Manny Says

“He’s nasty,” K’d on three pitches, which now puts Mad-Bum in the same class as Billy Sadler. Except Sadler did in the regular season and had the honor of being relieved by Tyler Walker.

Former Nats GM Jim Bowden is on LA radio talking with John Ireland of ESPN radio. Bowden says Nats already have made decision to draft Stephen Strasburg and believes they will be able to sign him for around $15MM at the midnite deadline. Bowden expects Strasburg to pitch in DC by September.

Martin Luther King once called Chicago the most segregated city in America.

When I was in grad school at the University of Illinois, Chicago, I had a (white) student from the Chicago suburbs tell me she would never go to California because it was so racist, and she knew that ’cause she Crash and A Day Without Mexicans. I laughed and laughed about that. Dumb people are dumb.

It’s easy to forget now exciting Estes once was. He was a great prospect, and the Giants had so little starting pitching, and such a mediocre minor league system. Then Estes was traded for Salomon Torres, then still the #1 goat in the organization. Estes came over and DOMINATED in the minors – moving from high-A to AA to AAA in one year and pitching great at each level. In 1996, he got a cup of coffee and looked great, and in 1997, he had a fantastic, All-Star season. And then he became a head case and was just never the same again. But back when he was fresh and new, it was so exciting to see Estes after spending so much time watching Mark Leiter, Staff Ace, and regular starts by the likes of Sergio Valdez and Mark Portugal.

Darvish to the Marlins!?!

Patrick at NPBTracker.com notes:

Surprising news out of Japan today – apparently the Marlins are close to a deal that would land them Yu Darvish.

The Marlins’ management team has found a way to work around the posting system – offering Darvish’s current team, the Nippon Ham Fighters, an ownership stake in the team.

Nippon Ham has granted the Marlins an exclusive negotiating window with Darvish and if they can agree to terms, the Nippon Ham will release him and take over their reportedly significant share of the Marlins franchise.

A person familiar with the negotiations was quoted as saying, “it’s the beginning of April and the Marlins almost fooled themselves that they were ready to compete with the Phillies and Mets with the roster they have. Getting Darvish should push them over the top.”

It’s kind of weird to think the Marlins were once a big-budget, free agent-fueled team.

Juan Pierre

And yet they’re still probably better than the Giants.

Opening Day info

From the Giants website:

On Tuesday, April 7, the Giants will officially embark on their 51st season in San Francisco, 126th campaign in Major League Baseball and 10th season at AT&T Park, when they face the Milwaukee Brewers at 1:05 p.m. In a game known for its on field heroes and their ability to provide fans with magical moments and memories, the Giants will pay tribute to a national hero whose instincts and talents resulted in the saving of 155 lives and countless more when he miraculously landed Flight 1549 in New York’s Hudson River earlier this year. Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III, a resident of Danville, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch, and American Idol winner Taylor Hicks will perform the National Anthem.
