Wow.
I’m guessing they let him go this early so he can find a role on another team. Why drag it out & leave the guy hanging.
Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

cynical dissonance?
Wait, is this worse than keeping Dave Roberts, i.e. throwing good playing time after bad signings? At least as a pinch runner Velez is a base stealing ma sheen. Besides I though we are about playing young potential over veteran grit, so this is better of two unpalatable choices. Velez has raw talent that can’t be taught, and maybe just maybe-can-learn his way out of his shortcomings (r-orz/plate discipline). And maybe he’s just too damn dumb. Much more fun to watch though, if you can handle the pain!
Please Jesus, don't let us be like the Cubs.

Still, getting rid of Roberts is a good thing.

There must a new aditive with surpriseing side effects in my coffee.
Best of Luck to Mr. Roberts.
I am amazing glad the front office didn’t keep him around leaving him in situation where the fans get angrier and angrier as Rock Head played him more and more trying to audition him another team. $6M isn’t complete chump change and it probably required swallowing a big chunk of ego at the same time. Good job Sabean. I continue to applaud our new Alien Over Lord.

the team can either (a) pay X million dollars and have a roster spot occupied by a brokedown savvy veteran, or (b) pay X million dollars and liberate someone (Bowker, Ish, whoever’s oldest) from Fresno to see what they can do. I’ve not understood the difficulty of that analysis with the kinds of guys (Edgardo, Durham, etc.) that they’ve had to decide about the last few years.

This might be wishful thinking on my part, but if the Giants are now willing to eat the last $6.5 million on Dave Roberts’ contract, might they be willing to eat the last [enter number betwen zero and $101.5 million] of Barry Zito’s contract?

Uhhh, No.
Zito is still useful in his role. I was very much against the signing, but I think his role this season as a No.4 will help him this year to have a bounce back season. While it definitely wont be worth the money we are paying him, he can still be worth 10-14 wins a season and eat 7 innings in a game.
Roberts was just not doing anything remotely worthy of a contract. DFA’ing him was worth it.
if we DFA Zito, we would be on the hook for an enormous contract and then go have to pay someone to replace him to do basically what he would have done.

I don’t know what makes you think Zito can eat 7 innings a game. He’s pitched 7+ innings 18 times in the last two seasons over 55 starts. Only 7 times in 2008. So sure, one out of every three times he’ll eat 7 innings based on the last two years. Given his continual decline, we might be looking at a handful of 7 inning starts this year.

by Giant Fan in Singapore on Mar 5, 2009 12:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Hey look over there!

I believe when Zito was winning games more often (you know, his first 3 years with the A’s) he was an innings gobbler. Of course, no stats on hand to back that up, that was just my perception of him.
by scout6 on Mar 5, 2009 2:55 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well sure, but he was also a pretty good pitcher back then. Also, while in Oakland, he had the benefit of some great defenses, a great home park, and some good luck. Sadly, he’s basically been in decline, peripherals wise, since his 2nd season in the bigs. I just don’t see any reason why that would suddenly change. If it does, I’ll be ecstatic, but you’re basically betting on 00.

There are plenty of reasons why a lot of people couldn’t be an average MLB catcher, it’s really not an easy thing to do. Baseball America wrote a very good piece exploring the idea and made the point that he would be the heaviest regular catcher in MLB history.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Mar 6, 2009 2:48 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but all the reasons he might not be able to (basically his size and mobility) haven’t affected his actual ability to do it. At some point people need to just accept that not everyone is going to fit the generic mold. Everything I read in that article seems to support the fact that he can catch, until it’s proven that he can’t.
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve seen that Sandoval has ranked as one of the game’s best at erasing base stealers the last two seasons and only committed nine passed balls per 120 games in 2008.
Before 6-foot-4 Cal Ripken Jr., there were only a handful of shortstops in baseball history who were at least 6-foot-3. Since then, Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Troy Tulowitzki and Hanley Ramirez have come along.
Scouts say Sandoval has trouble physically crouching down low enough to get into proper catching position, and his size limits his agility. Yet so far he seems to have been able keep the ball in front of him. Was it the pitching staff in high Class A San Jose making him look good? Sandoval and Jackson Williams each caught around 50 games for San Jose, yet Williams committed 11 passed balls compared to Sandoval’s four. That’s not a very good way to isolate the effect of the pitching staff, but it’s something.

Body Bias!
I would love to see him get a shot at catching, I don’t think he could do it (just like I don’t think he could play 3B) but he might as well get a shot at every position before he ultimately becomes a 1B.

Body Bias! x2
He’s too short for 1B!
But seriously, I just want him to prove that he can’t play catcher before it’s written off because the positional adjustment from catcher to wherever else he ends up is worth anywhere from 1-3 wins a year. Even a subpar defensive catcher is better than an average 1B.

I actually think there is a decent chance of Molina being traded around the deadline. There are so many contending teams that might wind up in desperate need of a Catcher (Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, etc.) that I think Molina could wind up having a lot of value.

I don't see what is so great about this
The money is a sunk cost so that shouldn’t have been a consideration, but I never feared that Roberts would take playing time from Lewis and Schierholtz (I know that puts me in the minority amongst all the “Bochy loves vets” hysteria around here). I would rather have Roberts be the 5th OF and have Velez and Bowker playing every day in AAA (although I don’t care as much about Velez because I think he has very little upside). If they did this as a favor to Roberts because it was obvious that he had no role with this team, then I am ok with that, but I don’t see a huge upside for the current roster.
I am a lot happier about this part of the article:
Regarding Yabu, Sabean sad he would look to trade the 40-year-old long man.
"Again, in his case, age is a factor," said Sabean, who wants to give an honest shot to Rule 5 draftee Luis Perdomo.

And Fred Lewis was a living, breathing question mark, barely clinging to prospect status. Your point?
It’s not like Roberts became the starter again after he came back from injury.
by Viliphied on Mar 6, 2009 12:08 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
And Roberts was a living breathing exclamation point at the end of the sentence “Dave Roberts is a nice guy but not an everyday MLB left fielder!” My point is that “Bochy loves vets” is not just “hysteria”.
Oh, and then there’s this:
Bochy was enraged during a trip to Washington, just before the MLB All-Star break, when asked by a front-office official why he was continuing to play Castilla. Bochy relayed that Castilla was his best option and he would continue to play him. If they didn’t like it, Bochy said, “Get rid of me or get rid of Vinny. Your choice.”

yeah, you’re right, how could he play Vinny Castilla when he had such great and promising young players on the bench? Anybody who refuses to play the likes of Geoff Blum, Mark Bellhorn, Todd Walker, Russel Branyan, and Justin Leone in favor of Vinny Castilla clearly has a raging hard on to play vets.

Again I would like to point out the shift in policy here that it took to do this move. I can’t think of a single solitary position player veteran that Sabean has released before June in his final contract year. Not a one. This is exactly the type of move a rebuilding front office needs to be able and willing to do. Tell now we have had not any evidence that they could or would do it. Now we do.

Pass that kool aid this way!
Zito in ’09 is way over stating it. But say it is 2011 and somehow all the big young arms in "A’ ball last year make it to the MLB level then we are getting in the neighborhood. What this does show is the front office believes you can have sunk costs with more then 3-4 months left on a contract. And the eating part of a contract (about 1/3rd in this case) not just theoretical.

That’s kind of a low standard for a “shift in policy,” isn’t it? How many position players in all of baseball ever get released a full year before their contract is up?
It’s good that he’s not waiting till midseason to embrace the inevitable, I guess, but it’s also a sign of how the contracts he’s doled out have gotten progressively worse.
by Evan on Mar 5, 2009 9:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not about how many position players in all of baseball.
It would be how many teams with several consecutive sub 500 years would wait this long? It is also is about do we really think it’s been almost 15 years since there has been a non veteran position player that was either past his pull date or just fit teams needs so poorly that front office didn’t try and made lemonade from a moldy lemons with him?
On the last question look how long Sweeny was held onto just a couple seasons ago. Lewis comes up rips the cover off the ball (granted it was vs the Rockies) and he didn’t start again for how long as the "show cased" Sweeny.
As for your point on contracts this move this bold print and underlines the shift even more. A part of the Roberts signing in the first place was the Giants’ had a banged up Bonds, Winn and Linden for near MLB O.F. talent. So the front office went for the security of a known quantity ( for the moment leave aside they ended up asking him to do things he hadn’t done well all career). Now the Giants have Lewis, a banged up CF, Winn (who should be gone next year) and a question mark in JuggerNate. This time however the front office opted not only to avoid the security of a known quantity they active moved away from it.

Still, addition by subtraction on the field. This should now ensure that Aurilia is a mortal lock for the team. I’d like to see Phelps get a shot off the bench, though I understand he isn’t helping himself much lately at the plate.

Nah, I don’t hate him for the deal he signed — anyone would have done the same. He did get a little bitchy last season when he was relegated to a bench job after Lewis’ breakout. That’s what get me about PROS like him and Matt Morris. Preach their clubhouse intangibles all you want, but the minute they start to struggle or lose their spot, they act like everyone else.

I am inferring that in my book it’s cool to wear ex players stuff to the yard if they were not jerks. To me Roberts was not a Jerk. With is struggles here there were plenty of chances for him to say and do stuff that would have made great newspaper print. To my knowledge only once did he say anything remotely uncool (Xanthan mentioned it above). I don’t consider that one time a big offense.

They had him playing in Left a couple days ago and I know he has played alot of third and second, but what do you guys think of him making the team as an OF.
They are talking about having Nate, Velez and possibly Bowker as back up. I dont really see how bowker fits with Nate and Ishi both being lefties, so what about a righty power bat like guzman. Because unless Ishi just falls on his face I dont feel great with a good young power hitter sitting in AAA.

With one year still left on his contract, veteran outfielder Dave Roberts was released Thursday by the Giants.
Roberts, 36, is perhaps best known for “the steal” that helped launch the Boston Red Sox from a 0-3 deficit to eventual World Champions in 2004.

Why we did that?
Yes, his salary was a sunk cost. But was he really blocking anybody? No. Is it just so we can have Frandsen and Burriss and Velez on the roster? Or Bowker? Or was it just to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for… somebody? Torres?
Roberts is one of those guys that’s great to have on your ballclub until you actually have to use him. Not too sorry to see him go. But just dumping him without having a bigger plan in mind makes no sense.

An open 40 man spot on a rebuilding team (defining "rebuilding team as a team without the talent level to have a Pythagorean win total of 88 or more games) is not worthless and especially not this time of year and for the next month or so. For example if that spot was open last week taking a flier on Marte (if the front office was so inclined) would be a pretty easy thing to do. If another team exposes a promising infielder (of even OF) from here on it would also be apply.

The hope, of course, would be that we were actually signing a F/A outfielder and needed a roster spot for him. Maybe a deal got done and they’re sitting on it for a day or so for whatever reason… nah.

We do need extra spots on the 40 man roster so that’s surely a consideration. Aurilia & Uribe are both likely to make the team & so they’ll need a couple of spots for them (and certainly at least one) There’s also the possibility of a reliever (Medders, Miller, etc) making the squad who’s not on the 40 man roster
