Zito v. Kershaw. Pfft. The dink the Dodgers are throwing out there doesn't even have a Cy Young. Mismatch!

It's on MLB.com's Gameday Audio. The best link I can give you for now is the one for Gameday.

from BA John Manuel chat

Vince: Omaha, NE [via mobile]: I think the addition of Manny puts the Dodgers as front runners for the NL crown…does any other team in the NL west pose a threat?

SportsNation John Manuel: (2:41 PM ET ) For whatever reason I think the Giants will be a factor; actually, I know the reasons, Lincecum, Cain and the rest of the pitching staff. Obviously the Renteria signing was brutal; I guess I think Pablo Sandoval will be that good. Arizona seems like the other most legitimate contender thanks to Haren & Webb (well, Webb, then Haren, then the rest).

Random Manny story

The year I lived in Western Massachusetts, I never made it to a game at Fenway, but I did take a ballpark tour one day, and the guy leading the tour told a Manny story.

The year Manny had signed his huge contract, the team was going on a roadtrip, and Manny asked a ballpark employee if he could take his truck to a carwash before they got back to Boston. The guy said sure, can you just give me some cash to pay for it. Manny shrugged, said he had left some in the glove compartment, and the guy could keep whatever was left over for his troubles.

When he guy took the truck in and checked the glove compartment, there was about $5,000 in cash.

RANDOM ASIAN CUISINE STORY

My wife and I had our honeymoon in the San Juan Islands in Washington. In the main town. Friday Harbor, there’s an amazing Thai restaurant. Just great. We at there twice. The second time, there was a couple in their 30s, plus the mother of one of them. The whole time we were there, the mother went on and on about how she didn’t like Thai food. “It’s just so mushy!” she kept saying. “I don’t even like Chinese or Korean food. It’s all just so mushy and terrible!”

I think she got fried rice or something. Meanwhile we feasted on our amazing calamari and local curry mussels and rolled our eyes.

Yum. That stuff sounds so good.

There’s a really excellent Thai place in Concord that makes amazing food. They serve the pineapple curry in a hollowed out half of a pineapple even. I love the presentation, even as I cannot stand pineapple. I had the garlic prawns and green beans with red peppers and my friend had the pineapple thing. They give you a huge pot of jasmine rice with your meal too; it feeds like four people alone.

It was indeed really good.

On the other hand, the Mexican restaurant in Friday Harbor sucks. I got a chili relleno, and it didn’t even have a real poblano or other pepper. It was, like, a mass of goo with bits of canned mild green peppers strewn throughout. Ugh.

Barf. Oh man I should post in my LJ about the massive supermercado fail on Monday. I made chicken mole for my new family and I thought I would find all the stuff I needed for the sauce at the damn Mexican market. They had mole in the jar. But no chocolate, no ancho or mulato peppers dried or fresh, no peanuts. I had to make do with pasilla peppers I got there. I got peanuts and the chocolate at Walgreen’s. Actually the chocolate worked well because it was the Lindt dark stuff with the chili pepper flavoring.

Still, on what planet is it acceptable for the supermercado to not have the necessary ingredients for mole? Mole is practically a national dish.

I’m always baffled at baseball announcers who don’t bother to learn to pronounce the names of, y’know, baseball players.

I remember once watching a Mets broadcast where they were playing the Rockies, and neither guy could say Vinny Castilla’s name. One called him Castillo, the other pronounced it “Cast-ill-ee-uh.” He’d been in the NL for years and years at this point, mind you.

Yeah, but Estes had a great season with the Giants, and he never got paid $2.4 million per pitch. And acquiring him (with Wilson Delgado for Salomon Torres) was actually a SMART move.

Ever get the impression that the Giants’ broadcast evaluation bar is set a little on the low side when Zito pitches? Doug Greenwald’s sidekick, Rocky Bizwack (sp?) commented that Zito “threw well and looked pretty good out there today”. I’m thinking if Lincecum—heck, Sanchez, Cain, Johnson or Kevin Correia—threw like Zito did today and had the results he had, no one in the wrap is going to be saying something like that.

That being said… I thought Zito looked pretty good out there today. He threw pretty well. Only 4 hits and a HR in 2.2 IP. And two shiny strikeouts!! He’s BACK!!

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??
