My job title is “Content Screener.” The company I work for does the online obituary sections for newspapers – they come with guestbooks, and basically, my main job is to make sure people don’t use the guestbooks to reveal that the deceased was having an affair, or to blame Aunt Mary for sending him to an early grave, or just basically from being jerks and causing fights.

Hilarious and inappropriate obituaries are rare, though they do happen. What I have is a huge (it would be 51 pages if I printed it out) collection of insane things people have posted (or tried to post) to the guestbooks.

History Teacher. Seventh Grade.
On spring break for the next two weeks. Suck it, other professions!
On the other hand, I just got a pink slip and there’s a decent chance that it will not get rescinded (5-8 million dollars are being cut in our district and I’m a first year teacher and there are other reasons too). So I am looking for another job for next year.

Another teaching job
Yes, I know of edjoin. I know of other places to look, too. I’ll have a job next year. I’d estimate that I have a 50/50 chance of coming back to the same district next year. But if I don’t, I might get a job in another district. And if I don’t, the place that I teach at on Saturdays offered to hire me on full-time.

Wow, two weeks for spring break? I went to approximately 79,000 schools (okay, 8) and I never had two weeks!
Never has a poster been more correct in the history of the internet. Ever! - ResDog on yours truly
when we were on a year round schedule we usually had 4 weeks, but were in school till the end of june. Now we’re back to stoopit traditional schedule and only have a week :(
I know some people like the year-round schedule, but I always hated the idea. Having a full summer vacation was a key part of maintaining my sanity back in my middle school/junior high/high school days.
When I went to school in Central Jersey, we were in class until almost the end of June, but in that case it was because we had all the Jewish holidays off.
Never has a poster been more correct in the history of the internet. Ever! - ResDog on yours truly
yeah, but as a teacher I find that having little patches of sanity throughout the year helped me get through the year better. In the past we’d won awards for attendance, this year our attendance is horrible.
Plus on the year round schedule it was nice to go to Yosemite or Tahoe in November or April when nobody else was there.
It's fairly unique
I believe we tack on an extra week of school at the beginning of the year.

I am living the good life of a retiree.
Before the current downturn some companies were offering buyouts to their employees to get rid of the old and bring in the new. Research Scientist. I’m pretty much a specialist in sequencing different genomes, plasmids, DNA fragments, and PCR products.
I listen to other people talk. Sometimes I get to talk. Mostly, I just listen, though. Sometimes I get to write stuff, but not very often right now. I’m supposed to write about what I heard other people say, but I don’t do it as often because it doesn’t seem to matter very much. I look at a lot of documents, but they’re basically all the same, just the names are different, so I don’t really look that closely anymore.
Basically, I just surf the internet all day and look for more professionally rewarding work, which unsurprisingly, I’m not finding.

I loved busting people on “I returned X movie on time.” Oh no you didn’t. I worked every day in the afternoons when they switched the due back times to noon. I cleared out the drop boxes almost by myself every day during the week. And when caught in a lie they’d still insist we take off late fees because “the customer is always right.”
My misanthropy did not begin with that job, but it certainly added fuel to the fire.

There was one really cool dude who came in all the time. Our store was next to a day spa and the guy worked in there as the massage therapist. He’d come in every day on his lunch break to rent an old movie, always on VHS. He said he watched the movies between clients. We’d talk about movies every time he came in and I helped him pick which ones to rent. When I quit, he made it a point to come into the store my last day and say goodbye.
There was also a lady who came into the store on Tuesday mornings when the new releases were out. She was another one who would hang out and talk about the movies, and she’d leave with four or five movies. She always turned them in on time and she was super friendly.
Now see why do people have to be such shits? There are nice people out there.

you know what this reminds me of?
the first blog I ever read, I think, was something I stumbled upon while I was in college – this must have been like 2001 or so – and it was written by some girl that worked in a video store, and it was mostly about the creepy guys who would come in to the store and masturbate looking at the adult video boxes.
Still defending Rich Aurilia, and the Niners' classic unis
I never had that, but I did have a few creep-ass guys try to get me to go into the parking lot and do god only knows what. While I was working.
Oh and then there was the time when some punk kid tried to shoplift video games from my store. I was training another CSR and the guy was hardcore into religion. While we held the kid in the store waiting for the police the new guy read the kid the riot act about how God punishes thieves. It was hilarious.

The younger brother of one of my oldest friends works for Blockbuster. About two years ago, while we were briefly staying with them and apartment hunting, his boss told him that Blockbuster had “won” its war with Netfix, bought them out, and the announcement would come the next day. Still waiting for that won…

I’m still at OfficeMax, now working mornings (3-5am starting) and going to school more in the night. I’m hoping to get into a higher up school than West Valley next semester and probably transfer to another OfficeMax if I move to go to another school, it’s not too bad of a job. I’m kind of thinking of going into teaching now, but don’t know about the job market for them.

It all depends upon what you want to teach. Math, science, special education and to a lesser extent English, you’ll find a job, no problem. Other subjects, not so much.
I really don’t know about elementary school opportunities, so ask someone else.

I’d most likely stick away from elementary school, even middle schools. I don’t really want to teach kids really. And I’d look probably in the sciences field.
Thanks for you info, I’m definitely looking to make a decision about what to do sooner rather than later.

Yeah, I’d prefer high school than where I am at right now (middle school). But it’s still good (I like teaching).
If you want to teach science then you shouldn’t have much problem finding a job. Science is right behind math and special education as the subjects that always need teachers.

English Instructor
at a mid-sized community college here in CA. Full-time, tenured, so no problems with pink slips. My condolences and sympathies with those of you in the K-12 system who are currently dealing with that situation. At a JC, particularly in a large department, there are gobs of part-time instructors who are simply not offered classes in a given semester rather than fired (and thus are technically still in the part-time pool), so we appear to be more benevolent than most public schools, when in reality we are still altering lives significantly. Come to think of it, my sympathies also to those of you who are part-timers in the JC system. Hopefully one/some/all of your campuses found a place for you this semester and the semesters upcoming.

My condolences to you. I’ve been taking some JC level classes of late and OMG the level of writing, combined with a lack of common sense, and general knowledge is just appalling.
I have a master’s in early childhood education, and had wanted to teach at the JC level – after the past 2 semesters, I’m thankful everyday that I didn’t ever get hired to teach at a JC!
I made my general education way through JC. I lucked out with some amazing teachers, but I saw a lot of bullshit too. I had a pair of profs for geology lecture and lab. My lecture teacher was fantastic; he really knew physical geology and made it easy to understand, plus he was a fair grader. If you showed him that you understood the concepts and made an effort, he’d give you credit every time.
On the other hand, the lab teacher was terrible. He was an inconsistent grader and the tests were always really tough for no reason. Poorly written questions and ridiculously complex lab assignments. I usually do well with physical science and I’m just a good student to begin with. I had to work my ass off in the class just for a B. I hated him and I hated his class.
Guess which prof was offered the department chair position? You guessed it. After the semester was over I looked over the geology class offerings and didn’t even see the lecture prof’s name listed on any of the classes. I was so pissed.

I started doing community college at Laney, and gave up after about two weeks because it was so maddeningly stupid and disorganized there. Then, I went to DVC the next semester, and had a very good experience for the most part. So it varies a great deal from school to school, I think.
Never has a poster been more correct in the history of the internet. Ever! - ResDog on yours truly
I did have one entirely worthless professor at DVC, though. She showed up 5-10 minutes late every single day, spent the first half of class writing an exhaustive outline on the board, and then spent the second half going over the outline, occasionally adding a point or two. God that was painful.
Never has a poster been more correct in the history of the internet. Ever! - ResDog on yours truly
Yeah DVC is one of the better CCs in the state but then that whole grade changing scandal happened…but there were still times when DVC was stupid. Like when they sent my transcripts to San Jose State in FEBRUARY when I’d filled out paperwork to have them sent four weeks after the end of the semester, which would have fallen before the transfer transcript deadline for CSU. By the time I got the “congratulation your transcripts have been sent” letter from DVC I’d already handed in a sealed copy to the admissions office in San Jose in person, weeks prior.
Stupid.

Having attended community college, a private university, and the University of Illinois system, I can tell you that that kind of stuff happens pretty much everywhere.
My worst incident happened at the private university, actually. I got a private loan to help pay for non-tuition expenses. It came in through the university bursar’s office, they deducted a small amount for a bit of tuition I owed and then cut me a check.
A week later, after I’d spent some of it on groceries and such, I discovered my account was severely overdrawn. Why? The university’s system had retroactively decided I owed tons of money in tuition and stopped payment of the check without even notifying me. So, not only was the money gone, but I suddenly had bank overdraft fees for everything I’d purchased with the money.
And why did the system think I owed money? Because my tuition was paid on a monthly payment plan, not a bulk payment upfront – and even though they offered the payment plan, their system only was set up to recognize a bulk payment.
What’s more, it took about 2 months of my going into the bursar’s office three times a week to get it sorted out and to get my money back.
That kind of sucked.

"that that kind of stuff happens pretty much everywhere"......
One my college buddies trusted the class and unit calculations done by the UC Letters and Science office. He walked in Graduation, went to Europe for the summer and came home to a letter stating he was one class short. Already past the deadline for Financial Aid, he lied about having his degree, got a job and then wrapped up his degree a year later. Lucky they never checked.
For my graduation review, they claimed I was short 1 upper division class in my major. I had to take them through it step by step until they realized they had miscalculated. Bottom line is do your own calculations. The people working for the school are underpaid/ overworked/ and really could care less about you……
