Pedro Martinez looked good. Maybe Felipe can bring him back to San Francisco with him. Then again, the Netherlands aren’t actually the 1927 Yankees.

Great Game

I’m really enjoying this one. If the Netherlands pulls off the upset, it’ll be a huge boost for the whole tournament.

I missed the DR/Nederland game. Go Oranje! I’m rooting for them because A) honkbal is awesome, 2) I’ve always wanted to learn Dutch, and 3) they’re orange. Orange is awesome. Queen Beatrix is the head of the House of Orange-Nassau.

I’m basically rooting for everyone because I love these international tournaments but for me it’s Mexico number one, USA second, Japan three, and Nederland four. I’m supporting South Africa as well because my new family has ties to the nation. The mom was born in RSA.

The country legalized same-sex marriage in 2001. Abortion is legal on demand after a five day waiting period. Prostitution is legal, as is euthanasia. I’m not going around picking up hookers or seeking to end my own life, but I like that the general attitude over there just lets people be. It’s like the government actually trusts that its citizens can make good choices on their own. zomg!

You’re right, obviously a country’s politics can’t be defined just by its current government, and it’s definitely still a liberal country . But I do think that the country is becoming more right-wing/conservative, as is most of western Europe. Again, SFGA, correct me if I’m wrong.

France and Germany (Sweden too) have pro leagues but they’re probably not very strong leagues. Italy’s pro league Serie A1 is comparable to class A ball for example. UK fielded a team in the Olympic baseball qualifying tournament for 2008.

So you have really lackluster baseball to hang your hat on.

He was tragic as a third baseman. In one season in left, he was a bit below average. It’s only one season though, so things could go a lot of ways. He could get better with more practice, he might just have been lucky as hell, or who knows what else? I’d personally put him at below average with the potential to get better, but there are arguments for a wide range of beliefs on his skills.

Overheard on the replay - as best as I can remember

“Don’t you think Bay’s experience in the postseason with Boston is helping him now?”

“Absolutely, and he crushed the ball in the postseason with them.”

Soooooo, what? In his FIRST postseason, he crushed the ball, so I guess experience wasn’t important. But now that he’s in the more important WBC, experience is important?

Jason Bay, in his first postseason experience – .341/.471/.634

Experience doesn’t mean shit. Playoff experience doesn’t mean shit. Experience in the postseason has no affect on success in the postseason. Veterans aren’t more reliable than rookies, it’s a myth.
