Everyone in baseball seems to have fallen in love with San Diego State's Stephen Strasburg. From his 102 mph fastball, right down to his "piercing powder-blue eyes", scouts are drooling over this guy. Timmy had a lot of hype coming out of Washington, but this level of praise is just unheard of...

so sad

my cousin and i got noah lowry's autograph after he came out of a porta-potty. he was nice about it.

you think he got his money back?

by boonitez on Mar 28, 2009 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Anyone else feel this kid is too good to be true?

Boswell’s article was pretty enlightening. And with the concerns about his mechanics and taxing his arm with the velocity, he might burn out really quick. The last time someone had this much hype, I think it was Prior and we know how that turned out….

by Hobbes2d on Mar 27, 2009 10:33 AM PDT reply actions

In all my ignorance, I am concerned. They only guys that throw 100+ are relievers, correct me if I am wrong.

I think that most of this hype is happening now b/c he is the first pitching prospect that throws “nuclear war heads” since the Internet has come of age (i.e. MCC is now in existence to discuss prospects) that doesn’t have any major flaws. I think he can be a great pitcher but I would rather have David Price.

Nolan Ryan

not that he always threw 100 mph

by Giant Voodoo on Mar 27, 2009 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, Randy Johnson used to regularly approach and exceed 100 mph in his prime and he’s still going strong into his mid 40’s.

by deuce deuce on Mar 27, 2009 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, he’s good, but with the amount of money he reportedly wants and his possible mechanical issues, he would also be risky in some ways. We’ll see, but I have a feeling the reports are a little overhyped.

At the kind of numbers being rumored or leaked last weekend — $50 million for six years — there’s nothing to see here

What the hell? Seriously?!

by rotorueter on Mar 28, 2009 7:52 AM PDT up reply actions

I think he’s a serious arm problem waiting to happen. But when he’s healthy, he’ll be great.

Adoptive Parent of Francisco Peguero. He can throw, he can run, he can hit(fastballs), and he's Dominican. What else do you need to know?

That’s what everyone says about Lincecum. Actually, that’s the main reason he fell to us in the draft

Wall-E for Best Picture 2008

by Useful_Idiot on Mar 27, 2009 4:50 PM PDT up reply actions

yes, but I suspect there is more to it here. The Lincecum fear was more just ‘so small+big velocity= injury fear’ thinking, without much careful attention to his mechanics—and that’s important. Strasburg has some very worrying elements to his motion.

Scouts don’t seem worried.

by Dan from NM on Mar 28, 2009 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Scouts said Mark Prior had the “perfect mechanics.”

I’ve read several breakdowns that point too his inverse W as a very bad thing. Essentially, his release point is great, and everything else is questionable at best.

by MonkeyChow on Mar 30, 2009 5:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Were Prior’s problems more related to his mechanics, or to his manager being Dusty Baker?

by bondslegend on Mar 30, 2009 9:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes

Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

Piercing blue eyes, hm? Bromance.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' I fear MCC as gone to the Pink Fluffy side of the internet, first it was Cats, then came the piercing blue eyes and discussing the soul patch of a player.

I am afraid to find out how much farther down the rabbit hole we can go.

We spent about half of last year discussing a soul patch, actually. It was all Brian Wilson’s fault.

Blasphemer

Two words why Strasburg is not the second coming of Christ: Matt Wieters. Pretty sure if they were ever on the same team some sportswriters might die from hyperbole alone.

The only way that happens is if he breaks his arm prior to the draft.
