No, not your security blanket (although it can get chilliy in Mom's basement). This is a music thread and I hope you'll /cough/ rush /cough/ to add your comments...

What do you think is the best cover version of a song you ever heard? Live or recorded, the best performance of a previously recorded song other than by the original artist-composer.

Being a fan of Louis Armstrong... I'm going to give the nod to The Ramones cover of "What A Wonderful World". Honorable mentions later in the thread.

One exception: Nico’s cover of “I’ll Keep it With Mine”

No-talent hacks Dylan and Hendrix? What about the Smokey Robinson tune Tears of a Clown being remade by such luminaries as LaToya Jackson and Phil Collins? I think though, in those cases, the clowns were singing because of LaToya and Phil.

Speaking of the Boss...

On his epic “Live 1975-1985” set, there’s a version of his own song “Fire,” which I think the Pointer Sisters recorded first in the 1970s.

a little “research” (ie Wikipedia) shows that rockabilly singer Robert Gordon recorded it, too, around the same time as the Pointer Sisters. The Sisters’ version is much better.

by timmeh on Mar 19, 2009 12:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Robert Gordon’s version better than the Pointer Sisters’ version. The song was actually written for Gordon by Springsteen who was a big fan. After it failed to launch him into stardom, the Pointer Sisters had a hit with a pop version. To me there’s no comparison. That’s a 50 styles rock song, not a pop song.

Clearly

the answer is the Kingsmen’s version of “Louie, Louie.”

Taking a virtually unknown, and thoroughly mediocre calypso semi-hit and turning it into the greatest and most recycled rock n’ roll riff ever = legendary cover status.

(2nd best is the Beatles version of "Money").

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

by Roger on Mar 19, 2009 8:40 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The Flying Lizards bashed up "Money" as well.

The Ramones released an album of covers called Acid Eaters which featured a stepped onup version of the Amboy Dukes’ Journey To The Center Of The Mind. , and many more.

Van Halen’s cover of Roy Orbison’s Oh! Pretty Woman.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts powering up Tommy James’ Crimson And Clover.

Zeppelin spun out Willie Dixon’s You Shook Me.

Hard to top Watchtower, but I like these:

Wayfaring Stranger – Neko Case. (Does that count as a cover?)
Dead Flowers – Townes van Zandt covering the Rolling Stones
Sad Songs & Waltzes – Cake covering Willie Nelson
Still in Love – Cat Power covering Hank Sr.

Bob Dylan Category: One More Cup of Coffee – The White Stripes
Lifetime Achievement Category: Led Zeppelin

What about covers where everybody tries it, but nobody gets it right?

There are a lot more covers of both of those songs, those are two of the better examples.

I find the GNR cover droney and repetitive. Plus I’m always on thin ice with Axl’s singing voice and that song just has too much of it. The White Stripes version of St. James feels tossed off even for The White Stripes.

I’m a big fan of Emm Gryner’s cover of the Clash song “Straight to Hell.” It’s unlikely folks have heard it, so I did some googling, and it looks like it can be found on last.fm.

Everyone already knows Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt, so I’ll mention his cover of “I Hung My Head,” which I love despite it originally being a Sting song.

Oh, and there’s Neko Case’s “Knock Hard.”

If we’re counting traditional songs, I’ll add Neko Case’s “John Saw The Number” and Kristin Hersh’s “Poor Ellen Smith.”

I REALLY like Wall of Voodoo’s version.

Flame me for adimitting I watch American Idol, but it was country week this week and Adam Lambert covered “Ring of Fire” that bascially gave the middle finger to everything the show stands for the middle finger.

I love this guy. He’s not making any attempt to hide the fact that he’s gay, nor is he attempting to please the judges or mainstream sensibilities. He has a background in both music and theatre and is FAR more entertaining than anyone I’ve ever seen on the show. His on-stage persona is flamboyant/outrageous and his off-stage persona is basic, nice guy. A lot of America won’t get him, but it’ll be interesting social experiment to see if America is ready for something like this.

Holy moly, I thought I was the only one. I actually like her version of “Breathless” a lot – taking a pretty cheesy pop song and turning it into something entirely different.

My favorite covers include Talking Heads’ “Take Me to the River,” Stan Ridgeway’s “Ring of Fire,” and a totally unknown Spanish electronic act called Spunky did a brilliant cover of Soft Cell’s “Loving You, Hating Me.”

I pre-ordered Goddess so mine’s all personalized and autographed. ;)

Yeah, I got mine pre-ordered too. It’s like the third album of hers I have autographed, ha. I haven’t gotten super into it yet, but I’ve only had the chance to listen a few times – I’ve bought a ridiculous amount of music lately.

I got to meet her once when I was living in Chicago and she was doing a rare show in the States – she noticed I was wearing one of her t-shirts and came over to talk after she played. She was super-nice.

Oh, and I like her version of “Breathless” too, but my favorite from that album is “Moorlough Shore.”

Boy I have alot of favorite covers

In addition to Hurt/Johnny Cash, Floyd covers, and the GNR songs above…
I have to break into categories:

Covers by bands that don’t do a whole lot of covers:
- It’s All Over Now Baby Blue – Hole (there also exists a Hole cover of “Gold Dust Woman” but from what I can tell it only appeared on the soundtrack for “The Crow II” and don’t have a copy)
- Anarchy in the U.K. – Megadeth
- Living After Midnight – The Donnas
- Boys of Summer – Ataris
- Tainted Love – by Shaded Apart (also Me First and the Gimme Gimmes)

Honorable Mention
Sheer Heart Attack – by Adrenalin OD (not a super great cover… but what a bizzare choice)

Covers by bands that do many covers:
- Lonesome Town – The Cramps
- Route 66 – The Cramps
- The Crusher – The Cramps

Ramones have many many covers (not even including their cover album below) but I think my favorite is of Johnny Thunders’ “Chinese Rocks”. I also like California Sun and Time Has Come Today.

Special Category – cover albums
- anything by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes
- the For Ladies Only album by Killdozer (American Pie and One Tin Soldier are high lights)
- Let It Be by Laibach (except the song, Let it Be)
- Plays Metallica By Four Cellos by Apocalyptica
- Acid Eaters by Ramones

Special Category- best pure cover band you can only see live:

Chidren of the Damned – tribute to Iron Maiden.

Difficult Subject (without hours of research)

Off the top of my head…

Black Magic Woman – Santana (originally done by Fleetwood Mac)

I Heard It Through the Grapevine – Marvin Gaye (originally done by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles). I’m a big Smokey Robinson fan, but Marvin just nailed it. Other great versions were done by Gladys Knight & the Pips and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Crossroads – Cream (Robert Johnson)

Got to Get You into My Life – Earth, Wind & Fire (The Beatles) – I rarely like Beatles covers, but this is an exception.

Trouble No More – The Allman Brothers Band (Muddy Waters)

And… I’m not sure if this exactly qualifies, but it’s an interesting story. Simon & Garfunkel originally recorded Sounds Of Silence as an acoustic only folk song on their first album in 1964. That album flopped, and Simon & Garfunkel split up. Unbeknownst to them, their record company overdubbed the tract with electric instruments and re-released it about a year later, where it slowly climbed the charts until it reached #1. Simon & Garfunkel reunited, and that song helped propel them to stardom.

I never realized “Black Magic Woman” was a cover. cool

Right there with you on “Got To Get You Into My Life” by Eartch Wind And Fire.

On another front, my wife and I were arguing “Say A Little Prayer” the other day. I like Dionne Warwick’s version more and she likes Aretha Franklin’s more. I’m not sure who covered who.

According to Wikipedia,

I Say a Little Prayer was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick in 1967. Aretha Franklin recorded it in 1968. I had to listen to both versions again before weighing in. I have to give my nod to the original (although both are good).

Beatles covers…yea I’m pretty much in the park that I can only get into Aerosmith’s Come Together. Other than that, I’m not sure I’ve heard one that’s good. Bono’s version was ok, but I think it was just compared to the suck that surrounded it in the movie.

I've been a Beatles fan since the mid 60s

Aerosmith’s Come Together and U2’s Helter Skelter are not bad. I don’t like them as much as the originals, or as much as Earth, Wind & Fire’s Got to Get You into My Life. Perhaps it is because I prefer that original GTGYIML to CT or HS

I guess I’m one of the few U2 fans that really liked the Rattle and Hum album. They did a pretty good cover of All Along the Watchtower on that album (though not nearly as good as Hendrix’s).

It's tough to call that a cover, exactly

Prince never released that under his own name – IIRC, it was released under the Family – so I almost think of it as an original-ish version. Like songs written by a label’s house writer but recorded by someone else – I don’t think anybody thinks of Aretha’s version of Natural Woman (written by Carole King) as a cover.

Looking it up on Wikipedia, the Family version came out 5 years before O’Connor’s. Her version is certainly the definitive one, though.

His cover of Cohen’s Avalanche is also pretty cool, though completely inferior to the original.

Scott Walker also has done a ton of great covers, especially of Jacques Brel songs – I particularly love Funeral Tango, Sons of, If You Go Away, Amsterdam and Jackie. His cover of Tim Hardin’s “Black Sheep Boy” is great as well. And his version of Dylan’s If I Threw It All Away is beautiful.

    Speaking of "Proud Mary"

It was written by John Fogerty, and recorded by CCR. It reached #2 on the charts in 1969. It was covered by Ike & Tina Turner two years later (their version made it to #4). Both are great versions.

I wonder if there is another song that has a higher combined rating (between original and cover)?

“Oh, Pretty Woman” was a #1 for Roy Orbison on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964, and the Van Halen cover was #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks 100 in 1982 (although reaching only #12 on the Billboard Hot 100).

Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.

Glady Knight and the Pips version of “I Heard it Thru the Grapevine” (which was the third or fourth version recorded) reached #2 on the Pop Charts and became Motown’s biggest selling single up to that point (1968). The next year Marvin Gaye’s version (which had actually been recorded before Gladys but released after it) hit #1 on the charts and IT became Motown’s biggest selling single ever.

The following year, CCR’s 11 minute version helped “Cosmo’s Factory” hit the Top 10 of the Soul Album chart, which was a virtually unprecedented accomplishment for a white rock band.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

    More

Patti Smith doing Gloria was mentioned above, and since covers where lyrics are drastically rewritten are apparently fair game, I’ve always loved The Pogues doing Young Ned Of The Hill (“A curse upon you Oliver Cromwell, you who raped our motherland, I hope you’re rottin’ down in hell for the horrors that you sent”)

And while I’m on the topic of the Pogues, And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda is amazing.

My favorites were mentioned already, RBF’s “Take on Me” and Sid Vicious’ “My Way.” I also really like The Damned’s cover of the Beatles classic, “Help.” The Jam do a great version of “Slow Down” as well. A good recent cover is My Chemical Romance’s cover of Dylan’s “Desolation Row,” which was used in movie “Watchmen.”

The best two covers I can think of off of (off of off of…) top of my head are The Clash’s cover of Junior Murvin’s “Police and Thieves” and the same group’s cover of Toots and the Maytal’s “Pressure Drop.”

This is only because very few people cover Richard and Linda Thompson, however.
