Uribe Closing in on Roster Spot
Per SFGate: "After Juan Uribe homered twice in a 7-5, 10-inning loss to Texas on Monday, manager Bruce Bochy came awfully close to saying the 30-year-old would make the team."

I honestly don’t hate Uribe and I like him on the team depending on how 2B sorts itself out.
My thinking is this:
Frandsen wins 2B → Uribe makes the team
Burriss wins 2B → Uribe doesn’t make the team

I’d really prefer this didn’t happen

I’m OK with this, I suppose, if his defense is good. He’s a pretty rotten hitter, though.

Wow read it more as...
manager Bruce Bochy came awfully close to saying the 30-year-old woman makes the team.

At this point we can’t believe Bochy can we? Frandsen, Burriss, Uribe, Velez and Aurilia are all making the team plus Holm, Schierholtz and Torres? I guess the Giants are going with a 5 man bullpen.

I don’t recall him saying Torres or Velez would make the team, but maybe I missed it.

on Torres it’s mostly been Bagg’s interpretation of Bochy’s words:
His .511 on-base percentage is the best in the desert. And there’s little doubt he would be one of Bruce Bochy’s 25 men if the manager had to draft his Opening Day roster now.
“I can’t say enough about how well this kid’s played,” Bochy said. “He makes things happen. In that first inning, he’s down two strikes and gets a walk. He’s a good defender, a good runner. This kid’s doing all he can to make this club, believe me.”
Or maybe there is just one spot for the two of them:
Giants manager Bruce Bochy didn’t directly state that Torres and Velez are competing for the same reserve outfielder’s job, but his remarks implied that they are.
“We’ll look at their overall game and see what fits best for the club,” Bochy said Friday after Torres and Velez excelled in the Giants’ 10-3 exhibition victory over the Cleveland Indians. “That won’t be an easy decision if it does come down to one of them.”

I didn’t even bother looking at his stats before now, because I somehow blindly just assumed he wouldn’t make the team. But wow. a .295 career OBP? And he hasn’t cracked .300 since 2005? That’s really, really awful. If his defense was Vizquellian, I don’t think I’d like him making the team. If his power was Bondsian, I don’t think I would like it. As it stands, I think .I’m going to really, really hate it. In fact, if he gets many AB, I think you can firmly count me into the anti-Bochy camp. I’ve kind of reserved judgment on that, but yeah, this would push me over the edge. And it doesn’t do Sabean any favors either.

Using THT GPA, Uribe had one of .221 last season (220 in 07 and 222 in 08), while Castillo’s was .224 with the Giants (220 with Houston). They are probably undervaluing GiDP, but then I think maybe up to half of Castillo’s DP were just rotten luck.

Not surprising
I always pretty much assumed he was going to make the roster but i really don’t understand why there’s any need. What does he bring that we don’t already have in the other players on the roster (Aurilia/Frandsen/Velez)
He’s basically a worthless player who can play a badly at a few positions that we already have cover for so i really don’t see what the point in carrying him is, especially when they’re sacrificing other positions (backup catcher / 12th pitcher) to make room for him!

I’m surprised. I thought “(Aurilia/Frandsen/Velez)” had pushed Uribe out of the picture.
I still say let him play in AAA. He’ll hit 20 homeruns in a month in Fresno, and then maybe the Giants can trade him. The same can’t be said of Frandsen or Aurilia even though they might bring more to the team. (and Velez should be in AAA learning how to bunt and not get picked off 1st base.)

I’m not as he seems to be the reason to the uncertainty with regards to the numbers on the roster. If he wasn’t going to make the team then there wouldn’t need to be an issue with the backup catcher or 12th pitcher. Placing him in Fresno makes more sense as i just don’t how he adds anything to the roster!

Racists!!!!!
I’ve sensed a lot of anti-Uribe sentiment from the blogosphere and Giants fans in general, and frankly, some of it makes me a little queasy. The .295 career on-base percentage is not wonderful, no. But I hope people aren’t casting aspersions on Uribe because two other Latino infielders, Jose Castillo or Pedro Feliz, have aggravated fans in past seasons. From time to time, I do sense an undercurrent there.
Someone must’ve said something about being brain-dead and hacking at slop to get Andy’s panties in a wad.

I think people cast aspersions on Uribe because he’s a pretty terrible player rather than any undercurrent. I’m sure any other replacement level players with no upside will get the criticisms. Castillo aggrivating fans probably doesn’t help people’s perception of Uribe in so much as they’re very similar players. they’re play the same multiple positions and are both of similar quality (replacement level and lower)
Feliz is a different kettle of fish in that annoying though he was, he at least had some ability, but i’m sure if we’d signed Crede he’d get the same aspersions cast at him, so i’m not sure it’s simply a Latino thing.

There have been a lot of much-maligned Latin infielders for the Giants in recent years – also Jose Vizcaino and Neifi Perez – but that’s probably mostly because there have been a lot of really bad Latin infielders for the Giants in recent years. We’ve also been happy to hate on Bocock and Cody Ransom, for example.

.295 OBP is more than just “not wonderful”. It is abysmal.

Yeah, I think trying to dig for racist sentiment here is more than a stretch.
Uribe just isn’t good, and Frandsen/Burriss is probably better. Certainly more upside.

the only correlation is that over the last 3 seasons, the giants first had a latino 3B who didn’t hit well and then picked up two more on the cheap who hit worse. If castillo’s name was Joe Castle, we still would have hated him just as much.

Feliz != Castillo
Feliz was a homegrown Giant that lots of us were rooting for and hoping he would fulfill his potential, until we finally realized he already had.
Castillo was a washed up mediocrity who couldn’t even keep a starting job in the Pirates lineup. His signing represented a massive failure of any kind of contingency planning on the part of the Giants management, and Castillo took some of the flak from that.
Anyway, my point is that
