Trade Sense I Am Lacking...

Pitching Surplus + Offensive Defecit + Defensively Adequate = Giants Organization

Offensive Surplus + Pitching Defecit + Defensively Inadequate = Rangers Organization

The Rangers ALWAYS suck at pitching and defense, though they do have a few guys that win gold gloves from time to time.  The Giants have a ton of pitching to deal, and they hit like Special Olympic Bowlers [If you take offense with this comment, take it up with the President of the U.S.].  Can't the two sides better themselves with a trade?

Jonathan Sanchez and Andres Torres for Ian Kinsler and Josh Rupe.  Someone make it happen.

If it were really that simple of an equation, something would have already happened.

by deuce deuce on Mar 20, 2009 3:12 PM PDT reply actions

Point One: The headline makes you sound like Yoda

Point Two: The Rangers have already tried Andres Torres. The fact that they had him a few years back and released him suggests they wouldn’t place too much value in the ’09 version.

Point Three: Sanchez would be the ace of their staff, provided Burlingame product Scott Feldman doesn’t light it up this year, with his new fancy schmancy overhand delivery.

Of course, Point three trumps the first two, so the trade looks decent until you bring up…

Point Four: Ian Kinsler. Are you kidding me? You think that Texas would give up an All Star and one of the best leadoff hitters in baseball for the likes of Sanchez? Impossible. You could throw in all the Special Olympic bowlers you want….no way would Jon Daniels entertain this.

by biff pocoroba on Mar 20, 2009 3:14 PM PDT reply actions

Ian Kinsler...

Look

When you lead the league in every offensive category [exaggeration], and are last in the league in every pitching and defensive category [not much of an exaggeration], then you have too much hitting. They need to trade some of their hitting away.

And their pitching prospects may be good, but they are far from proven. Sanchez is pretty much proven. He’s at least a proven 3 in their rotation, if not 2. If they bolstered their starting staff, and traded away one of their surplus bats, it may lead to more wins.

Economically it makes sense as well. Sanchez may or may not be cheaper now, but he will be soon. There’s no way that Sanchez is going to command the kind of salary that Kinsler will. Texas is going to lose Kinsler when his contract runsout because they won’t be able to afford him.

It’s not even a Win-Now mentality. They’d most likely be able to make room for Sanchez on their payroll. As far as Kinsler… probably not

Sanchez is proven? I love the guy, I think he’s going to be good but a) he has a career ERA+ of 85 and was at 87 last year, b) didn’t have enough stamina to make it through a full season last year and c) has a ridiculously high walk rate. The guy hasn’t proven shit yet, especially not that he’s worth Ian Kinsler straight up (which is what the trade would be, essentially.)

The Rangers wouldn't do this

simply because they don’t have anyone to replace Kinsler, plus his contract is pretty good for them. And he’s not THAT bad of a defender (probably -5 to -7 true talent level)… and his offense more than makes up for it.

BTW, the Rangers actually don’t have too many great hitters.

For the lazy folk:

–Credit to the Giants front office and scouts for signing Guzman and Andres Torres, two six-year minor league free agents. Torres looks to have a place on the team and Guzman, despite his defensive deficiencies, has a potent bat that might be difficult to ignore in the longer term.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Rangers = One of the BEST pitching-prospect teams in MLB.
Neftali Feliz – top-10 prospect
Derek Holland – top-20 prospect
Mike Main – top-75 prospect
Martin Perez – top-100 prospect
Blake Beavan – top-150 prospect
Wilfredo Boscan – top-150 prospect
Kasey Kiker – top-175 prospect
Neil Ramirez – top-300 prospect with top-100 upside

Not to mention: Matt Harrison (former top-100 prospect in the bigs now), Neil Ramirez, Kennil Gomez, Tim Murphy, Robbie Ross, Omar Poveda, Joe Wieland, and Wilmer Font.

They have NO need for Sanchez. The Rangers have the best crop of young pitchers (sorry SF and OAK) in the entire game. They are not as strong in hitting propsects, but they are still strong. There is a 0% chance they will trade Kinsler for another SP with question-marks.

Let me just say that I don't think the Rangers would do this deal.

But counting on Feliz, Holland, and Main to ever make it to the bigs or to stay with the team is probably a bad idea. Just because they have depth in the minors doesn’t mean they will ever have it in the Majors. See DVD.

I'm not

saying that they all will. But when you have 7 top-200 prospects, plus ~10 solid prospects, chances are you will be able to throw out at least 5 guys that will be big league adequate. With those big-upside type of guys, my guess is at least 1 becomes an ace and 1 becomes a good #2. That leaves 3 spaces to be filled by about 15 prospects, a pretty good ratio to set. Overall, in about 2-3 years, the Rangers should have great pitching, good hitting, and below-average defense.

I agree that MiL depth does not equal ML depth, but when you have that much depth, it usually equals enough ML talent.
