I have a feeling the Giants are aware of this fact.

Actually This Year It Is April 5th.
April 5, 2009. Official opening of 2009 season. All clubs must reduce their active rosters to 25 players before April 5, 2009.

Who’s running the SFGiants.com site? Because right now they have 28 players on the active roster including Bowker and Matos (Posey’s not there). Does this mean they’re down to 26 already? Who are they forgetting?
My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.

according to Baggs, the roster is at 33 in camp (both Active roster people and NRIs)

the SFGiants.com website doesn’t include NRI. Notice Aurilia nor Uribe are listed.

Well, I was mostly right..
I called Matos and Bowker. I’d thought they would throw another pitcher in there at this point, but I guess not.

No real surprises, except maybe for Matos, who last I heard was having a good spring. I’m sure we’ll see him later this year, though.

yeah, in Sabean’s mind the battle for the bottom-two bullpen spots is never over. Matos, Yabu, Medders/Miller, Hinshaw – we’ll see most of them with the big league team this year. And we can add Martinez, Misch, English, Brian Anderson (is he still playing baseball?) to the mix as long shots and Sept call-ups.

I suspect they’ll go back to a 7-man bullpen once Romo is healthy, too.

Lots of articles up on the Merc, two requiring registration.. Details:
- Winn is the new backup left and center fielder, w/ Nate right field only when he plays, and Lewis the left fielder. Otherwise, he’s the starting right fielder.
- Yabu and Ortiz are back in the running for the long reliever role
- Torres/Velez are fighting for one spot, but Velez has an option so it may allow for Torres to make the opening day staff for he’s defense — it takes away the pressure on Winn.
- Looks like the 2nd base decision was delayed, but with Frandsen playing third today, its a fore-gone conclusion. It also is indicative of Velez’ lack of need at 2nd base.
My personal guess is that Uribe is basically out now w/ Frandsen also playing third, and Aurilia is on the team. Guzman, sadly, likely also doesn’t make it.

Am I the only one who still sighs when I see Aurilia making the team?

I don’t sigh. I scream.

Really GiantsWinIt_35?
I’ll just quote Speedforthewin for my sentiments: “like others, I like Aurilia on the team if he is used properly, I just don’t have any faith that he will be. I’m scared for TI if Aurilia does make it.”

I’m more worried about Ramon Ortiz possibly making the team.

neither will Yabu. They dumped him earlier in spring training and re-signed him when nobody else wanted him. What has he done since that would get him on this team? Get the loss yesterday?

Mixed feelings really. Aurilia making the team makes perfect sense really as we need a backup 1B and 3B who hits RH and isn’t going to waste away on the bench. Also i’d much rather have him on the team as opposed to Uribe (although i’m sure both will make the team) On the other hand there’s the obvious concern with Bochy as manager and we’ll have to hope that Ishikawa doesn’t struggle at any point.

IIf The Flying Squiirrel is the utily player and Uribe is packing ( If your the Yanks does he look better then Cody?) then Richie for at least the first few weeks does not bother me all that much.

I am just doing my bit to meet our confusion quota.
It’s probably lifted from another board/blog/whatever for Frandsen. Like a Squirrel he does not have a lot of power but he hustles everywhere, can be seen all over the field and is rather fun to watch as long as you don’t get too worried about keeping up appearances.

being a gamer got you on the team last year not this year. Aurilia makes the team because he exemplifies the “Giant Way.” Get your meaningless slogans straight!

Aurilia
If like me you want Guzman to play regularly so that he gets good enough defensively to stick when he comes up, you want him to start the year in the minors, and not to sacrifice his development to the desire to have his bat on sporadic occasions. If you visualize a team, as I do, with 2 catchers (Sandoval and Holm), with 5 intielders (Ishi, Burris, Frandsen, Pablo, Renteria), and with 5 outfielders (Rowand, Winn, Schierholtz, Lewis, Torres), and with Velez able to fill in in the middle infield and the outfield, you get 13 position players. If the team starts with 11 pitchers, there is room for Aurilia or Uribe. Do I gather that the consensus is sighing, screaming, or weary sarcasm if it turns out to be Aurilia rather than Uribe? PECOTA is thumbs down on both, but with a VORP of 3.4 for Aurilia and only 1.3 for Uribe. I would regret either’s bumping Torres.
by campanari on Mar 30, 2009 12:30 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Good points. I think its Velez v Torres (OF) and Aurilia v Uribe (IF). I’d pick Torres and Aurilia (LOLZ GINATS r OLD.) And let Velez play every day in AAA (option year available) and let Uribe hit 50 HRs in Fresno and trade him for something once his value is bloated (which won’t happen playing late innings in night games at AT&T in a back-up and pinch hitter role).

IF Aurilia wasn’t making the team, he would be let go by now so he could hook up with another team.

I’m very wary of all this Andres Torres love. How many times do we need to see someone have a great spring and then stink it up when the real season starts before we realize spring training stats get thrown out the window? This guy’s been awful whenever he’s been on a major league roster. All I see when I look at him is another Jason Ellison.

Pretty much but with a better glove and more reliable base running. With a Center Fielder that needs to have rebound year defensively breaking camp with a cheap insurance policy that can pinch run/ double switch late in games is not a bad thing. Now if The Big Head can only use him that way.
