Show me your moves!
It's about that time that most have had their fantasy drafts and set their rosters, so let's share our teams and scrutinize every choice we've made. Let's roll.
The only reason why I have fancy shmancy images for my rosters is that I'm too lazy to type them all out. Here is my team for the McFantasy League: the Vermicious Knids
I chose Sizemore with my first pick, as I'm a pretty big fan of his (but not as much as Grady's Ladies). I picked up Orlando Hudson without realizing it. I probably should get another OF... I don't really pay attention to Saves, so I didn't focus on any closers. I'm assuming Morrow will be a starter, at least eventually.
My other team for the annual head-to-head league with my friends: Liy Lew Haa
I just noticed that I have Swisher on both teams. Actually, the whole roster looks remarkably similar. Hmm. Strange how that turned out. Otherwise, I'm pretty satisfied with the picks I made, at least the early rounders. I really wanted to pick up Randy Winn, but I already had a lot of OFs. Maybe later.
So... how'd the rest of you fare?

There are some obvious issues – a few injury-prone players, a few positions that could do with an upgrade. And David Price is starting the year in AAA, booooo. But I’m reasonably satisfied, considering it’s a big league.
The two biggest LOL moments, though: I needed a SS, and there weren’t any good options, so I took Edgar Renteria. The next pick was Matt Cain. I hadn’t even looked at pitchers so I didn’t realize he was available. ARGH. Then, I picked Ben Sheets, because I didn’t realize he was out almost the whole year. DOUBLE ARGH.

I wanted Cain, I settled for Sanchez. Much like the Giants, my team will probably not score many runs.

From what I understand, one of the reasons he wants to be in the bullpen is because of his diabetes. If that’s what it is – and not just a fear of failure because transitioning back to SP was hard – then I’m all for the guy taking a shot at becoming a dominant closer. (Though, do feel for the Mariners fans who are going to have to find a sure-to-be-craptastic innings eater to take up his 160-200 innings from here on out.)
by GiantsFanInExile on Mar 30, 2009 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
oh...
it’s totally understandable. I am sympathetic to both his concern for his Diabetes and his durability. That said, the move hurts the team, as detailed at lookoutlanding and ussmariner. Essentially the very best relievers in baseball contribute about 2.7 wins/ season. Last year around 50 starters were more valuable than that.

Definitely don’t have to tell me – I was one of the many who thought Keith Law was batshit crazy for even thinking, much less suggesting, Timmeh needed to move to the pen for the very reason you mentioned. (Think the same re: Joba, etc.) Just saying that if diabetes is making starting difficult for Morrow (and it’s not just him wimping out because pitching from the windup was tougher than he thought this spring training) than I’m all for him making the change. Health over wins, any day.
(Sidenote: I do think the Mariners effed this one up – they should have worked him as a starter through their system if that’s what they needed, not yo-yo’d him between roles. Not sure what the ussmariner guys have to say about that cause haven’t visited in a while, but seems like they didn’t have a plan for Morrow as soon as they called him up.)

I’m pretty happy with my team. I’m hoping Wieters doesn’t spend that much time in AAA before he comes up, and I liked my picks of Atkins, Aviles, and Hunter.
Lincecum went #3 overall. Pablo went 94th, Wilson 124, Cain 134th, Molina 148, Johnson 193, Sanchez 205, Winn 244, Renteria 281, Ishikawa 297.

PROTIP
If you go to draft central, draft results, you can then have an easy to view/copy page of the draft, either by order or by team. Here is mine:
Dysenteria
1. (9) Jimmy Rollins
2. (20) Carlos Beltrán
3. (37) Aramis Ramírez
4. (48) Nick Markakis
5. (65) Adam Dunn
6. (76) James Shields
7. (93) Ryan Ludwick
8. (104) Javier Vázquez
9. (121) Derek Lowe
10. (132) Yovani Gallardo
11. (149) Frank Francisco
12. (160) Brian Wilson
13. (177) Rick Ankiel
14. (188) John Danks
15. (205) Troy Percival
16. (216) Billy Butler
17. (233) Jesús Flores
18. (244) José López
19. (261) Wandy Rodríguez
20. (272) Jeremy Hermida
21. (289) Travis Hafner
22. (300) Willie Harris
My lineup looks like this:
C – Jesus Flores
1B – Adam Dunn
2B – Jose Lopez
3B – Aramis Ramirez
SS – Jimmy Rollins
OF – Carlos Beltran
OF – Nick Markakis
OF – Ryan Ludwick
UTIL – Rick Ankiel
SP – James Shields
SP – Javier Vazquez
SP – Derek Lowe
SP – Yovanni Gallardo
SP – John Danks
SP – Wandy Rodriguez
RP – Frank Francisco
RP – Brian Wilson
RP – Troy Percival
I’m pretty happy with my team. My catcher and 2B might be weak, but I’m pretty optimistic about Flores and Lopez is a bit underrated. I really think Adam Dunn was a steal, since this is an OPS league instead of AVG.

Yahoo League:
C – Geovany Soto (6th round) (HR, Avg, RBI)
1B – Mark Teixeira (2nd round) (HR, Avg, RBI)
2B – Brian Roberts (3rd round) (SB, Avg, Runs)
SS – Yunel Escobar (Avg)
3B – Pablo Sandoval (???)
OF – Josh Hamilton (1st round pick) (HR, Avg, RBI)
OF – Nick Markakis (4th round) (HR, Avg, RBI)
OF – Ryan Ludwick (7th round) (HR? RBI?)
UTIL – Fred Lewis (Avg? SB?)
Bench – Willy Taveras (SB only)
Bench – Ian Stewart
Bench – Edgar Renteria (I’ll probably drop him for the first hot player available)
SP – Dan Haren (5th round)
SP – Matt Cain (9th round)
RP – Joakim Soria (8th round)
RP – Matt Capps
P – Randy Johnson
P – Trevor Hoffman
P – Jonathan Sanchez
P – John Smoltz
P – Jair Jurrjens
Everything I read predicted Lincecum would go in the second round, so I passed him up and took Hamilton (HR, Runs, AVG) in the first round. Then the very first pick of the second round was Timmy! I was bitterly disappointed. I salved my pain with Teixeira, but still…. I was thrilled Haren was still around in the 6th round. I targeted Pablo early as my sleeper 3B, and so didn’t panic when the big names there were taken. Got Sandoval in the 11th round, and Randy Johnson in the 10th.

I think wins are going to be hard to come by and I’m worried I didn’t draft enough power, but think I did okay on average/hits and very well on steals. Went for the tons of potential 20/20 guys over one or two mashers with no wheels, so we’ll see how that strategy plays out. Really need Ludwick to not backslide too much and for Bruce to break out.

On the offensive side it would be nice to have some extra HR; a 3rd legit OF would help. I’m hoping for break outs from Upton, Gordon and Young (long shot of the 3).
In terms of pitching, saves and K’s should be in abundance, I’m hoping for a decent ERA, but might take a ding on WHIP. Gregg goes unless he wins the Cubs closing job from Marmol, probably replace him with an SP to cement more K’s.

I’m always in two fantasy leagues too many, but here’s the one I did with Tim from MLB Trade Rumors and some other bloggers:

I’m pretty sure I’ve got the best starting rotation in that league. Joe Mauer’s mid-draft injury is how I ended up with Aubrey Huff playing third.
I'm spent, just can't rosterbate anymore.

I have one league that I’ve been doing for over a decade — we used to get weekly standings updates in the mail — and we had our draft tonight. NL only, eight teams. I had the fifth pick in the draft, and Hanley, Reyes, Pujols, and Wright were taken. Who do you go with?
