4 To Cut.. Care to Guess?
With Taschner now gone with a minor leaguer in return, Bochy now has a simpler short term decision for today. There is only 3 left to cut to bring them down to 30 as he suggested would happen today on KNBR yesterday. There is the potential addition of Ohman to be considered, but that merely factors in the overall non-roster invitee decisions to be made.
I think its pretty clear that one of the three to dropped out of the running on the active roster is Bowker. Between Nate, Torres, Velez, Aurilia, Guzman, and even Sandoval, his positions available to him are simply full up.
I'm having trouble with the other two cuts, but I think it'll be by Joe Martinez and Osiris Matos who get told today to head over to the minor league camp. We expect Lowry and Romo to go DL, but they need to retain Valdez since he's out of options.
With regard to the non-roster invitees, I think Aurilia is still a strong consideration, with only Guzman providing opening day competition for that spot. Velez could be trade fodder if the older Torres is considered a better bet. I'm not hot on Hinshaw so far this spring, but he got a reprieve with Taschner gone (see Ohman above). I only bring up Hinshaw here since we have the whole Perdomo/Medders/Miller slot to consider. I think Medders has earned it, and can play the long reliever as can Miller. Sadly, Perdomo will likely be shipped home unless packaged in a trade.

And I got the golden boy from yesterday: Uribe
I just don’t see the fit, but he’ll stick with the team until AT&T and likely be packaged with someone else in a trade. He’s basically redundant with Frandsen/Burriss/Aurilia.
He may well start in Fresno for the better part of the year and try a stage a come back from there. Seems to me, the three you listed and then Velez are beating him out of his bench role, and Ishikawa and Pablo are sewing up their spots at the corners.

Ishikawa, let the boy hit against lefties.
Hinshaw will get an extended tryout. National league wisdom is, you need 2 lefties at least in the pen.
hey Pitt, I would find a 25 man roster thread more interesting.
for position reserves—if they keep Burris at second, I think we carry:
Frandsen, Velez, Nate for sure
1/2 of Aurilia, Uribe,
1/2 of Torres, Holm and I lean to Uribe, Torres. I also lean to Manny playing second in the bigs for about a 60 day tryout. A year in Fresno playing short would not hurt him.

Not to sound all negative about Von Ironglove but if the Giants are going to keep Burriss up along with Frandsen then some please tell me just what is the point of putting Velez on the 25 man? Frandsen has done some OF in ’07 (and he was not that bad) and Torress provides a better glove then Zorak. The Age of the Mantis might be over.

Since they can send down a player and still use them am thinking a couple of pitchers are on the list. Another would be JBowker and GPosey.
Posey is already scheduled to go w/ the team to AT&T

I’m not so sure that Bowker couldn’t make the team. However, if he does, Aurilia won’t be on the team. Bowker would play both OF and 1B if he made the team, IMO
Todd Jennings: If he's on the DL, he can't suck as much, right?
I still think that its Aurilia's ability to play 3B that kills Bowker, and in my book, also Uribe.
If the Brass want to find a way to keep Torres, they’ll find other redundancy in the OF (Velez/Bowker)

I think its Bowkers ability to only hit Fast balls and mistakes. He needs to show he can handle the other stuff and Spring Training in AZ will not afford him much of chance at that. The think 2-3 months as a Grizzly is his fate.
Meduim term I am still bullish on John Boy just think that uncertainity in his game combined with the uncertainy at the CI spots doom him this early in the year.

I agree with Pittsburgian. Plus Bowker has the option left, pretty much skipped AAA last season. And then Ishikawa and Schierholtz have the left-handed batting thing, and Rich (or maybe Uribe) have the right handed bat that matches better .

Ishikawa, let the boy hit against lefties.
I concede the point
It makes more sense in the long term to have torres up on the club, at 31, then it does to have Bowker up when he could get regular playing time in Fresno. Bowker could have a future on this team, so using his option makes sense
