Cy Young, emo-hair and wears his emotions on his sleeve) and Fred Lewis (plays Bonds’ position).
Great topic for a post, by the way. The Giants’ emphasis on pitching in recent years shows in how difficult it will be for opposing fans to rag our position players with any real vitriol.

I’m not hip to the current trends, but I don’t think Lincecum’s hair is emo.
Judgment Day is coming
comics | art | Nattowear
Maybe not technically, but I’m talking about an opposing fan’s point of view. Off the field Tim’s shaggy hair along with the ever-present beanie and baby-face could lead Dodger fans or others to come to an emo-conclusion.
Dumb/ignorant fans have made bigger reaches before, like the amazing amount of Raider fans who’ve told me the 49ers are all gay because they play in San Francisco.
I’d never call Lincecum or his hair emo in any way (he doesn’t exactly look like Pete Wentz or some dude in My Chemical Romance), but maybe I should have clarified that.
by Bay Area Sports Guy on Apr 10, 2009 12:48 PM PDT up reply actions
I’d classify Tim’s couture as half emo, half Tenderloin transient. With the everpresent flip flops thrown in.

That’s where the emo comes in. Jeans so narrow I can’t even think of fitting into them.

When I met Lincecum at the MLB 2K9 event in Novato he was wearing jeans like what you’re talking about with Adidas Sambas, although I’ve heard he usually sports the flip-flops.
