Spring Training Giants Trivia Challenge!!!~!

I did one of these fanposts a couple of months ago, but I'm enough of a nerd (and there's still three weeks left until the start of actual season, geez) to do another one. So! Giants trivia. Answer, or ask your own questions. Fun!

1) Who is the only Giants pitcher to ever strike out the side on only 9 pitches?

2) The Giants have never had the #1 draft pick, but they once had the #2 pick and twice had the #3 pick. Who did they draft with those picks?

3) Speaking of the draft, who was the first man ever drafted by the Giants?

4) In 2008, Conor Gillaspie was the first player from his draft class to make the majors. Who was the last Giant to make it to the majors first among his draft class?

5) Most of us probably know that Robb Nen and Rod Beck are #1 and #2 on the Giants' all-time saves list, but who is #3?

6) Armando Benitez Memorial Question: who holds the team record for most balks with 24?

7) Name the other six players involved in the Kevin Mitchell trade.

8) In the 1990s, the Giants had 9 players named Mark. How many can you name?

9) Who got the first regular season hit ever at (then) Pac Bell Park?

10) Who were Giants pitchers of record in the last three games at Candlestick Park? Who was the last Giants pitcher to get a save at Candlestick?

on the Mitchell trade: we sent Chris Brown, two pitchers named Mark—Grant who now broadcasts in SD and Mark Davis; also Keith Comstock
We got the Kevin, also…Craig Lefferts and Dave Dravecky
and later Kevin netted us Billy Swift and others

Yeah, that trade was MItchell & Mike Remlinger for Swift, Burba, and Mike Jackson, who was awesome before he was hurt.

Kevin Elster? I have no real idea

by fwoty oz on Mar 18, 2009 2:46 PM PDT reply actions

Correct on all but Kevin Elster. Elster’s contribution to PBP lore was that he got a splash hit in the first exhibition game played there.

I admit to cheating on the Gary Lavelle and Kevin Mitchell questions.

Err, it was the first real game when Elster went nuts. I was misremembering that bit.

And I just realized my answer to #9 is wrong – I was thinking of the first interleague hit. That guy wasn’t even on the Giants in 2000. Now I have to do some research.

ya I’m googling the heck out of it but I can’t find it. I think the date was April 11th, 2000, tho.

It was his only career save, actually.

Also one of Grant’s favorite obscure Giants, seemingly.

One thing is for sure, I didn’t google.

Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

Correct on #2 (the two you listed) and #7 (the four you listed)

#7, I realize now, was ambiguous. I meant the trade that brought Mitchell to San Francisco. The one that sent him to Seattle only involved five players, not seven.

Oh, so when people say SD traded Mitchell away for crap, they mean it literally?

1. Depends on what you mean too. Tyler Walker did it on 9 pitches, but had more pitches in the inning.

5. Greg Minton?

9. I know Bill Mueller got the first Giants hit.

Some bad guesses

1) If not Tyler Walker, no clue

2) Grilli the #3, not old enough to know the others… were Clark and Williams drafted that early?

3) Old guy

4) Correia

5) Don’t remember anyone before Beck. Lavelle? Minton?

6) I saw someone guessed Hammaker… Seems to me that Estes had his share of balks.

7) I only remember the one where Mitchell went away with Burba, Swift, and Mike Jackson

8) Carreon, Gardner, Thurmond, Portugal, Leiter, Leonard?

9) Uhhh

10) Ahh

Answers

I’ve lost track of which have been answered correctly, so I’ll just answer every question.

1) The way I worded it, Tyler Walker is correct. He wasn’t who I was looking for, though – I meant a pitcher who started an inning and ended it with 3 strike outs in only 9 pitches. Tyler Walker struck out 3 with 9, but he did it after the bases had already been (I think) loaded. Anyway, the answer I was looking for was Trevor Wilson.

2) The #2 pick was Will Clark in 1985. The #3 picks were Matt Williams in 1986 and….actually, I managed to mess this one up, too. I thought Jason Grilli was a #3 pick in 1997, but he was actually #4.

3) Al Gallagher

4) Kevin Correia

5) Gary Lavelle

6) Atlee Hammaker

7) Dave Dravecky, Craig Lefferts, Mark Grant, Mark Davis, Chris Brown, Keith Comstock

8) Mark Lewis, Mark Carreon, Mark Gardner, Mark Leiter, Mark Leonard, Mark Bailey, Mark Thurmond, Mark Dewey. In the current decade, there have been just two Giants named Mark – Mark Gardner and Mark Sweeney.

9) Devon White got the first hit in the first at bat at the park.

10) Livan Hernandez won; Shawn Estes and Joe Nathan lost. MCC legend Bronswell Patrick got the last save, the only one of his career. It was also the last time he ever pitched in the majors.

Correction: Bronswell Patrick pitched an addition 2/3 of an inning in the final series in Colorado. I forgot those games at Candlestick weren’t quite the end of the season.
