New Adopted Giants FanPost: Organizationalizing
Alright, so I think this is the time to do this. We're still bored with Spring Training, know mostly who is going to make the roster, and have a lot of new players to adopt.
This will be a draft, perhaps over many days, that is going to be organized by comments. I know this may anger some people, but I remember in the last draft we had we had plenty of Giants taken by people who came, left, and hardly came back. This way, we know there is some sort of loyalty of the poster to his son. Who knows how John Bowker would have done with the full support of The Agent of Matt Herges?
If you have any better ideas then please post them in this thread. Otherwise, I'm putting this out as a "I want to adopt a Giant!" FanPost, and posting in this thread saying "I'm in" or "+1ing" someone who says this will get you in the draft. Then I'll get the draft order ready, and either make a fanpost for the draft or contact individual members through e-mail to make their picks.
So after saying that, I'm in.
EDIT: Also, this post will stay open until at least Tuesday next week to ad your name into the draft.
EDIT 2: Qualifications to keep your previous adoptee.
- Active since December 1, 2008.
- More than ~1000 comments. (changed from 2000)
- Some sort of evidence of support for adoptee. (Signature, posts about it, etc.)
Please link to support in your post if it's not in your signature. This is what I've figured out so far, as of 7:15 Saturday night.
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

I’m wondering if there should be some option to retain your old adoptee. It doesn’t really affect me since Hennessey isn’t a Giant anymore but for other posters it’s an idea to throw out there. I like the idea of the draft order going by comments though.

This was bantered about but I’m not sure, maybe some of the people who just lurk and hardly post only post to keep their player and then lurk again. Nothing against lurkers, but this is about protecting your player against criticism as well.

Allowed, but you’re probably going to get a really low draft spot, so start researching your favourite Rookie league player.

Will I even get a chance to adopt? If not can we assign a draft order for new draftees in June(?)?

I've never adopted a Giant before!
So I’m in too, as long as I don’t get stuck with Zito.
And if I make a few thousand “comments” between now and the draft, then I can get someone good, right?
I know this is all silly and fun, but
I’m in, and I’d prefer to just keep Thomas Neal. I believe I’ve more than done a superb job of being a loyal Neal supporter. He shouldn’t be up for grabs, unless I don’t want him anymore. I’m more than willing to forego what I believe would be a pretty good draft position just to keep my guy.
With that said, I think that if current “adopted parents” wish to keep their adoptees, they should stay their preference as I have, and that should be respected by others in this draft.
Obviously, if The Agent of Matt Herges has fallen down on the job, that shouldn’t jeopardize the status of those that haven’t.

Opinions here? I’m open to other’s opinions. I’m just not sure how we can draw a line between supporting and not supporting.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
yeah. I don’t blame you. I don’t think there’s an easy way to do this whole adoption thing to ensure max support and organization, but I suppose a draft is as good as any, though seemingly a lot more work than just a free for all.
Thanks for organizing it, by the way.

And I truly understand what you’re saying. You’re a big member in this community. Give me any ideas.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
at about 300 lbs, I’m a big member of every community I’m a part of. But seriously…
I think where I’d start is going over the list of known adoptions and asking those folks that meet certain criteria if they want to keep their guys. The criteria I’d use is: frequency of participation and total participation and open support. If a member hasn’t had any site activity in awhile, say 3 months (or Jan 1, 2009, etc), then he doesn’t meet the first cutoff. If they don’t have at least, e.g. 3000 comments, then they don’t meet the cutoff. If their adoptee isn’t mentioned in their signature, then they don’t meet the cutoff.
If the previous parents want to keep their guy, they lose draft status and get to keep their guy (people like me). If they want a new guy, they go into the draft as you’ve set it up.
For those who’s player has left the org (like Agent Jack or Ray Durham, etc), that member should be treated as those who want a new player.
After that, as I said, your draft idea seems good.

Though I think 3k is a bit of a high threshold. I have ~1000 comments here over the last year, and I think I’ve been fairly active. However there should be some sort of benchmark.

I was actually sort of thinking long the same lines…. Contrary to popular belief there actually are one or two grrrrrls here. So a player could have an adopta-mom and an adopta-dad, but then again, this is SF so maybe Steve Holm could have 2 daddies. Nevermind this is complicated enough!
I do think people who have adopted players in the past and have gone so far as to sponsor their son’s baseball-reference.com page should get to keep their players.
I personally have no desire to adopt a player this summer.
This reminds me of the Ishikawa deal, Andy from DC and I worked out two and a half weeks ago.
I honestly don’t know why we all shouldn’t just claim the adopted Giant we want. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t all just gather round Tim-el. We’d get at least the 40-man + top 30 or so prospects.

Still like Pucetas very much, but I’ve been following Ishikawa since we drafted him, and been a supporter since he hit 6 HR in instruction league, and especially so after seeing him blast one out in San Jose.
I would have tried for parenthood for him in the first draft had I been aware, but at that time I think I was wallowing in pity after getting laid off and missed it. By the time I was aware that there had been a draft, the only prospect I liked who was available was Pucetas.

actually tell us why you deserve an Ishikawa?
co-dad of IshikaBOOM w/AfDC.
Ishikawa, let the boy hit against lefties.
Well
I got reprimanded by a moderator because someone here had the nerve to say that TI should just be DFAed after starting slowly in A-ball, about 4-5 years ago. Let’s just say the other guy didn’t play nice (he tried to put me down using my dead father just because my father died when I was young) and I decided to not put up with it and fought back. So I’ve been attacked because of my support of Ishikawa.
I’ve been writing in my blog about how Dodd Stadium has been screwing up his (and other power hitters) power numbers in AA for years now. I defended his status as a prospect because of this.
Some people here have been accusing me of being in love with Ishikawa for years now, just because I’ve been defending his prospect-hood for the past 2-3 years. And to be clear, I didn’t know how good he might become, but felt that Dodd was masking how well he did in AA, which was as good as he did in San Jose, and thus, he should still be considered a prospect, if for no reason other than we had so few position prospects, we shouldn’t throw one under the bus just because of Dodd (luckily that team is moving to Richmond in 2010 most probably).
Here is a list of the posts I’ve written on him: http://obsessivegiantscompulsive.blogspot.com/search/label/Travis%20Ishikawa
I also wrote on him at my old blog, Biased Giants Fanatic, but there’s no easy way to get to the articles, other than searching my old blog.
Is that good enough? And will WalrusMan allow this?

Hey!
Zito is still technically mine until the draft. Also, I think he’ll do beautifully this season especially since he is sans the gf.
Also, what are my chances of keeping Senor Zito? I’ll be cool with fighting chance for him but it doesn’t hurt to ask does it? ;)

There will be a draft of all the players in the Giants system. The draft order will be based on who has the most comments. However, if you meet the following criteria, you can keep your current adoptee, thus removing him from the draft.:
- Active since December 1, 2008.
- More than 2000 comments.
- Some sort of evidence of support for adoptee. (Signature, posts about it, etc.)
So, for example, in your case you meet all the criteria so you can keep Manny if you want and no one else can draft him. Or, if you’d prefer to throw him back in the pool, you’ll have a pretty high draft spot since you’re one of the more regular commenters.

OK, so we’ve cleared up the “keeps” rule. Now how’s the draft order gonna go?
It's my blarg! Quick Pitch
It’ll be in order of Posts+Comments. Once draft day comes I’ll tabulate it up.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
if we don’t get the gigante we wanted, can we get first dibs on the June draft? Are we going with the traditional family option= possible ma and pa kettle?
I’m thinking we should just do one parent unless there’s something worked out a la Ishikawa.
Perhaps we should do this as a yearly thing, with the new draftees not having any parents until the next adoption phase. Then we wouldn’t have millions of “I CLAIM HIM” posts.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
Not really, if you have several who want to CLAIM HIM. Then use the post count or whatever you chose for the criteria for the initial drafters. I would think most that have an intense interest in the draft already have adopted.
The other thing you could do in the draft is let people pick “open options”. It could be like a priority waiting list “Open option #1” would have right of first refusal to the next player signed/drafted (traded players adopters still have first right to what said player brings back). If the poster declines to take that player, he/she goes to the bottom of the waiting list and “Option #2” has the option.
It has kind of a fun “What’s behind door #2” aspect and would provide some order to the “I claim him!” chaos.

Okay, so not the moment he was drafted, and there was wheedling involved. But still, like half an hour later I’d adopted Jackson Williams as well. It’s more fun if its someone I have to actually defend instead of, say, the best prospect in our system, so I wouldn’t exactly be miserable if the rulemakers decide not to forgive my 197 post deficit and instead move him to a less slutty home. I’m 110% sure I could get Jackson Williams back in the draft…
Anyway, just for funsies, I found this when I searched “bumgarner multiphasic draft.”

Any advice that can stave off morning sickness is the best advice in the world, IMO. :) Unfortunately for me, ginger only worked part of the time for the first couple of months—by month five there was nothing that could tame the beast! Here’s to hoping that month six through nine means morning sickness goes away for good. (Will be a little poetic justice if it clears up in time for me to enjoy going to the ballpark without turning green at the sight of all the once-delish food; had to skip a WBC semi-final because of the queasies, which was not cool.)
And GUS Ginger Ale is awesome, even for the non-morning sickness sufferers. If you’re a fan of ginger ale, I highly recommend it for the light, crisp taste—can find it at Whole Foods. /end hijack as well

:) My Giants off-season this past year has pretty much consisted of 1) throwing up and 2) buying a short-sale house that sucks up every waking hour w/ home improvement projects. It’s a damn miracle that I was even able to participate with any semblance of coherence in my recent fantasy baseball draft. (Lost out on Pablo – had no idea his draft stock was so high and was hoping to nab him in the later rounds. D’oh.)
Honestly, I’m just not that good at the hijacking banter stuff – I feel stupid every time I try so I tend to stick to the Gameday threads. etc. If that makes me lose out on Gerald, it makes me lose out—it’s what I get for not being more outgoing! And if I don’t have an adoptee… won’t be the end of the world (my bummer feeling is already starting to fade) – it’s enough to just be able to post here when I’m overwhelmed with Padresness as a homesick current res. of SD.
And to whomever gets Posey, take good care! I was stoked when we drafted him and am very excited about his Giants career. Cheer the lad on well!

Tibia or not tibia?
That is the question.
Anyway, my point is that

Any way Ishikawa can have 3 parents?
Else, I would like to switch to Nate Schierholtz, who has been in my sig 4ever, since Wendell is off the board already (another of my sigs). Nothing against Pucetas, just liked them more but they were off the board already when I found out about this the first time.
Or is there any way I can land Angel Villalona?

Well, you can either keep Pucetas or you can go into the draft and see if you can pick up someone you want in the draft. Nate and Angel aren’t already claimed yet, but you’d have to go into the draft and see if you get them or not.

I thought it said above that if I supported the player through my sig, it would be fine for me to select that player. I’ve had Nate in there for a long while, even before Pucetas. I doubt the person who you assigned Ishikawa so quickly and easily to had that in his sig as long as I’ve had Nate in mine.

Nope the first point of everything was that you actually adopted the player. Then you had first dibs on him if you wanted to keep him and had the qualifications.

OK, sorry
I saw this:
"Alright. Let’s go with this…
- Active since December 1, 2008.
- More than 2000 comments.
- Some sort of evidence of support for adoptee. (Signature, posts about it, etc.)"
But missed the context above it that caused your comment.

So please put me in the draft
I’ll take my chances there and see who I can select. Will there be an updated TAKEN list posted? Or do I need to keep track of who has been taken off the board?

I'd like to keep Steve Holm
despite the fact he’s been given the shaft by the organization. He’s funny-looking and clutch! Plus there’s the whole Steve Holt! thing. Oh, and look at the signature for evidence, I guess?
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
Since I changed my account name a while back...
I’m just going to request that Duke Neukom be taken off the draft board and see where that gets me. :P
I’m pretty sure I’d have a draft position somewhere around infinity+7 anyway
Aurilia sounds like a planet out of StarFox.
So, sometime tonight I will put together the draft order and list who has reserved which Giants. Then perhaps tonight perhaps tomorrow I’ll start the draft thread.

Come on mods
If you keep deleting johnnyxboy’s comments, how will I mock him? The whole Seinfeld references thing was hilarious, by the way.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
Whatever happened to the 24-hour time limit before posting?
Anyway…
Will there be a time limit for picks?
He’d been a member before just not posted I guess.
Anyway, I think if I start the thread tonight or Wednesday we’ll have enough time to get through the picks by opening day if we don’t have a time limit. If you’ve got a pick coming up, just check MCC regularly (which you should be doing regularly anyway [alright where’s my check Grant]).

I think I could call out my guy right now. I don’t think there’s anyone out there interested in him.
Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.
