Revised Depth Chart for the Giants
Two changes to the big roster picture:
- Dave Roberts is gone
- During yesterday's game, Sabean hinted to Jon Miller that an 11-man pitching staff is a possibility.
There should probably be a 2a: Josh Phelps has had a whopping eight at-bats so far, so he's probably not being looked at as a serious contender for a roster spot. Here's a revised guess at the Opening Day roster:
Certain:
Molina
Ishikawa
Renteria
Sandoval
Winn
Rowand
Lewis
Schierholtz
Probable:
Aurilia
Velez
Uribe
Holm
Frandsen
Maybe:
Burriss
Andres "2nd-most-spring-at-bats-on-the-team" Torres
Bowker
Jesus Guzman
Probably not, even if he makes all kinds of sense for this team:
Josh Phelps
Brian Bocock
Brian Bocock
Is this about right, or am I missing something? Are Uribe and Aurilia fighing with each other for one spot? If Sabean was serious about the 11-man staff, who do you pluck from the "maybe" category? The only one who doesn't need more seasoning in the minors is Torres, and even though he had a pretty good season for a speedy CF in AAA, he's an unknown quantity. I hate those. They make it hard to make snap judgments.

I’d go with Bowker. I’d like Burriss and Jesus to go to AAA.
You probably know it as MYANMAR, but it will always be BURMA to me!

I don’t think there’s much of a need for Torres since Velez will most likely be on the team as a speedy OF. If I had to choose between Burriss and Guzman, I would probably choose Guzman. Burriss can definitely use some seasoning at SS for Fresno. Guzman can also run Dingerz.exe, whereas Burriss has yet to purchase that program from the software store.

Burris’ hardware is not compatable with that software application.

I don’t think that Aurillia is fighting with Uribe… It seems from what I’ve seen only Uribe is fighting Uribe

I agree on the Richie v. Uribe part
to me it seems that Uribe is fighting for a spot as the backup 3b/ss/sometimes 2b whereas Aurilia is fighting for a spot as the backup 1b/3b. In my mind, Richie would get a lot more at bats platooning with Ishikawa than he would with Pablo.

I think Torres is making this team. So what position is Raptor Jesus going to play in Fresno?

Torres is interesting, a journeyman former top prospect for Detroit is now age 30. Was impressive in the games I saw in Arizona. Spraying line drives, blazing on the basepaths and covering centerfield gap to gap. He’s excited to get all this playing time, and he is the best defensive center fielder in camp. He’s got speed similar to Velez, but seems to have a good head and knows how to steal a base. I did see him airmail one while trying to gun a runner at third, but at this point in spring throwing errors are all over the place.
Don’t know if he makes it, but I could see him as a late inning defensive replacement/ Rowand’s off day backup……

11 man pitching staff
Sounds great, however, you will be asking your starters to begin pitching into the 7th innings of games right out the gate. With Wilson, Affeldt and Howry as three of the six relievers who are the other three relievers between Medders, Miller, Perdomo, Tashcner, Hinshaw, Romo, Valdez, Matos etc?
by wilriv21 on Mar 6, 2009 2:50 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I wish they’d go with an 11-man staff.
Ideally they could AAA shuttle the last spot or two to a few different guys, like they did for parts of last year.
But of course, players have feelings, and aren’t stat producing machines.

oh yeah, the starters…
How deep do you think Unit/Zito/Sanchez are going to go on a regular basis? It could be like a return to the Alou-era bullpen rubber arms (without all those extra beer breaks during games).

agreed
Not just the starters but no day off after Coors field. I think this is the kind of team that can go stretches with 10-11 arms but directly out of the gate? That seems like a not so bright idea.

Three relievers after Wilson, Affeldt and Howry...
At this point, I’d definitely like to see Medders and Perdomo. Then probably Hinshaw—maybe Matos or Miller.
Just, please…. not Taschner.

I bet they ultimately wind up going with a 12 man pitching staff
Sabean just mentioned the 11 man thing as an idea, I think the final roster will have 12. I would hate to see Bowker, Burriss, or Guzman wasted as a 25th man on the MLB roster, I want to see all those guys play everday in AAA.

I could see the team carrying only 11 pitchers at some point during the season, but not for an extended period. early in the season, though, it seems imperative that the starters not be pushed to go 7+ innings.

Holm
I’d put Holm in the certain category. i just don’t see them going into the season with Pablo as the starting 3b/backup catcher. They need to run for Molina far too often to do that and I’d prefer Sandoval to stick at 3b as much as possible.

With the Giants cutting Roberts, I’d say Richie is going to have to earn his spot on the roster. If Phelps or Uribe outplays him this spring, Richie might not have a job.

There are a lot of guys I would like to see stick (Bowker, Jesus), but you have to cover all the positions with backups. So: (previously posted on El Lefty Childraising)
For the 5 extra position players, Holm is a given, as are Velez, who can be both IF and OF, and Schierholtz, if healthy. With those 3, you have covered C, 2b, OF. To cover 1b, 3b and SS you need Aurilia and Uribe. The only really awful choice seems to be Uribe, but I’m not sure they have a choice; they need someone to play a few innings/games at SS.
I think, if Perdomo continues to impress, they go with 12 pitchers, with a pen of: Wilson, Howry, Affeldt, Merkin (if healthy), Taschner, Miller/Medders, Perdomo
by allfrank on Mar 6, 2009 6:12 PM PST reply actions 0 recs

Will the 14th position player get enough playing time to make an appreciable impact? Will that impact be positive or negative in contrast to the theoretical contribution of the 12th pitcher who doesn’t break camp? In these terms… I don’t think it’s going to result in very much one way or the other.
But what it might do is give the club a few weeks to see if one end-of-the-bench guy can establish himself, plus give the last man in the bullpen (once they call up the 12th pitcher as the schedule settles down) a chance to establish himself at Fresno.
Unfortunately, the 14th hitter to be sent down — the one who fails to get off to a good start — will most likely be the one with the fewest options left. That’s just Giants luck.
Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.
