Fight the Pessimism

I'm not the most optimistic guy in the world, and when it comes to the Giants, I habitually see the worst.  But after yesterday's collective freak out of epic proportions regarding the 25 man roster, I was genuinely surprised at the general attitude.

Star-divide

Compared to where we were at the end of spring training last year, we have improved tremendously.  Our players have played well and seemingly every player important to the future of the Giants has improved and given us nothing but hope for the future.  Consider:

- We have a real Cy-young award winner and 3 of the top-10 K% starting pitchers anchoring our rotation all of whom are 25 or younger;

- Pablo Sandoval decided to impersonate Vlad Guererro at the plate and looks like he can be a passable defender at both catcher and 3B;

- Fred Lewis looks like a good regular in LF;

- The corpse of Travis Ishikawa was raised from the dead and remembered how to hit;

- Burris is looking more and more like an adequate ML second baseman;

- Schierholtz is finally on the big league team;

- Brian Wilson emerged as an All-Star closer and now Merkin Valdez seems to be completely healthy and throwing like his old self;

- We have one fewer year left on Zito's contract;

In the minors, over the past year:

- We've added the second best catching prospect in all of baseball who has indicated nothing other than that he'll be a stud in his limited play so far, as well as several other interesting prospects through the draft and international free agency;

- Madison Bumgarner became a top-10 prospect, showed that he can be absolutely dominant and Tim Alderson also showed that he can be really, really good;  In fact, multiple prospects from the 2007 draft has done very well and taken major steps forward;

- Both Sosa and Juaquin seem to be putting it together (at least this spring) after injuries;

- We actually added a viable bullpen arm through the Rule-5 draft;

- Hector Sanchez had ANOTHER great year in the Dominican, showing power and patience while switch hitting as a teenaged catcher, demonstrating that he has no business in the kiddie league YET AGAIN and should have been brought to this country where he could be reunited with his adoptive father, who's proud and biased, but come on - he should be PROMOTED PEOPLE!

Also, our GM, whom pretty much everyone irrationally hates with vitriol and passion (note: I do too), has consistently done the following:

- Made the most of our draft picks, using them to add serious talent to the system and not shying away from high price tags;

- Made a premium acquisition on the international free agent market;

- Signed several minor league free agents that will provide actual depth for the big league team while playing in Fresno (Medders, Miller, Guzman, Phelps...)

In short, he's added a lot of talent to the organization in just the ways we have always wanted him to - draft, international free agency, Rule-5, and milb free agents.

There are still pleanty of problems (Rowand, Zito, Sabean, Boulder Head, etc.) but there are, for the first time in years, a TON of reasons to be happy.

So, please, be happy.  Thank you and have a nice day.

the following are quotes on cynicism

Idealism is what precedes experience, cynicism is what follows.

The cynics are right nine times out of ten.

Cynicism is an unpleasant way of saying the truth.

and my personal favorite…

"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven’t got it." George Bernard Shaw

i defend my right to rant and whine and otherwise emote all over the rest of the mccoven. if i am right about the crappy roster decisions, then i get to feel glib and pompous. if i am wrong, then the giants are successful and that trumps being right. so there, nyah!

i neglected to comment on how i thought we should be characterized as cynics and not pessimists, because the root of our angst it buried in the distrust of the powers that be, not in some gestaltist view that all things are going to Hades

Be as cynical or pessimic as you want

I just wanted to remind people that (if they want) they can be happy and optimistic when looking at our club. :)

Yeah but

everybody tries to corner the market on being right by reverting to wanton cynicism. Valid cynicism becomes difficult to distinguish from chicken little nonsense and then second-guessing rears its ugly head.

What of self-fulfilling prophecies? The Cub’s experience with that Bartman guy is a perfect example: the epic cynicism of Cubs fans became its own cause. When that guy nabbed the ball from Alou- and I was watching- you could feel the air let out of the team because everyone had been expecting something like that to happen. That’s the inspiration for my sig.

So while I dig the difference between cynicism and pessimism, but its a fine line that is easily crossed (esp. late at night while blogging). I watch baseball to root for my team, not to say I told you so when they blow it.

Please Jesus, don't let us be like the Cubs.

Thank you for this post

I agree with most of what you said.
Just remember that we all love this organization, and therefore do not want poor, short-sided moves to ruin the progress that has taken place over the past year. I think that is where the pessimism came from.
I also agree with Headhunter, above, who pleads to not lose his right to cynicism. I am an optimist for this team, and for this organization, but I know bad moves when I see them.
I will take my shot of optimism, followed by a healthy chaser of cynicism. I want this organization to do well, I just don’t think I trust the powers in charge.

Other positives

Our rotation collectively could conceivably have an RA under 4.00, now that Johnson is in the rotation and Sanchez hopefully is ready to go a full season, stamina-wise. With an RA under 4.00 last year, the team would have been 81-81 or thereabouts. With a greatly improved offense this year (about 5-10% more runs), we could actually be competing for the division title if things roll our way in terms of what our young players do.

The bullpen now have 3 pitchers who are capable of closing in Wilson, Affeldt, and Howry, instead of one for most of last year.

Romo, if he can return to last year’s form would make it 4.

Valdez, if he can return to last year’s performance and stay healthy all season (big if) would make it 5.

Renteria is a huge improvement offensively at SS, even if he was as bad as he was overall in 2008; but he should do even better than last year and be a good hitter in the #2 spot.

The team with Sandoval, Ishikawa, and Lewis adding, as well as Renteria, should have at least 30 more HR in 2009 than they did in 2008 (though Burriss will hurt that now). They should also hit a lot better (except for Lewis) overall.

We have Schierholtz as 4th OF, if there is another injury like Rowand’s last year, the Giants can sit his butt on the DL until he is healed then minors until he’s ready, knowing that Schierholtz should be a starter right now anyhow, based on what he’s done in the minors and AAA the past two seasons.

We have Uribe and Aurilia as very capable backups at 1B and 3B, in case anything happens to Sandoval and Ishikawa, like the need for platoon or lack of production. And Frandsen is lurking if Burriss falters for any reason.

I would also add that his adding of talent in the draft is not coincidental with the recent streak of losing, the only way to add talent reliably through the draft is to lose and lose big (like the Rays and Brewers have done over past decade). It is extremely hard (odds are around finding one good player every 5-10 years) to find talent via the draft while winning, it can take years of drafting while winning before you can hope to find 1-2 good player, whereas 2-3 really bad years of losing would do the same.

That’s how the Braves rebuilt, 6 gut-wretching horrible years, but it finally paid off near the end of that when they drafted Chipper Jones with the 5th year’s earned draft pick. If they had stopped trying to lose (when you end up with one of the worse records in baseball consistently and there’s no change in management, you are trying to lose), their long stretch of success would never have happened without Chipper. I think our Chipper will be Posey. Or maybe our 6th pick this year. Our Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz look to be Lincecum, Bumgarner, and Cain, Villalona hopefully will be our Andruw Jones.

just a minor comment, but I think to say that Howry could close is a stretch. It should probably left as the Giants have 3-5 good to above average bullpen arms on the big club, and that is a significant upgrade over last season

Based on Howry's performance prior to 2008

Those are certainly closer numbers and he has closed on occassion.

My main point is that his performances in the past are closer quality and we would be getting that in the setup position, which we didn’t get in 2008.

Martin, I think your logic on that Braves metaphor might have a few flaws. For one, as none of Maddux, Smoltz, or Andruw Jones were acquired thru the draft (or thru other players acquired in the draft), I don’t see how the Braves winning or losing had much to do with their acquisitions. I suppose you could say that they were able ot trade Doyle Alexander for a highly prized John Smoltz because they were a losing team in 1987, but still it’s entirely to their credit that they turned a relatively low cost FA signing into one of the great pitchers of the last generation.

More important, it’s really over stating the fact to say that the Braves rebuilt thanks to 6 gut-wrenching horrible years. Yes, they drafted Chipper with the #1-1 pick in 1990. They also got Steve Avery with the #3 overall pick in ‘88 and Kent Merker with #5 in1986. But that’s the extent ot the advantage they got from those high high picks. They took Mike Kelly and Tyler Houston with #2 overall picks, and Derek Lilliquest with a #6 overall.

In fact, if you look at their early 1991 pennant winning team (the end result of their rebuilding period in your scenario), it’s noticeable how little advantage their years of losing gave them. They were mostly built through FA, and predominantly in just the prior two years. Starters Greg Olson, Sid Bream, Terry Pendleton, Lonnie Smith were all signed as major league FA. Raphael Belliard was signed as a minor league FA. Jeff Treadway was purchased outright from Cincinnati. Otis Nixon was a FA. Charlie Leibrandt and Juan Berenguer had been signed as FA that winter (along with Bream, Pendleton and Belliard — quite a winter’s spending spree!).

What’s more a lot of the players who were homegrown had been drafted not during their horrible losing years of 1985-1990, but in the relatively good Joe Torre years that had preceeded them from 82-84 (90 wins, 88 wins, and an 80-82 2nd place finish). Ron Gant (4th round 1983), Jeff Blauser (1st round, 1984), Tom Glavine (2nd round 1984), and Dave Justice (4th round 1985) were all the products of this relatively successful era.

So really it’s a lot more complicated than, stink for a few years = successful rebuild!

Sorry for mixing two different points in one paragraph

I started on rebuild, then jumped to how the Braves had a long stretch of winning. So good point on that, but that’s not what I meant. The talk at the end was more about the construct of how the Giants might duplicate the Braves long stretch of success, I was not literally saying the Giants did it the exact same way the Braves did it.

I agree that it’s more complicated than stinking resulting a successful rebuild, anyone can see that with the Pirates and Royals. My main point is that I think it was crucial to their rebuild that they got Chipper Jones, and the only way they got him was losing for a long time, and badly. Without him, they never have that long run of success.

The draft is a matter of doing it long enough to get the key pieces you need, not to literally rebuild the whole team. In fact, and I know you know this, every rebuild is part-draft, part free agent, part-international free agents, part trades. Everyone does it a little bit different.

But everyone needs to get crucial pieces, the star players, through the draft. Sure, they got pieces from when they were relatively better (though at .500, they still got better draft picks than if they were actually winning divisions). Again, nobody rebuilds just during their losing period. The key thing is that the elite players, the ones who can lead you to have a long stretch of success, are easiest to find when you have a pick among the first five picks overall. That entails a lot of losing.

And the draft, again as you all know, is not a smooth normal curve, it is lumpy and uneven, and sometimes you end up with some poor picks. That’s been the point of my draft study, that even if you select with a top pick overall, it is not like catching fish in a barrel, there is still a significant amount of risk you are taking on, even with the first pick overall.

So, if you want to rebuild easier, on a relative scale with all the other alternatives, you need to start losing a lot of games, enough to get you into the Top 5 picks overall, and keeping on losing and picking until you find the right player who can lead you forward. Because there is no other higher probability way of doing it.

Free agency is mostly catch as catch can, if you are lucky there is a Bonds on the market who you can sign long-term, but mostly they are Casey Blakes and Orlando Cabreras. Good luck trying to find someone like that in Latin America, seems like you have to get close to every parent with a teenage son just to find one to sign, there has not been any consistency as to how to find and sign a star player. And Japan (and the rest of Asia) is even worse for finding a star player. And you cannot always steal a Smoltz, or Kent, or Schmidt in trade. The problem with all these methods is scarcity, there is not always a good player obtainable in these ways each year, so these are not reliable ways to execute a rebulid.

The draft is the only area where a team can reliably find the good players they need to complete their rebuild. And the best pickings are if you select within the Top 5, and ideally the first pick. But as you noted with Atlanta’s picks (and if you check out other teams, other drafts), that is pretty poor results.

That has been my exact point with my draft study: there are very poor results in terms of finding good players in the draft, even if you are drafting with a Top 5 pick, under a coin flip.

However, it’s the only game in town and still the best way of locating the good players you will need if you expect to become a winner again, and particularly if you hope to build a long winning dynasty. The odds are much better with a top 5 pick (around 45% odds based on my study) than a pick you would have if you were winning (around 10-11%), or four times better.

So you basically need to lose, and ideally lose badly, for a long time, to get multiple lottery tickets, which these players basically are, and hope that you pick a good one who you are rebuild around.

Thus, your point on the Braves rebuilding without getting any production from draft picks while losing is an apt one, showing that a rebuild can happen without a top draft pick contribution, my main point is that their long run of success probably wouldn’t have happened without Chipper, and that’s what I’m really more concerned about.

Most teams worry too much over being competitive for that year once the glory days are over. We all saw that with the Giants the past 4 seasons. Teams built upon older players have creaky foundations that won’t last long. They have short shelf-lives as a winning team.

Most of that Braves team that they had their first success with were basically at their peak or starting to go past, they were mostly around 30 years old, with some older, and some younger. So that success did start without the high draft help from the losing, yes, but it was Chipper who sustained that long run. And, actually, you were off slightly, Avery was a big contributor to that first winning team, as well as Kent Mercker, so they did get production from prospects drafted from their losing years, they contributed to their rebuild. The fruit from those early losing years were starting to pay off that season, and they added veterans around them to fill what they needed.

So, yes, rebuilding is more than simply losing for a number of years. I think anyone here can see that. My point is that if you want to rebuild and have it last, you need to stink for a while until you get enough pieces to build around by supplementing with free agents, international free agents, and trades. Because few teams, if ever, rebuild without obtaining good players via the draft, and the fastest way of doing that is to lose and lose badly, getting higher probability draft picks.

Being mediocre brings you mediocre draft picks. The Giants of the 70’s and 80’s showed that to be a poor method of rebuilding. It was only when they really lost a lot of games, leading to the drafts of Will Clark and Matt Williams, that rebuilt the Giants and put us to the path to today. If that continued into the 90’s we might have become the Tampa Bay Giants back then, who knows if there would have been enough support without the Will Clark era energizing the team again.

great post – but here’s what I’m trying to say:

A lot of us have been feeling very optimistic about the team because of all the stuff you said above – and we’ve started to gain a little more faith in Sabes once again. So then, after a promising spring, to see such strange roster moves, it makes it that much worse, you know?

They just did things that made it seem like they weren’t thinking or planning ahead in any way. If you’re going to make Pablito the backup C, why play him exclusively at 3B until the last week of the spring? That’s the one that really bugs me the most. So even though it appears that the team has gotten smarter at getting the right players in, it wont do any good unless they put the right players on the roster.

cynicism and the walk

Unless our offense is able to take a few more BB’s than last year, and
our pitchers are willing to give-up a few less, I will reamin cynical about
our beloved giants. When your OPS differential with your opponents is
about 50 OPS points, and your long ball total is toward or at the bottom,
you just are not going to win enough games. Take more walks, and
give out less, and this team will contend with the talent they put on the
field.

Read BP's Between the Numbers, Chapter 9, section 3, Why Billie Beane's Sh*t don't work in playoffs

Offense has virtually no correlation with success in the playoffs. Nothing significant, at least. Scoring runs too. It’s pitching and defense.

Our pitching is capable of around a low 4 RA/G; that and last year’s offense would put the team around .500. Our offense, despite minor tweaks in the minds of people, is actually probably radically changed. We had crap at 1B, 3B, and SS last year. Absolute crap. Ishikawa, Sandoval, and Renteria should be able to easily beat what those did last season, collectively, look at the split stats on BB-Ref.

That’s why it don’t matter what our OPS differential is, because our pitching differential is that much or even better.

And walks don’t get you wins if you don’t have anyone to drive in those runners. Bocock had a hell of a lot of walks early on, but hit for crap; would you really rather see that?

The giants of the last two years would be in that situation. Game tied at 3-3 bases loaded and two outs. Up steps (Durham, or Rowand, for example) The count is full and a ball come way inside and either hits the batter or just misses him, for either ball 4 or a HBP, but the batter swings and misses, the catcher recovers, and the out is made. Instead of a walk off win via the HBP or the BB, the game now goes into extra’s where as a cynic the giants find a way to lose. We just can’t have that this year its not the “giants way” by the way the orioles are doing the same chit, this year they are doing things the “orioles way”. I think maybe all the owners got together and decided to come up with a new theme! Cynical? You betcha!

counter point on " Team X's Way" slogan ...

Have the O’s bought a sizable share of one their farm clubs this winter? Our ownership has. To me that’s them putting their money were there mouth is. Otherwise please carry on.

R. Ortiz is not the Run Dingerz.exe we are looking for.

The Orioles don't even have close to the rotation we got

So there’s no way we are like the Orioles.

OK

Well, there’s always that, plus they gave us the three best months of Sidney Pontoon’s career for three pitchers who didn’t amount to anything afterward.

However, I’m still mad at them for taking Matt Weiters away from us, sure, I like Buster Posey fine and Madison Bumgarner even finer, but I was hoping in that draft that Weiters would fall to us, and some mock drafts had him falling to us.

So the reality is we have Bumgarner and then Posey, but if that scenario had happened, we could have had Weiters and then could have still selected Posey and put him at another position, like SS or 2B, where his bat could play, or even CF, where we have no good candidate in the system currently, other than maybe Wendell Fairley. Or could have selected Smoak maybe, or even Gordon Beckham, he looks like he’ll be a good SS.

No pessimism allowed until the games start

You can criticize your team all you want but spring time is the time for hope and optimism. Before the games begin you can hope for career years from everyone and imagine the glory to be had when some previously unknown player has an all-star type year.

Pessimism is for when you lose the first game of the season!
