9 third basemen on the field

At one point we thought there was no third baseman.  Now, we could field a whole lineup card with guys in camp now:  Sandoval catches.

On the infield, left to right--aurilia, Frandsen, Gillaspie (talk from scouts is, he should try second), McClain (was a 3B when he joined G's in 2007, played there lots last year)

Outfield--Guzman, Velez, Rohlinger (learning to be a utlity guy)

Pitching--Matt Downs--who has backed up all infield positions, and pitched some for the U of Alabama.    DHing and backing up could be former third basemen like Randy Winn and Scheierholz.   Are some of us going batty with this loooong winter and spring?   Obviously.

Derived from the tendency of many fans to compare any hitter to Pedro Feliz.

Somehow I have a feeling, this might not be the last time we see this picture.

I never understand why the Giants seem to try to turn every prospect into a utility man. Obviously, versatility is good, but some players are not meant to play every position. Perhaps they just don’t believe any of them can hit well enough to play every day?

McClain moved back to third after TI arrived in Fresno. I saw him play at third in a game in late August and he did pretty well.

Needs more center fielders

We solve every problem by adding center fielders.

an all center fielder lineup was another project I was considering. Scary how these great ideas surface in multiple locations.

Hmmm

I think we opted to kind of fling everything at the wall and see what sticks for 1 year. I expect us to be in the running for Beltre at the trade deadline if in contention and in the hunt for him as a FA. From what I see Beltre will be one of the better all around players in the pool next year and that is not a good situation with his agent. But enough about Pedro Feliz.

I wanted to comment on the incessant “move x to 2b” I keep hearing scouts and others say. Yes, 2B is the one of the easier positions for those that aren’t power hitters, It doesnt mean we should move all of our defensively average position players over to 2B so that they own it. I take that as saying “hey you could move to college but honestly in order to keep your grades high you might want to stay in high school for another 4 years.”

Buriss is a decent SS and im sure he would be a great 2B, but who the hell takes SS. Gillaspie is a decent 3B but he could make a great 2B as well, but keep him at 3B until he absolutely proves otherwise and velezes the situation.

Holy Crap!

This (or something) just hit me…is your blogname a reference to what Brett Butler said about SFafter he signed with L.A.?

OK if I adopt Randy Johnson?

you're cheating

Velez isn’t a 3B.

Of course, it’s still unclear what, if any, position he is capable of fielding.

Cut Velez. Insert Schierholtz. Frandsen can also play outfield and Jose Uribe takes the infield spot. Fun thread. I daydream weird teams like this from time to time as well. Speaking of which, the Cuban closer that pitched against Japan yesterday in the WBC made my all-Pedro team.

cheating, no way

Velez played some 3B this spring.
and, the 2004 roster of the Auburn Doubledays of the NY-Penn league lists Eugenio as a 3B-SS. I think Connecticut tried him there too.
Somehow I kept forgetting Uribe when I worked on this, the volume of 3B options has me swamped
