"Cuts" today: Gillapsie, Whiteside, Sosa, English
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/extrabaggs/2009/03/16/lincecum-home-sick-wont-pitch-today/
Also, Wald and Downs will go down at the end of the day.
Truly shocking developments, all.

I like it that Rohlinger is sticking around
But why is Sadler this there? Taschner? I guess you can delay those decisions until latter. Probably after today’s bullpen game!
by pittsburghian on Mar 16, 2009 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions
Taschner is going to make the 25-man roster. If he weren’t, the Giants would have released him already. Jack has enough veterany goodness to get the Roberts “get lost and hook up with another team” early release.

Cuts also covered here: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090316&content_id=3998172&vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf
Only it says the Wald and Downs have already happened.
"The Giants also announced six roster moves, trimming their Spring Training contingent to 44. Left-hander Jesse English, right-hander Henry Sosa and third baseman Conor Gillaspie were optioned to Minor League camp and catcher Eli Whiteside, infielder/outfielder Matt Downs and infielder Jake Wald were reassigned to Minor League camp. "
And the first time I glanced at the lineup, I thought it said Iron Chef.

1) Mike Ivie
2) wilriv

6) Marvin Benard

Scott’s gonna be pissed he didn’t make your list.
They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long
If I expanded it to 20, he’d get on there, right after Dax Jones but before Glenn Dickey.

There is a lot to like there (for D)..
Defensively, that’s a better than average lineup — except for Velez. No punch there.

Aurilia’s been a favorite of mine since 1995, but yeah, please, no.

I think he is a favorite of everyone here… still
by lincysgiants on Mar 16, 2009 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions
Which reminds me, tangentially, that Aurilia and Marvin Benard both came up at the same time at the end of the 1995 season and they both set the world on fire. Aurilia had 19 at bats while Benard had 34. Their respective lines:
Aurilia: .474 / .476 / .947 / 2 HR
Benard: . 382 / .400 / .529 / 1 HR
It was, of course, a terribly small sample size, but as bad as the Giants were in 1995, it was really exciting at the time. Sort of like Bowkermania in early 2008.

The Angels mlb.com page says you can listen to Gameday Audio for free today, but it doesn’t seem to be working for me.
Anyone else getting it right? Or is it too early for it to work?
WOW
Angels announcers are fucking terrible
Were GMJ, Juan Pierre, and Dave Roberts all available in the same offseason?
Because if so, I’m glad we gave out the least bad contract.

Listen for free by clicking KLAA. Yes these announcers do blow.
I heard a rumor that when Billy Sadler autographs baseballs he adds a little “John 3:16” to the bottom of his autograph.
Does anybody know if this is true?…is it a load of crap?
I’d ask him to put a frowny face on it.

When are we allowed to start freaking out about the Affeldt signing? I appreciate that it’s spring training, but I’m starting to worry about what I’m seeing.
I’m not worried. ST stats are meaningless (unless they are Zito stats then they just freak me out even more)
I agree spring training stats are meaningless, but the better teams usually still win more games… that must mean something
by lincysgiants on Mar 16, 2009 1:23 PM PDT up reply actions
Nah, didn’t the Giants lead the ST in wins in like ’05 or ’06? I know one year they had an awesome record and they were terrible.
Okay, but remember when Barry Zito had shitty spring trainings, and shitty years…

Does this mean Ryan Rohlinger isn’t going to hit 60 HR’s this year?

Funny story
back in the day a cousin and I would attend Giants/Dodgers game in LA and sit in the bleachers. Beer at the yard is almost the price of gold so my cousin decides he wants to beat the system and loads himself up with cans of beer. One in this leg, another in that leg. One in the right arm, one down the sleeve of the left arm. One in his back another in his waist. The brother is set.
We get in and sit down. He “pops” the first beer and fans sitting near us can hear. By the fifth inning he is down to two beers.
You must be listening to Rex “The Wonder Dog” Hudler. I have always wondered how he keeps a job in broadcasting.
