OT: Good Instrumentals
A lot of people here seem to be very fond of music, so I was hoping I could get some suggestions for good instrumental music. I like to have something on in the backround while I'm studying or doing busy work, and it may sound silly but I find myself getting distracted by lyrics.
If anyone has any suggestions (preferably specific albums or songs) on some good music that is just instrumentals I would really appreciate it. The music genre does not matter, although I don't really need any suggestions for classical (I'm all about the Bach). It doesn't have to be entirely void of vocals, just as few as possible.
I have tried downloading random stuff that looks like it might be good, but most of it turns out to be crap (I'm looking at you, Chris Botti). It would be nice to at least have some kind of direction for my search.
Thanks in advance.

I’m a big fan of BOC, love ’em.
Check out DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing album. It’s a classic slice of delicious hip-hop. I listen to a lot of electronic music, which is primarily instrumental I guess, but I’d also recommend to you The Future Sound of London’s Life Forms, Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works II, and Proem’s Socially Inept.
Just a few favorites off the top of my head.
DJ Shadow FTW
Love some Automator & RJD2, too.

Older RJD2 is great — I’ve got Dead Ringer on my ipod for the gym — but his last album, the folky thing, was pretty terrible. I hope he returns to hip-hop, but I think I’ve read somewhere that he wasn’t going to.
RE: Shadow, “Building Steam With a Grain of Salt” is such a badass track. Always one of my favorites.

He’s a great guitarist but I can’t stand his music. Same thing with Steve Vai and Eric Johnson.

I listen to some foreign stuff. Here is a good one (don’t know the name of it): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkEuYijmrrs
From my eMusic history...
Amon Tobin – Supermodified
Aphex Twin – Richard D. James
Arovane – Tides
Battles – Mirrored
Blockhead – Downtown Science
Burial – Untrue
Explosions in the Sky – The Earth is Not a Cold, Dead Place
Four Tet – Rounds
James Blackshaw – The Cloud of Unknowing
Quiet Village – Silent Movie
Ratatat – LP
The Octopus Project – Hello Avalanche
+1’s on Burial, Arrovane, Blockhead, and Four Tet.
Have you heard of 310? They remind me a lot of Four Tet. Kinda collage-y, but really beautiful.
I’ll check it out. It’s on eMusic, so I’m always looking for new stuff there.
If you don’t know Quiet Village, get that one. I know you like Blockhead, RJD2, etc…, so I’m sure you’d love it.

My personal ethical standards: if I’ve unilaterally decided that the artist doesn’t need anymore money — Metallica, for example — I get torrents. Otherwise, I buy the album. Amazon has a huge selection of MP3s, but it gets expensive. Screw iTunes and its DRM.
So I do eMusic, and it’s awesome. It’s a drag at times when they don’t have an entire label (like Sub Pop, dammit), but it’s totally worth the money. I pay $25 a month for 100 downloads, which is a huge savings for me compared to the $200 CD sprees I used to go on. If you have any interest in metal, eMusic has a great selection. Their jazz and classical is okay, their hip-hop is meh, and their classic rock selection is garbage, but their indie section is well stocked.
by Grant Brisbee on Mar 25, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions
And I consider a lot of metal to be instrumental even if there are vocals. Like Wolves in the Throne Room or Krallice — sure, there’s a lot of screaming going on, but it isn’t the focal point at all. It’s more like another instrument on top of the pile.

I work at home and have the stereo playing all day unless the game is on or I’m listening to KFJC. I also prefer instrumentals while working or something I know so well it disappears into the background (Grateful Dead, Tom Waits, Neil Young).
Here’s what I dig in various genres:
Traditional Jazz:
Rock/Avant Jazz/Modern Orchestral:
Non-Instrumental but soft, and easy to work to:
Also, the Soul Jazz series of compilations Dub, Funk, etc.
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long
re: Zorn/Masada
Yeah, one of those nights was the Secret Chiefs doing their version and I totally forgot it was happening. But theirs is a seriously great instrumental album, called Xaphan, if anyone is into somewhat freaky middle eastern style instrumentals. Definitely toned down the Zornish mucky-muck.
by Stoned Slacker on Mar 25, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Wow...
…Ornette has lived long enough to become a “traditional” jazz artist!
Personally I find Ornette – and Coltrane, for the most part – a little too, well, assertive to function as background music. I’d go for a slightly mellower toned saxophonist like Gordon or Sonny Rollins while working. Piano works well too, and I’d add Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell to the pianists in your list.
I haven’t heard recent John Zorn but based on older stuff he, too, is someone I can’t imagine putting on in the background…
Adoptive father to the All-Father. Does that make me the All-Grandfather?
I for one don’t care for that new fangled Jass music. I wish it would have stayed in New Orleans where it belonged… those flappers with their short dresses and loose ways are going to ruin America.

There used to be a band called Pell Mell that put out some great instrumental rock. Try “Interstate” or “Flow”, they’re both really good albums.
My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.
oh, and also
Japancakes (slowcore band from Georgia…did a lot of dreamy, twang-y stuff with slide guitar)
and
The Dirty Three (Really, really awesome Australian trio led by Warren Ellis on violin)
My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.
I’m not sure how much play it gets as a serious piece of art, but the original Batman soundtrack by Danny Elfman has always been one of my favorites. There are some absolutely classic bursts of classical music on there.
Also maybe:
Bozzio Levin Stevens – Situation Dangerous – supermegavirtuosos keeping it in check for some very good tunes.
Ulver – just about everything is amazing for last 10 years, but perhaps Lyckantropen Themes (tripped out symphonic) or Perdition City (if you like straight trip hop)
Actually....
I think I meant Svidd Neger instead of Lyckantropen……but both really neat albums.

I loved Eluvium’s album “Copia” from a couple years ago.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
Eluvium is some really nice ambient. I’m a bit of an ambient fan. I love classic Eno, Steve Roach, William Basinski, etc. In fact, I think William Basinski’s ‘Disintegration Loops’ might be one the moust haunting, and beautiful pieces of ambient music ever recorded.
Copia is a nice blend of nice piano and ambient stuff. I haven’t listened to his really ambient albums yet though.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

The Advantage!
It’s a rock band that plays old 8-bit Nintendo music, and it’s really good. No, seriously, it’s actually really good. I love it for studying because it’s energetic and there are no lyrics. It’s also great in the car because it makes driving around seem like a video game, and consequently, fun.

French DJ group Birdy Nam Nam
Not your traditional kind of DJ act as there’s 4 of them and the way they weave their own part into the collective song is just fascinating. Self-titled album is great and I strongly suggest Abbesses and Jazz at Home off that one.
Did I miss it, or has anyone went with some traditional jazz along the lines of Miles Davis?
Kind of Blue or Essential Miles Davis (2 disc) are must haves.
Maybe some Wynton Marsalis is your thing if you’re into less of the jazz fusion and more into the modern stuff.
I'm missing Omar and all his "Dreamy-ness".
The Mermen
Psychedelic instrumental surf jams. ‘Dancing In Her Sleep’ off of ‘Food for Other Fish’ is long and delicious… it’s hard to call them a surf band because the songs are longer, more complicated and melodious than what you’d normally expect, but it’s definitely music inspired by the waves.
