MLB 2K9
I bought it today and I have been playing it for a while. First of all, make sure you download the rosters on Xbox Live of Playstation Online (whatever they call it).
-The ratings for the players are pretty legitimate compared to previous years.
-The game play is much improved.
-The in-game experience is incredible. It's in real-time, although you can speed it up a little. After each inning, it fades to black as if you were watching a broadcast, then fades back into the broadcast as if you were coming from the commercials. They do a great job with batters walking to the plate, going in and out of the box, and taking time between the pitches.
-The in-game commentary is much more in-depth than ever before and they have tailored quite a bit of information to each team.
-Pac Bell looks great, although the Pepsi ads around the park are weird.
I haven't been playing long enough to go into much more detail, although I have 1 problem with the game so far:
When creating a player, you can't customize stances or pitching motions. I created Posey, Anvil, MadBum, and TimA and put them in San Jose.

Every time I did that (since that was how it’s done in last year’s game), the guy would just run to the next base. Once I get the game myself, I’ll probably figure it out.

Was it lagging real bad for you? My first 4 games I tried to play were so laggy that either me or the person I was playing would quit. I finally got to play a whole game and lost 4-0 to someone playing as the rangers, oh ya and Vicente Padilla got 18 strike outs against me granted I was the Giants but still. And all because it was lagging like hell!

It was really smooth for my friend and I. There were a few slight hiccups that contributed to some strikeout’s but overall it was an enjoyable experience. I live in the Bay Area and my friend lives in Arizona, by the way.

I'm not sure we played the same game
Because the copy of MLB 2K9 that I have is a buggy piece of dogshit. Fielding sucks. They turned the hitting and pitching into kiddie versions, and supposedly after the first offseason of franchise mode the CPU teams stop signing FA’s.
I signed Manny to play 1B and then punched myself in the face.

I was pretty pissed when I found out they had to stop making it. I would so love to have a next-gen revival of that series- the 2k football games kicked ea’s ass, and they were only 20 bucks, like sports games should be. You shouldn’t have to pay 60 bucks for roster updates.

I feel like it's harder than in the past
…which is a good thing. You can’t simply throw strikes every time and strike every hitter out if you simply mix up speeds. You have to work outside the zone to set up your pitches and even then, pitching is still much more difficult than in the past. After playing for a while and letting the excitement of the new game wear off, I agree that the fielding sucks, however I think the hitting and pitching are more difficult, which is a good thing. If it’s true that the CPU stops signing FAs after the first offseason, I’m going to be throughly pissed.

Yeah, I made it through one offseason last night and they signed FAs just fine, I’m wondering if people meant after that first offseason. I’ll probably find out tonight after work. A patch is out to fix it, but I can’t connect to Live so I’ll be pretty boned if it’s true. If that happens, I guess I’ll be starting up Star Ocean.
As for the pitching, they made it harder to set batters up (or at least different, in my first game with Timmy I struck out 0, but I struck out 7 in my second game), but they made it so much easier to throw the exact pitch you want exactly where you want it. It just feels like a step back about 5 years.

Four players is really nothing. You can play shooters online that have 32 players a team. Halo is an exceptionally simple shooter that has been done better in every way in other games.

32 Players
Too much chaos for me, too easy to die. I guess it’s debatable that other games have done better in EVERY WAY. As for simple, there’s a wide range of weapons with different abilities that each have their own strategy behind it. I like the 4 players to a TV (or two each on nearby TVs) for the social interaction compared to 32 player epic laggy mayhem. And you can’t forget about those glorious, glorious sticky grenades.

OK True...
but in that case, don’t write it off a simple. With that wide range of weapons, various strategy/planning comes along with it quite opposite from running and gunning Rambo style. If you played the game online a lot you would be able to pickup on these, but since you haven’t, don’t write it off as simple.

This year I’m defaulted to 2K9 because of my lack of a PS3, but last year I was all about The Show.
There was one thing about last year’s The Show that absolutely annoyed the piss out of me. Where no matter what my character did during RTTS, I would never be promoted to the majors. I would rake like no other, meet all of my advancement goals, and yet never get the call.
Sometimes it came down to the point where it was year 2 or 3, and my left fielding character was an absolute beast in AAA. Then I’d look at the Giants depth chart, and they’d have Dave Roberts starting in left even though every single outfielder in the organization had better attributes and stats. It drove me nuts. Absolutely nuts.
Oh, and then it would freeze on me during the loading screen after a 2 dinger game and I’d give up for a few weeks.

Yeah, I found that you won’t get promoted if you are blocked by a player having a good year, or one that has a pretty high overall rating. I was drafted by the Phillies as a first baseman and didn’t expect to get promoted. Which sucks.
Demand a trade! (Wait, that might actually be an option.)

PS2
I’m too cheap to buy a PS3. I’m guessing The Show > 2K9, but:
1) How much does it cost
2) How much better than The Show 08 (w/Ryan Howard) is it?
by gore51 on Mar 4, 2009 3:57 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
It’s about 30 bucks for the PS2 version.
by Natto on Mar 4, 2009 4:03 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
How much better is it?
And is it worth it to upgrade?
by gore51 on Mar 4, 2009 6:04 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t own the game or a PS2, so I couldn’t say for myself.

OK
Thanks Natto, anybody else have any insight?

The show
pretty much the best baseball game I’ve ever ever EVAR played. So yeah, 2k9 is probably not better, but I want next-gen baseball and only have a 360

Some comments
Played the game for a few hours today.
- The graphics for the most part are much better then in previous years IMO. The stadiums and sounds are much better then they have been.
- There are some gameplay improvements (but also major flaws), such as the hitting seems easier to control where you want to hit the ball. In previous versions of this crappy game they claimed you could control where you hit the ball but I never could. This year I seem to be able to control the bat a lot better and the frequency of extra base hits is much higher. Where as in previous years I either struck out, singled or hit a HR. However it still is way too easy to hit HR’s.
- Pitching is a disaster. Aiming the ball isn’t a problem, but getting maximum velocity and being able to strike out CPU batters is ridiculously hard. They make WAY too much contact.
- Fielding sucks. The outfielders in particular slow down on any ball hit that appears they have no chance at catching. And we’re not talking just slowing down, but they get stuck…Another problem I have seen is the slow to respond change of direction ability by the players too.
- CPU and overall AI is much better. The players seem to really follow their scouting reports. For example, Eric Chavez is really susceptible to breaking pitches low and away. I have not yet pitched sliders to Pedro Feliz though, I’d imagine it has the same effect.
- Playing games at the Polo Grounds = Awesome. They have some hilarious old school lookish ads on the outfield walls.
- The lack of ability to change batting stances or pitching styles when creating a player or editing a player is a crock of shit, and hopefully will be included in the next patch.
- Like with any sports game, the statistics accumulated during a simulated season are ridiculous. I created myself, hit over .340 with 33 HR’s and over 120 or 130 RBI, yet I had less then 10 doubles and like 1 triple all year. EVERYTHING was a single or HR even during simulation. Also Albert Pujols struck out like 110 or 130 times. I think not. At least he won MVP though….
- I’ve never liked the 2k series at least since the MLB exclusive licensing they’ve had over the past few years for Xbox, but I still think this year’s game is an improvement over the previous two. If they can fix some of these flaws in the next patch it will be a very fun game. The gameplay is improved despite the pitching and fielding flaws. It does feel like you’re watching the game on TV.
Also, the game has the top “100” prospects with their initials the same. Villalona is in the game on SJ. But oddly enough our top pitchers arent there…dumb I know.

Yeah, I couldn’t believe Bumgarner and Alderson weren’t in the game. Was Posey there? I don’t think I ever checked.

I’m not sure if this is right, but I remember hearing basically what Natto said, that minor leaguers aren’t in the players association so they would need to get rights for each individual player. The poster I’m remembering said that some games (not sure which) basically create the better prospects, but use different names with the same initials, so you may be able to find a version of them in the game, and just edit the name.

Sorry, that’s what I meant. However, there isn’t any MB or TA pitchers in the Giants minors, which seems odd.

Jake Rust?

I’m getting it via gamefly so no string attached for me, anyone up for a league of some sort? If there are enough others who want to play I mite just keep it for a drastically reduced price. Any takers?

I’ve never played a console game that could match up with the old Earl Weaver Baseball that was created for PCs back in 89(?). You could see the pixels and no one had unique stances or pitching deliveries. But the ballpark editor was better than the one in EA’s NCAA game I played on XBox, the flight of fly balls, as affected by wind, was ridiculously good, and the different players’ ratiings all made sense and showed up in the game. I could go on, but I’ll just leave it saying I killed five years of my childhood on that game, easily.

The code-wheel thing sucked, though. If you lost it, you were boned.
by xanthan on Mar 5, 2009 5:49 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I lost the wheel when my family moved houses, but I’d memorized one code: 1234. I believe that it was Sportsman’s Park, so whenever I saw that, I’d put in 1234 and every so often got a full game. Of course, nowadays, someone would just POST A COPY OF THE WHEELS AND THEIR COMBOS PLEASE GOD LET ME PLAY A FULL GAME.

I reviewed MLB 2K9
I think I liked the game a bit more than most people, but that might be due more to how terrible MLB 2K8 looked. I will agree that the pitching mechanism on 2K9 was dumbed down a little too much though, and with the default settings walks are nearly impossible both at the plate and on the mound.
MLB 09: The Show has a lot of great features, but using the face buttons to do every task feels dated. If The Show integrated the right analog stick like MLB 2K9 did (with a few tweaks), you’d have a near-perfect baseball game…Oh well, maybe next year.

I’ve never played a baseball video game before. (Before last November, I hadn’t played any videogame since 1988.) So from your review I gather a newbie like me would not have the “this is too hard forget it” syndrome?
by shanghaijim on Mar 5, 2009 8:31 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Hmm
Idk maybe it’s just me but I’m getting tired of everyone trying to integrate the stick buttons to do EVERYTHING in the game, it’s really annoying. It works great for a game like NHL 09 where you have complete control over the stick with the thumbstick but not as well for something like pitching….Imo.
by Hobbes2d on Mar 6, 2009 12:23 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
THIS
Holy shit that pitching interface in 2k9..wtf??? That is a perfect example of trying to cram too much new stuff onto the stick.
by bondslegend on Mar 6, 2009 10:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I think that’s what 2K is going for. Too many people were complaining after losing their first games on 2K8 24-0 and 21-1.
by Bay Area Sports Guy on Mar 6, 2009 10:19 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Well, I would have preferred getting The Show '09
But, unfortunately, I don’t have a PS3, so I had to get MLB 2K9. I’ve seen lots of bad reviews for it, but so far I don’t think they’re really justified. The graphics are outstanding, and the gameplay is pretty solid. My biggest complaints, by far, are the bugs that keep popping up pretty much every single game – either the first baseman won’t catch an infielder’s throw for some reason, or the outfielder won’t catch a fly ball hit right to him for some reason. These bugs could probably be fixed with a patch, but they really get in the way of realistic gameplay, considering I’ve had a number of big innings result against me because the first baseman didn’t catch a throw or an outfielder didn’t catch a fly ball. Still, I’ve been enjoying the game for the most part. If I were rating it, I’d probably give it a 7.5 or so.

Meh
just got it in the mail today and…it’s kinda boring IMHO. I really can’t stand the analog stick pitching- I had to change that immediately. I actually don’t like the hitting being that way either. I’m an old-schooler when it comes to sports games I guess.
