Believe Velez can develop into a solid CF. Give him an opportunity. And like Baggs writes if it doesn’t work out then Andres Torres is available.

he has gotten some fairly extended looks in the OF in his mior league career
he played 44 games in CF and 19 in RF for Connecticut in 2007, and 25 in LF in Fresno last year. If I remember right, the reports were not good at all.

then get rid of the guy because he cannot play the infield either.

What problem?
EIther he can or Burriss and/or Torres can fill the roster spot
by wilriv21 on Mar 9, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
no, the 25th roster spot can be filled. I meant the problem that stands in the way of Velez ever becoming a useful player.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Mar 9, 2009 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’d rather have Velez sit on the bench than a young player who might possibly have a shred of a future.

agreed
I think Velez is a perfect 25th man, he can at least fake it in the IF and the OF, he can pinch run, and he doesn’t have any upside to go to waste in a limited role. I was just reacting to the comment that could become a “solid CF.”

Matt Downs
Projected to be a utility guy – at best. What if he was to replace the irreplaceable Velez?
by wilriv21 on Mar 9, 2009 10:17 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Downs has played 22 games above A ball, and those (though in a small sample size) not very well. He’s not exactly young for where he’s been, but that would really be setting us up to completely waste a roster spot.

Torres is 31.
I don’t think we have to worry about it.

Torres could make a very good 5th OF. Slick fielding CF, speedy, switch-hitter with some pop and OBP skills.

if this is an accurate scouting report...
sign me up. i still bet velez earns a role as a backup utility infielder, though. He can’t really play any position well, but Bochy be damned if he can play about 4 positions poorly!!!

I think everyone is looking at ‘07/’08 as if that is the ‘real’ Velez, as if the guy can’t improve. It seems to me, from what I am reading from Az, that he is much better (not, not Omar, just better than vintage Velez). ie, his D is approaching acceptable. If he hits and avoids pickoffs, he would be a fantastic utility player – able to play 2b, 3b, and all OF positions – sort of a two for one utility guy, with a bat and some speed.

Rajai Davis would have been good right about now. He had a fairly solid season with the A’s last year. A good back up center fielder is crucial. Why Winn is not automatically considered the backup in center is confusing. Are they going to deal him to give Nate a shot in right? I’m OK with that. So I guess the Giant would need someone to fill in in center.
On a somewhat related note – for all the talk of Burrell not being able to field his position in left or first being the overriding factor in not signing him, the Giant seem to be putting a lot of trust in two guys at crucial positions – Sandoval and Velez.
by Dedalus on Mar 9, 2009 8:26 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Rajai Davis hit .260/.288/.372 with the A’s last year. That is fairly not solid.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Mar 9, 2009 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
For a starter – no. For a back-up with a tremendous glove and great speed it is. As a late inning replacement for Rowand and spot starter it would work out fine, let’s just say better than Velez or Torres. But that point is moot – the larger question is in regards the personnel decisions the Giants have made, and how they continue to make these mistakes – I think the consensus here is the putting Velez out in center for any significant time is a mistake in a continuing pattern of mistakes.
by Dedalus on Mar 9, 2009 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
for all the personnel mistakes the Giants have made, letting Rajai Davis go is not one of them.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Mar 9, 2009 9:22 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
As opposed to keeping Roberts over him it was. Yet just a small stitch and larger pattern of mistakes.
by Dedalus on Mar 9, 2009 9:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
have to disagree...
at the time, Roberts was only a year removed from being relatively productive. given the money the team had sunk into him, it only made sense to keep him for another year and see if they could get some return on that investment, rather than hang onto a non-prospect 5th outfielder.

Why not Schierholtz?
With Winn covering center, obviously. Winn’s probably our best CF anyway, and I don’t think I’m alone in considering Schieholtz to be a far better prospect than Velez.
The idea that they’re not trying to maximize Nate’s ABs seem pretty insane to me. Velez has an opportunity to seize at bats in the infield (whether he can do it or not, who knows), but Nate needs as much playing time as possible to evaluate him before Winn’s departure. He isn’t likely to get it anywhere but the outfield. For the time being, any Rowand off-day that doesn’t result in Schierholtz playing is a wasted opportunity.

Agreed.
Playing Winn in CF and Nate in Right when Rowand has the day off also makes sense because if we fall out of contention or just feel like trading Winn because Nate proves he can play everyday, he’ll have more of a market as a CF. Winn could practice his new position but more importantly we wouldn’t be pulling it out of our asses when we tell teams he can handle center.

what the hell, why not?
It’s worth a shot. Its a low risk, high reward move. If Velez can manage to find some sort of defensive competency, he could be a very useful player. Not many players with his speed, have the power he does. Not that he’s a masher, but his power numbers point to something being there, and from watching, he is clearly more than a slap hitter. He has a great arm, too. It is a long spring, and they can get a good long look at him in the OF, and if he’s a abysmal they can just scrap the idea.
I do have to say that a lot of people here are giving up on him far too early. Speedy McFuckup has made egregious mistakes, and the frustration induced by those mistakes is probably clouding the judgment of some here. If Velez figures it out, even halfway, he’s going to be very useful.
Of course, none of this is to say he is going to figure things out. But he might, and that contingency is valuable enough, considering the risk.

Do you think Velez is a better hitter than Winn and Schierholtz? Playing Velez in CF is taking ABs away from them.

No. But Winn isn’t likely to be a giant beyond this year, and I’m not sure Schierholtz has the speed to play center.

Who are the back-up SS and CF?
Uribe may get a roster spot because he can play SS. Hopefully Velez could become a solid back-up CF however if not then Sabean needs to do some rosterbation. Lewis and Schierholtz should not play CF because they are not good defensive CF. Winn could fill in however would prefer a sold defensive 5th OF option.

Is this the coda for Velez?
Kind of like the Joe Castle needs looks at second base talk we heard mid July last year. I have to wonder if the Giants are circling the A’s and Rangers just waiting to see which outfielders end up without a spot when spring training ends.
And really if thinking Velez should be trained at the MLB level for 1 of 2 positions that have the most defensive leverage a bit like expecting Sandoval to lead the league in walks this season. If the front office wants that then AAA or a 90+loss team are the places to try those kind of experiments.
