“GIANTS-PHILLIES RUMBLING: Another left-handed bullpen option I’ve heard connected with Philadelphia: the Giants’ Jack Taschner, a guy the Phillies also pursued before the trading deadline last year. The Giants are asking for "young players” in return, according to another club that spoke with them."
OH LORD, YES. GRANT ME THIS.
“HELLO, HOUSTON: Clubs that have spoken with the Astros say that in the wake of the loss of Aaron Boone, they’ll give Chris Johnson every opportunity to win Boone’s spot as a platoon third baseman and utility man. But here are a few names that could still show up on their shopping list in the next two weeks: Juan Uribe (Giants),”
Hmm…
I think the assumption of whoever wrote this is that Uribe could “show up on their shopping list” if he doesn’t make the Giants roster.

You can have him. Farewell Hack Trashner.
Rafael Rodriguez: Your number 8 organizational prospect before stepping a foot on American soil and has "looked just super so far," according to Felipe Alou...according to Baggs.
Also,
trade for my Scott Nestor. Stats aren’t great but he’s my cousin.

That’s pretty cool. The closest I’ve come to having a relative play is a cousin who pitched in college. He’s lefty and come to think of it probably threw harder than zito does now (with good breaking stuff). He worked out for a few teams but wasn’t signed.
Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.

If Taschner is to have any trade value whatsoever, Bochy needs to stop using him. The Giants’ made a mistake giving him another contract, and I would give him up to anyone who would take that contract off of their hands.
Brian Sabean: continuing to monitor the CC and Manny situations
Contracts In Arbitation Years Are Not Guaranteed
If the Giants release Taschner before the 22nd (16 days before the season starts) all the would have to pay him is 30 days termination pay. If they release him later but still before the season starts all they have to pay him is 45 days termination pay.
Therefore the Giants did not make a mistake. They simply keep their options open with “Special Agent Jack”.

Hey
Ryan Howard and Chase Utley are young players!
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
Only [hella] games left until the end of Zito's contract.
..and this 10 is for the World San Francisco fans Classic.
Will Ohman: Yes please.
The article also links the Giants to Will Ohman for 1.75 million + 1 million in incentives. I would be completely in favor of this at the expense of Agent Jack.
As much as I hope they can dump Taschner for some young players, it would leave them with Affeldt and HInshaw as their only lefties, and I just can’t trust Hinshaw yet.
I’d trade Traschner to the Phillies for one famous Philly Cheesesteak from that place in South Philly.
Pat’s or Geno’s?
And if you put Cheez Whiz on it, please be aware that it’s recycled butt pee.
Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.

Phat Philly
Good cheesesteaks in the Mission.
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long
Well that is the front office the singed Ibenez to replace Burrell – in the NL! Who says the all the chances to rob widows and orphans have past Sabean by?
Here comes Captain Obvious wearing his Atomic Wedgie!
yes please
might as well include Matt Morris to Philly in a thee team deal too.

in what world is Raul Ibanez not a good player? The only bad thing about his contract is that he’s 36 and three years is too long considering other signings this offseason. The guy rakes and he’s been raking in a pitcher’s park and now he’ll be hitting in paradise. Plus he’s a lefty who hit over .300 last year against lefties. Yeah, he’s a poor defender but he’s replacing Pat Burrell in left, not Barry Bonds in his prime. I think if you want to knock the Philadelphia front office all they have to do to respond is lift their hands and flash their championship rings. Until proven otherwise, they seem to have the magic touch right now.

Burrell and Ibanez are very similar players, but Burrell is 5 years younger and a slightly better hitter. Signing Ibanez for $32M over 3 years when you could have signed Burrell for $16M over 2 years is a bad move.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
However, it’s not true that the Phillies ever had that option. Ibanez signed a month before Burrell, and at that point Burrell was still asking for big money. Burrell’s price came way down later when the market really tumbled. In fact it reminds me of when Rich Aurilia originally left the Giants. He asked them for 4 yrs 32 million, and wound up signing for 1 yr 4 million with Seattle. Rich priced himself out of SF the same way Burrell priced his way out of Philly.

True they might not have known that he’d sign for that little in the end, but even when they signed Ibanez they could have had Burrell for the same amount if not less. They also wouldn’t have had to just throw away a 1st round draft pick. As well as the fact that they could have done with the RHH given their Lefty dominated lineup.
The market tumbling did make a few moves look bad in retrospect, but the Ibanez move looked bizarre at the time.

I don’t know what Burrell was asking for, but I don’t think it could have been much more than what Ibanez got. If that’s the case, then the Phillies made a mistake by not signing Burrell. But even if that’s not the case, look at it this way:
There were three very similar players to Ibanez on the market – Pat Burrell, Adam Dunn, and Bobby Abreu. All are good hitting, terrible fielding corner OF. Dunn is a slightly better hitter than Ibanez, and is 7 years younger. Burrell is a slightly better hitter than Ibanez, and is 4 years younger. Abreu is pretty much identical to Ibanez, and is 2 years younger. Here’s what they got:
Raul Ibanez: 3 years, $10.5M per year.
Adam Dunn: 2 years, $10M per year.
Pat Burrell 2 years, $8M per year.
Bobby Abreu: 1 year, $5M per year.
The Phillies took the player who is likely to be the least productive of the four, and gave him more years and more money per year than any of the other three. Obviously the Phillies didn’t see the market tumbling the way it eventually did, and I don’t know if it’s fair to blame them for that or not, but at the end of the day, the Ibanez signing looks pretty terrible.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
Sorry stepping out like that Mark. GaintsFan & Cookyman runs it down nicely.
I
also have seen a lot of Ibanez play (I live in the North West now) and he really should not take the field in a full sized outfield. Unless his bat is on fire he gives back more than his stick creates in my opinion. He is a fun player to watch hit (though keep in mind Safe Co is to LHB what Mays Field can be to RHB) but if I get to chose between him Burrell or Dunn for equal costs he is definitely the 3rd choice in my book.
Then we add in the whole age thing. Presuming Ibanez doesn’t flame out just how likely is he to be signed by another club at the contracts end? If he has earned being a compensated free agent it seems very unlikely. The odds are better that Burrell or Dunn could post good enough number to be compensated and still get signed by another team after their current contracts.
Now watch Ibanez posts an MVP season just because I said this. But it is truly how I view things.
Here comes Captain Obvious wearing his Atomic Wedgie!
Even if “Ibenez” was singed, burn care is very good these days.
