Bumgarner with a 29.4K% in low A: fantastic strikeout numbers

Also I’m willing to give Fairley the benefit of the doubt and be patient with him, but I certainly don’t see him as a top prospect.

This guy is a prime example of the problems of trying to analyze prospects from a statistical standpoint alone. It is pretty clear he hasn’t seen these players much, if at all, and even if he did, he doesn’t know what to do with it.

Care to expand?
I’m happy to discuss methods.
I’ve visited the Giants minor league camp in each of the last two seasons…even got some video this year. I do read scouting information and discuss prospects with many scouting-minded people. I wrote for a scouting-minded baseball magazine. I’ve scouted dozens of college and minor league players. And I’m committed to learning more about scouting.

I did start watching The Daily Show early enough that I remember when there was no audience, and you could hear the writers guffawing in the background at their own jokes.

PB&J on sourdough: yes or no?
My kids love sourdough and would be happy if there were no other kinds of bread in the world.
I love sourdough, but to me PB&J calls for a sturdy wheat bread.

Lunch: no clue
Dinner: possibly going out with friends to see Monsters vs. Aliens and have dinner. I’m not really that high on the film, plus it’s in 3D and I hate 3D films. The glasses either never fit over my regular glasses or they give me a headache, and the red/blue auras around stuff when you don’t wear the glasses are extremely annoying. I’d rather not pay $15 to go to a movie that I can’t watch. But I might be dragged…

I’m just glad you’re helping to reduce the world supply.
Also, I heard an interview last year about how commercial bananas could very easily become extinct in the Americas. They’re all genetically identical, and thus very susceptible to disease. There’s a type of fungus (or something like that) that’s extremely virulent and kills the type of bananas we eat dead that’s found in other continents. It hasn’t reached the Americas yet, but if even a small amount did, all commercially viable banana trees could be gone within a couple of years.

Does it matter?
If the front office likes him, they’ll resign him. If they don’t, a contract has never kept a manager from getting fired before.

The last time the Giants fired a manager under contract was 1985.

But I think it’d be a mistake to assume that we’re not gonna see him back in 2010 just because his contract is up.

In spring training, gameday pitch-counts have often been wildly off. One time it said Lincecum had 0 balls but one walk.

on non-gameday enabled games (the ones that don’t have a gameday option from the main mlb site), it gives 4 pitches for a walk, 3 for a k, and 1 for a ball in play
by Viliphied on Mar 27, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not this game...
This one is showing balls and strikes in the same at bats—even those not ending in walks and strikeouts. I suppose I could go through all the at bats and count each pitch. But that would be kind of weird.
I actually think it is possible for Sanchez to have that low of a pitch count. My guess is that hitters are generally a little bit more hackerish up there in spring games.

It hurts, but it’s no worse than the dentist (maybe a bit longer) IMHO. Although every time I get one (only a few times), I think ‘it didn’t hurt this bad last time’.

Also
Taschner is/was the longest tenured Giant, in terms of total time in the organization – he debuted with Salem-Keizerway back in 1999. If he’s gone, I guess that makes Noah Lowry (2001, also with Salem-Keizer). After that….maybe Merkin Valdez? He debuted with the Hagerstown Suns back in 2003.

I thought the team could get more in return for Taschner.

I didn’t expect them to get much, but at first glance, he hardly seems like an upgrade from Holm. Maybe he’s a defensive whiz or something?
It seems clear the Giants don’t think much of Holm, though – they hardly used him while he was up last year, tried to replace him with Notgardo, and now replaced him with this guy.
