Rob Bowen? Why? Steve Holm!

Alright, breaking news here it looks like.  The A's released their backup catcher Rob Bowen, and the Giants are hot on his tail.  I wouldn't really believe the rumor since we seem to be pretty set with Molina as the starter, Holm as the backup as he was for much of last year, and Sandoval as the backup for long term injury (hopefully), but it is The Bagger.

Why would we be hot on his tail?  I'm not sure I follow this line of reasoning.  The man has a lifetime .639 OPS.  He was apparently worth nothing in the field.  So basically, he's a below average hitter and an average fielder.  I'm not quite sure how Holm couldn't match that.

I think Holm's a bit overlooked as well.  Last year he had a .762 OPS in limited ABs, and while I know he will not be that good, he can be a solid backup.  There aren't any new-fangled back door man stats out for him, but to look at an old stat he had no errors in the same amount of innings as 23 full games last year.  So I'd say he can be at least average behind the plate, as I wasn't able to fully pay attention to any games last season really.  But I think he's capable of at least something behind the plate.  Yes, he put up good numbers the past couple years as a pretty old player for his league, but he also had a good year at San Jose when he was 24 (a year older than average for the league) and then was inexplicably sent down.  (Although I guess Christopher Curry (who?) and Eliezer Alfonzo needed AA at-bats and the duo of Guillermo Rodriguez and Eliezer Alfonzo needed A+ at-bats.)

So open Rob Bowen yes/no or Steve Holm yes/no thread.
