Ranger Fans in San Francisco...
Alright boys,
My girlfriend and I are making our way to San Francisco this summer for the Rangers/Giants series (June 19-21). I am planning on going to at least 2 games, but do not know a lot about the Ballpark or the city of San Fran. What are some things that I need to see while I'm there and what are some things I should skip? Is there tailgating before Giants games? Is the Arcade a good place to sit? If not where should we sit? Restaurants to go to?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. My sincerest apologies for a waste of a FanPost.

- There are a good number of tailgaters, but the parking lot isn’t all that close to the park.
- The Arcade is nice but expensive. Probably not worth your coin. Pretty much any seat in the park is good, but it depends on your personal viewing preferences.
- Are you looking for restaurants around the park or just restaurants in general?
Restaurants...
Both near the stadium (maybe for sunday brunch or something, we are planning on going to the Friday Night and Sunday afternoon games) and in town. We aren’t sure what we are going to do Saturday night, maybe stay in Napa. And I’m 25 and she is 22, so if you have age appropriate activities at night or during the day that would be awesome.

How long are you here? If you’ve got 2-3 days free, I’ll always tell someone to go to Yosemite. It’s something you have to see.

I think we are going to fly in on Friday around noon, leave Monday morning. So we have a few days to kill.

Not enough time for Yosemite, then. But you do have enough time to talk Rangers talk with McCovey Chronicles regular biff pocoroba as he drinks you under the table.

Beer, huh? You know, that idea isn't half bad...
I hadn’t even realized that the Rangers were scheduled to play in SF this year. Cool beans. Now I won’t have to trek over to Oakland to watch the manchild Chris Davis and his run at fifty bombs this year.
I’d second the recommendation of Kitspool below and head to 21st Amendment (if you like brewpubs) for a before-game destination. And on your day off, head to Muir Woods in lieu of Yosemite, especially if you’re going to spend any time in Napa

I was going to say the same thing: If you can’t get to Yosemite, at least get to Muir Woods – but go EARLY in the morning, before the tour buses arrive and deposit hordes of sightseers!
Or, honestly, just hike Mt. Tam from one of the trails down Cascade or Blithedale.
You may have to deal with sort of grotesquely healthy rich people, but they’re still fewer than the tourists around Stinson, and I think there’s an OTC repellent spray available now.

21st Amendment on 2nd St. (two or three blocks from the ballpark) has good food and drink. As does Primo Patio on Townsend and 3rd (great jerk chicken!).
My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.
+1

I haven’t been to a lot of restaurants around the ballpark. There’s a Thai place I like called Manora’s at the corner of 12th & Folsom, but that’s about a mile or so away.
The food inside the ballpark is great, though. Must-haves include garlic fries and Cha Cha Bowls from Orlando’s Caribbean Barbecue (behind the center field bleachers, although there’s also one in the upper deck).
Also, be sure to do a complete circuit of the ballpark at some point. It really is a nice walk.

I'd suggest eating in the park
I don’t know a lot about restaurants around the area, but you’ll find a huge variety of food in the ballpark, and it’s very, very good. Like jcb said, the garlic fries are a must, and I tend to gravitate towards the pub-type food between the 3B line and home plate (don’t know the name of the place, but they have a killer sausage link).
As far as where to sit, Field Club is the best seats I’ve tried, in section 113. Section 123 was a good view other than not being able to see home runs until they fell into the seats…the rest of the lower box has pretty good seats too, at least for what you spend.
You’re going to love it. It’s the best park in all of baseball.

oh and...
Come early for parking. It’s a bitch and you’ll pay a lot for it. Consider parking near the Embarcadero and walk?
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
Or
If you’re anywhere near a BART station, go that route. You’ll pay less round trip, and you won’t have to drive in shitty SF traffic. There’s two stations that are about 20 or so minutes from the park by foot.
Note: SF traffic is actually pretty manageable. That doesn’t mean you have to like it, though.
Otherwise, you really can find a lot of cheap parking lots on 2nd and 3rd street if you don’t mind a 10/15 minute walk. It’s really not bad at all.

Alcatraz, totally worth it...
Fisherman’s Wharf, meanwhile, kinda not. Lots of cool outdoorsy stuff to see in Golden Gate Park as well, and, of course, walking/seeing the Golden Gate Bridge is a must. If you’re lucky enough to come on a clear day, consider a trip up to Twin Peaks— absolutely spectacular view of the city, etc. Those would be my personal recommendations, but SF’s a pretty great city to just kind of let yourself wander in. By a cheap tourbook, avoid the few less savory areas of the downtown area and just go wherever your feet and public transportation can take you. I say this as a midwestern transplant to the Bay Area, so I’m relatively unbiased— it’s just an absolutely gorgeous place. You really can’t go far wrong.
As for the Ballpark stuff, I really think public transportation is the way to go if you can. Avoid parking if at all possible— it’s really just more of a hassle than its worth. Seating-wise, I like sitting anywhere down the third base line and getting a nice view out to RF and into McCovey Cove/across the Bay, but like many have said, there’s not really a bad seat in the house. Food— the Garlic Fries are great as are the Cha-Cha Bowls at the ballpark.

These are good tips
San Francisco is the greatest walking city I know of. The Twin Peaks view is awesome, but a little effort getitng there. A good subsitiue that’s much easier to get to is Coit Tower.
I’ll add that if you’re staying downtown, the ballpark is withing easy walking distance to dickin’ around with public transportation isn’t necessary.
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
my suggestion
walk through fisherman’s wharf, take the cable car up Hyde St to Union Square (but blindfold your gf if she’s a shopper), walk up to market st, then cab it to golden gate park. There are just way too many things to do in this city, but this should be pretty manageable.
I recently took my east coast friend to SF for a day and she couldn’t stop talking about how much she loved the city.
Wall-E for Best Picture 2008
Ennnnh. There’s enough GOOD touristy stuff to do in The CIty to waste time with Fisherman’s Wharf.
I recommend cable cars, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, Golden Gate Park, Lands End, and taking a ferry around/across the Bay.

Twin Peaks.
Bring sandwiches and wander the Presidio (which scares Bill O’Reilly for some reason).
Unfortunately, I left SF at the age where much of my sightseeing advice would still involve parks where you can drink at night and be able to see the cops coming from a mile away (Alta Plaza for the, err, wino).

walking the Golden Gate Bridge is definitely worth it, and I can’t believe I forgot about Lands End. I still think fisherman’s wharf is a cool area. Pier 39 is really touristy, but the wharf is one of the unique parts of the city

Now that’s a real “California wacko” sort of endeavor.
There is so much to do in SF, you will easily pack your entire trip full of activities.
It is hard to recommend bars/restaurants because there are literally thousands. What kind of food do you like? What kinda budget are you on?
Are you the reserve a table $15 cocktail redwood room type of patron or the $1 pabst mission type?
I personally like avoiding the tourist crap when I go somewhere and trying to enjoy the local scene. As the time comes closer, hit me up and I can recommend all sorts of fun places to go on the relative cheap.
Take a cab to the park, it will be cheaper than parking. And yes to tailgating – and I don’t know what Natto is talking about w/ the lots not being close to the park, they are less than a block away and separated by nothing but a canal.
Many people like to do the Golden Gate Park thing. There’s a TON to do just there alone, and the California Academy of Sciences has re-opened, there’s the Conservatory of Flowers/Botanical Gardens/Japanese Tea Gardens and Haight-Ashbury. Kezar Pub is one of the sports bars in the area.
As far as food goes...
We are fine with just about anything. Alcatraz sounds cool and I’m sure we will do a little bit of the tourist thing, but I’m the same way when I travel, I’d much rather do what the locals do, eat and some hole in the wall places and places you don’t read about in frommers. We are looking forward to the seafood and the weather, and hope to get a day of sailing, a day of wine country, a day of rangers (Sunday) and a day of touristy type stuff in. I appreciate all the help from you guys on this, I’ll gladly buy anyl of you a watermelon wheat (my Texas genes are quietly sobbing at the thought) or a shot of whiskey, whatever fancies your style a little better. Looking forward to this trip as it will be my first time to California. (had a ticket to go to the rose bowl when UT beat USC and passed, still beat up over that one) Thanks again.

You’re probably going to run out of time.
As for the weather, here an important tip: Don’t assume because it’s a summer day in California that it’s short pants, t-shirt and flip-flop weather. SF summer days can be remarkably chilly. (“The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco.”. The best bet is layers (t-shirt-sweatshirt-windbreaker) as you’re likely to experience every combination imaginable of the following:
- cold
- warm
- sunny
- overcast
- precipitation
- wind
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
Do’s: What Kitspool said.
Don’ts: Call it San Fran while you are here.
As stated, anywhere in the park is a great seat. The exception are the seat at the far end of the LF foul line. Definitely eat at the park.
by Lars The Wanderer on Mar 30, 2009 5:12 PM PDT reply actions
Oh thanks, I think that’s where we are sitting opening day. Though actually from the seating chart view it looks like we are sitting ON the left field foul pole.
Being in “enemy territory” maybe Triple A club level would be good for you. That area tends to get a lot of families and so they tend keep the fan jerkitude down to a minimum. (At least in my limited experience.)
I don’t think there will really be a problem being in “enemy territory” at the ballpark unless you’re in the bleachers/arcade. Anywhere else you may get some jeers but it’ll die down when no one else in the section appreciates it. You may have friendly banter the whole game, but that’s it.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:

If it’s sunny (fog at the coast is a summertime phenomenon around here), you might consider going out to Ocean Beach, which is where Golden Gate Park starts its journey to the Haight-Ashbury. It’s not too far from the Presidio and Land’s End…
Come to think of it, wandering around Haight street can be amusing – lots of odd shops and so forth (but go in the daytime and don’t buy any pot from the scruffy looking gentlemen you’ll find there).

Bring warm clothes
San Francisco in June can get really cold so make sure you bring with you a couple of sweatshirts and some jackets just in case. This isn’t Arlington. Weather will hit the mid 50s for the night games and maybe into the 60s for day games.
When the fog rolls in on July evenings with the mist…that’s a summer in San Francisco.

by PacBellBoozer on Mar 31, 2009 5:13 PM PDT up reply actions
The point is people coming to SF may not be aware that it is still colder than expected in the summer.
Arcade is cool, but not for night games ....too cold
3 games, I suggest mixing it up a little
I would do
1 in Field Club near the plate for best view of game
1 in Bleachers in Left Field (Rows 5 and closer) for a taste of the Rowdier Crowd
1 in upper deck near the plate (for the views)
You would get a real taste of the park that way, and don’t stress too hard, the bleachers arent THAT rowdy…
Come early on the day you have Field Club Tickets, these tickets allow you access to all levels (except suites) you can go to the FIeld Club and the “Club Level” 2nd deck. YOu can walk all around the park checking it out from all vantage points. Also The Visiting team warms up last, so if you are in Ranger gear I bet you get some autos.
As far as food goes, Garlic Fries are a must….but dont overdo it…1 is enough for 2 to share without getting overloaded
The Sheyboygan Bratwurst is a winner, as is the Hot Link from Evergood behind the plate
The Clam Chowder in a sourdough breadbowl is good on cold nights
Here are some sausage reviews I did a couple years back, the prices have changed but stil valid
Forget the parking at the ballpark, $30 and horrible
You will pay $30 for parking on Townsend between 2nd and 3rd
which is closer to the park and easier to get out of.
Brannan between 4 th and 5th will run $10-$20 and isnt to far
The freeway near Bryant you can park cheaper and its a good walk
Or park Townsend 7th 8th area for free and walk even further
OR take caltrain from penisula and walk from 1 block away
OR take bart to muni light rail and drop off in front of park
If taking muni get your return ticket BEFORE the game
usually at one of will call windows in the front of the park
Bart and Muni is easy, just follow the people in Giants gear
Hotel? Courtyard by Marriot near the freeway is good for the price and walking distance.
Have a car and need something cheaper, I can recommend some hotels near the airport cheap. I go to 40+ games a year, and get hotels for alot of weekends so I have stayed all over the place….
If you have any questions, i would be happy to help
Tommy Lasorda HATES GIANTSBOARD.COM
oh yeah.... Restaurant
AVOID Acme, in ballpark steak house….too expensive and not worth it
Not THAT far from the park, but you might want to cab or drive
3rd street towards the city, under the freeway and then a couple blocks.
If walking avoid 5th and freeway area, lots of homeless you probably don’t want to deal with

How dare you call yourself a fan?!?
No AAA Club level mention…FAIL. (That’s my preferred level for “cold” weather night games. You can easily slip inside to warm up and the lines for food/booze/potty soooooooo much shorter)
No Cha Cha Bowl mention…DOUBLE FAIL.

Cha Cha = Way overrated in my book
And you can always slip into AAA from Field Club on a cold night
Actually the preferred level for eating pregame as well
But if I’m paying, I would rather get Field Club Tix anyday

As far as seating goes
There really isn’t a bad seat in the park. I like the Arcade; you get a good view of players and a shot at homerun balls. The AAA Club level’s great and has awesome food, but it’s pretty pricey. View reserve gives you a lesser view of the field but you also get a spectacular view of the bay. Field Club gives you the best view of the game. Oh, and the only really crappy thing about the Arcade is that at night games when someone hits a homer, those stoopid foghorn things go off and spray mist everywhere and it’s freezing.
Thankfully
With this squad, that doesn’t happen too often.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
If you’re willing to drop the coin, I highly recommend sitting on the Club Level. By far the absolute best seats in the house. It’s high enough up that you can see all the action clearly, but low enough so as not to feel removed from the game. And foul balls can zing in there pretty fast.
If you want to go all alt-touristy, I recommend Haight and Ashbury. It’s where out of town kids go to pretend they aren’t tourists while shopping at the Gap and Ben and Jerrys. However, there’s some seriously killer grub down thataway. I highly recommend The Citrus Club – a noodle house – and getting the garlic beed and shitaake mushrooms, then top it off with an orange unfiltered sake martini. This might just be the best meal you’ll eat in San Francisco.
It’s also within walking distance of Golden Gate Park.
Around the ballpark, I’d agree with the other commenters about going to 21st Ammendment and Primo Patio Cafe. Both are fantastic. You could also head south of the ballpark a short way to go to Moshi Moshi for some tasty sushi. Or get the Chili Sweet Chicken bowl. If the owner, Mits, is around, he’ll be sure to say hi and give you a big welcome.
And like howtheyscored said, take Muni to the ballpark (look for the N Judah line). Driving is a horrible mistake if you don’t have to do it. In fact, driving in SF is typically a horrible mistake.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Oh, and if you go to Haight-Ashbury, I recommend eating at Cha Cha Cha. Yummy tapas.
Never has a poster been more correct in the history of the internet. Ever! - ResDog on yours truly
If The Citrus Club and Cha Cha Chas were to fight each other for food supremacy, Cha Cha Chas would get a beat down so severe, it would make a funny comparison to something that I’m not quick enough to come up with. Dammit…
Basically, Citrus Club >>>>> Cha Cha Chas. My own humble opinion, to be sure, but definitely my recommendation.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Driving in the city is not that bad

I drive all the time
The key is having enough $ for parking, and be willing to hoof in spots with no parking (haight/ GG Park)
Or you can cab it, which ain’t cheap either
Light rail is cool, but of limited utility
Tommy Lasorda HATES GIANTSBOARD.COM
You’re right, it’s far more often the parking that super annoying. Driving often requires knowing which streets to take because they have timed lights. The parking is crazy-making, though. I hate paying $10 or more to park in a lot, and street parking can be extremely difficult to come by. Often time you really have to park far away in order to get where you’re going. But walking in SF is pretty nice. Just don’t make eye contact with the homeless, or they’ll know you’re from out of the area.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Museums
if you’re into art, I’d suggest a visit to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. It’s collection second only to maybe the MOMA in NYC.
The De Young in Golden Gate Park is also top notch. The view from the tower there in a very underrated spectacular view of the city.
My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman
I also recommend the Cartoon Art Museum. It’s small but has a really nice collection of comic pages/panels, cartoon stills, and other cartoon related paraphernalia.
the musee mechanique is also cool, especially if you like old arcade games.
If you hit that, then you’re right there for the tour of the USS Pampanito, a WWII era submarine. very cool.

yes, on purpose
very rarely do you see two ML teams home in the same market at the same time
maybe 1 or 2 times a year, if that
Tommy Lasorda HATES GIANTSBOARD.COM
You may be able to catch a thursday /friday or sunday/monday type of thing. As someone else said, they’re not often in town on the same days. They used to do a thing where one team would play a day game and the other would play a night game – on the same day, but I remember that being a long time ago.
My one option that i can see
is Giants/A’s in Oakland on a monday, preceded by Giants/Texas on a sunday. Unfortunately, it’s Father’s Day on Sunday and the wife usually wants to spend those with our dads. Damn.
