Sadaharu Oh vs. Hank Aaron

Home run derby before an exhibition game at Korakuen Stadium in 1974.

Found this while looking for Yu Darvish vids.

I’d kind of forgotten how different Oh’s swing is from most US players (I guess thats true for most Japanese players?)
Around 0:25-0:26 it looks like he’s kind of falling or collapsing in on his front leg. Doesn’t look like that ball should have left the yard to me.

Oh had that flamingo stance. Then his legs would cross.

The Hammer looked like he efficiently used his upper body.

In Oh’s autobiography he talks about how he wasn’t an effective hitter until he developed the flamingo stance.

Also I think it’s funny how they raise a big stink about non-Japanese players approaching or breaking the single season home run record in NPB, when Oh set the record himself. Oh being half Chinese, which was not a good thing for him in his playing days.

Ah the Darth Vadar Syndrome. No Ally is as beloved as one that used to scare the crap out of you. Jim Butcher is fun reading.

That brought to mind Ichiro’s Happy Gilmore swing.

With the homerun record, it was defitely a pride thing even if Oh was half Japanese.

I definitely will have to pick up Oh’s autobiography.

It’s really good. I think I have my copy around somewhere. If you promise to get it back to me at some point I can loan it to you.

Oh sad is this. When I first saw the pic I was trying to tell if it was the old Montréal Olympic stadium.
