Open Gameday Thread 3/28
There are two types of people in this world now: people who are convinced that Desi Relaford was the missing piece to a championship team, and those who are convinced that Ronny Paulino was the missing piece to a championship team. Choose wisely, as you'll never be able to switch back.

the fact that Giants Brass was able to turn Jack Taschner into a prospect who could be an “above average” starter is just totally mind blowing to me.

So you're saying Russ Ortiz had a brother named Hector Correa?

Derin McMains had five fingers, but he only used three.
Heh, Gameday still on warmup, it’s 6-0 Giants already.

Goodbye Jack Taschner. Now Bochy has to find another reliever to make him look dumb
and (for what its worth) only expensive in retrospect
by thethrillisgone on Mar 28, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions
I realize he’s older and coming off of a bad year, but four times a .300 hitter (as recently as 2007) and two Gold Gloves does not a mediocre player make.
Goodbye Jack Taschner. Now Bochy has to find another reliever to make him look dumb
Though he was actually a little below average last year, over his career he’s been well above average.
my point is why pay him for his 2007 production when the year is 2009 and no other teams will even come close to paying that money
at the time the Giants’ signed him, nobody had a problem with the salary. They even complimented the Giants’ on only giving him two years. Only in retrospect is it an expensive signing.
Goodbye Jack Taschner. Now Bochy has to find another reliever to make him look dumb
and your inside info
that he would have signed for that “very easily” at that time comes from where?
since no other club was going anywhere near $15MM and the GMs said so. They thought $6MM a year a stretch
and gms
are always honest about everything, amirite?
And where’s this article with opinions from all 29 other gms? I’d like to see it.
Also, Furcal signed for 3/30, and he’s been about the same as renteria with the bat over his career, and more injury prone.
supply/demand Furcal got more because he was wanted. Do not have ALL 29 GM story but go back and you can see stories where GMs are shocked at this signing and then read the national columnist reports about how the baseball industry thought of the signing. The might have like the two years but not the monies
from the Fangraphs story on the signing
However, even if we project him as a -10 run defender at shortstop in 2009, his league average offense still makes him a +2 win player compared to a replacement level shortstop. Given a rumored price of $9 million per year for two years, the Giants are essentially paying $4.5 million per win on a short term deal, which is about what free agents were going for last winter.
For San Francisco, this isn’t a bad deal – they get a guy who should rebound and re-establish some value without any long term risk, and they fill a hole with an average player while waiting for the kids to develop.
Hardly sounds like a “vintage sabean overpay”
While the key point on that is “last winter” When the Giants signed him that was still the value of this offseason.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
yup
no one’s going to argue that the market didn’t fall off the cliff, but when we signed Renteria, FA’s were still going for about what they did in offseasons past.
do you read the words “last year” ? NO GM was going to step up and pay Renteria anywhere near the money he got. Why pay $6MM more? Save that scratch for development and signings, free beer, dancers etc
I'd like to remind you
of the CC, Tex and Furcal signings. That was the FA context when we signed Renteria. The market hadn’t yet gone off a cliff.
Perhaps later in the off-season. But what if instead of going to us for that 3 weeks later, 2 weeks later he’s signed for 2yrs/16MM?
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
NO – N-O team was interested in signing Renteria at a price only the Giants would consider. It was vintage Sabean overpay
How do we know? we never will. Compare him to Rafael Furcal who got 3/30 or 4/42 and Edgar Renteria who got 2/18.5 or 3/28.5. Take their last three years and how much they were worth during it:
Furcal: $29.5MM
Renteria: $37.4MM
Comparing the two, I’d rather have Renteria.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
Fred Lewis is not horseshit or dog shit, and he put up similar numbers ($11.4MM) last year.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
a vintage sabean overpay
would have been 4/32 or thereabouts, not 2/18. Let’s say other gms would have signed him for 2/12, so we would have had to go to at least 2/13. We have NO other options at SS, except for Burriss, and I’m OK with Sabean not gifting the starting ML SS job to a guy who just last year couldn’t hit at high A.
So let’s say Sabean signs him for 2/13. We have an extra 5m, what exactly does that get us this year and next?
He was worth the overpay.

seriously
since you brought up the trade thing, please find at least one team with a league average SS or better that could be had in a trade without us giving up a piece of the future.
Oh, you can’t? OK, you shouldn’t have brought it up then.
k
what would it take to get them? (HINT: League average SS = Valuable.)
Remember, you can’t trade anyone we expect to contribute in ‘10-’11.
Villy, if GM my first priority is pitching. Next is defense up the middle. A defensive minded SS who can him some is important to team success. I like Izturis, Aybar or Wood. Believe Angels also have another kid SS down in the farm. Be willing to trade any B level prospects or just about anyone on ML roster to get my the SS that I deem important.
um no
no less an authority than Bill Simmons absolutely destroyed the Giants immediately after that signing. He said it was one of the worst of the offseason- I don’t think he’s right, but it was pretty bad, even at the time.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:

At that many runs up...
I don’t mind if my pitcher gives up a run or two while keeping his pitch count down. But if it starts to get out of control then I worry that it’s not the pitcher trying to keep his pitches down.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
Unless the Giants’ somehow make it through the season without an injury to anyone in the rotation, Pucetas has a real shot at getting the first call. He should be thinking in his mind that the score is 0-0. He’s not going to impress with a 9-7 victory.
Goodbye Jack Taschner. Now Bochy has to find another reliever to make him look dumb
No he isn't..
But if he’d gone 6 innings allowing 3-4 runs on solo shots and things like a double then a double then shut it down I’d agree with how he’d pitched the game. Even if he’d given up a lot of hard hit balls for outs, if he were just pitching to get outs then that is a strategy.

On a serious note, wish Sabean would have shopped around for a young SS to grow with this team once he considered Manny Burriss a 2b
I can see the reasoning behind this. I’d rather Burriss stay at SS than become a 2B, which would have meant him starting in AAA or acquire a 2B (Orlando Cabrera would have worked well here).
