Who Do You Root For?
Who do you root for in today's WBC Game between the US and Puerto Rico? Jonathan Sanchez will be the starter for Puerto Rico. Personally I am rooting for "Dirty" and his relievers to shutout and eliminate the US.

I feel like a curmudgeon, but I haven’t watched any of the WBC games. I’m interested in seeing Yu Darvish pitch, but that’s about it.
I guess I hope USA wins.

The WBC is a great idea for baseball, in general, but lousy for the MLB in particular because of the timing.
That said, I wholeheartedly support Jonathan Sanchez in his quest to show the Giants just how badly they screwed with him in 2007.

Screwed him? I hardly knew him?
Hard to say a player got screwed when his overall ERA was 5.88 and even split was not so good:
Home: 6.21
Road: 5.30
Apr: 5.40
May: 5.68
Jun: 1.74
Jul: 6.75
Aug: 10.12
Sep: 7.16
Starter: 7.16
Relief: 5.30
So where exactly was he screwed? He got paid $350,000K or so, plus per diem, enjoyed major league life, and his numbers don’t exactly scream “hey, I should be treated better”.

What? They moved a highly regarded pitching prospect from the bullpen to the rotation like 7 times in one season, but you don’t think they screwed with him, because of his…home/road split?

I voted for the comeback against the puerto rico bullpen. That would also get sanchez back to camp, which is probably a good thing anyway (although it would be cool to see him keep pitching there).

I want Jonathan to do well. In a perfect world, he’d pitch five strong innings, then give way to the bullpen, and they proceed to blow it so USA wins.
Almost all my teams are out. Mexico was bounced last night, Nederland couldn’t keep the magic going, South Africa is long gone, so it’s just USA and Japan for me.

The Master Plan
— Dirty goes 5 strong, gets W
(proves to everyone he’s a winner, increases confidence, win lust for season)
— USA eliminated this year
(embarrassed, next team will be vastly improved, managed competitively, ie no vanity appearances, better players more willing to step up)
— WBC reformatted like World Cup/Euro Cup
(games/rounds spread out through year, 2 year (intermittent) regional tourney qualifiers?, USA East/West teams?, mid-season/all-star break games so pitchers not on auto pitch counts?)
— Bud Selig chokes on own vomit
(why not?)

Ideally
Dirty throws 5 no-hit innings with 16 Ks. The only baserunner he allows is on an SO E2 on a slider in the dirt. Then USA rocks the pen and wins easily.

America
I don’t see how Sanchez reflects on the Giants unless he’s pitching in a Giants uni. Just get him back to camp, and hopefully the U.S. wins. If Sanchez does well, that adds up to pitches he doesn’t need to throw.
Here’s hoping he gets knocked out early, then wins the Cy Young for us.

With the training staff who knows him? And less stress pitching?

by giants9107 on Mar 17, 2009 3:40 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't have strong feelings either way.
Meaningless innings for us or meaningless innings for his country. I think I’d rather him pitch in the WBC in a competative environment.
As far as another staff goes. I don’t know. When a pitcher plays in a winter league I don’t really have a problem with him being under another staff. He may even learn a few things with these guys that he wouldn’t from Rags & Co.
by chilibean_3 on Mar 17, 2009 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would rather have him prepare for the MLB season in a normal fashion
rather than forcing him to pitch in games that “COUNT” in early and mid March. I don’t see how this is even really a debatable point, if you think he should participate because you think this WBC is important then that is one thing, but having a pitcher’s preparation routine disturbed is unquestionably a bad thing for the pitcher.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Mar 17, 2009 4:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Didn’t he start preparing to pitch in the WBC pretty early in the year? I don’t really know what makes an increasing pitch count in the WBC different from and increasing pitch count in spring training. What is he doing now that he would be doing differently if he was with the Giants?
Like I said, I don’t have strong feelings in the argument, I’d just like to understand this complaint better.
by chilibean_3 on Mar 17, 2009 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
My main problem with the whole thing is that if he was with the Giants he would pitch in a fashion that they controlled, probably every 5th day gradually building his pitch count from something like 25 to 100 in a very relaxed Spring Training environment. With the Puerto Rican team he threw 56 pitches last Wednesday and the around 60 today in an environment that could not be more different than Spring Training. To you and I these games might be just as meaningless as a Spring Training game, but when you are pitching at a Major League park with a crowd of 30,000 (versus about 5,000 at a Spring Training park) in a game that is televised all of the world and is (at least in his mind) “pitching for his country” that is totally different than the gradual preparation of Spring Training. All of this wouldn’t worry me so much if Sanchez didn’t have such a history of fragility. To dismiss it as “pitching is pitching” is pretty silly.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Mar 17, 2009 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe a game like this can toughen the guy up a little. Like wilriv said in the gameday thread, the mental part of his game was very lacking, and if he can get that out of the way now before the season starts, it can really help him during the season. I don’t see what’s wrong with actually getting accustomed to competitive baseball before the season starts.
But if you’re worried that playing in a competitive game might ruin his mindset, i think it’s time to give up on Sanchez, because he’s obviously not tough enough to be in the Major Leagues. That’s silly.
by cheno on Mar 17, 2009 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not worried at all about anybody’s “mindset” I’m worried about his “physicalset” or whatever is the physical equivalent of a “mindset.” I’m worried that the different environment causes him to approach it differently which effects him physically. Would you think it a good idea if a guy pitched a couple weeks or Spring Training then pitched 2 major league games then pitched a couple of week’s of Spring Training? (I guess you would probably say “ah, pitching is pitching”) That is essentially what Sanchez is being asked to do.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Mar 17, 2009 6:23 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
There is no difference. This isn’t pitching or football. You don’t need to work with your teammates in order to gel. And it’s not like there’s a new catcher to get acquainted with. Pitching is pitching.

Even though we (Americans) may not be at the height of our popularity with the rest of the world, it is still OK to take immense pride in the achievements of our countrymen as they compete against others who, coincidentally, take pride in representing their country, without being racked by guilt. Furthermore, we don’t have to provide disclosure for taking pride in America with anything other than, “Because I’m an American.”
