Barry won't be a Twin (duh)
Should we expect 30 stories about each team that passes on Bonds?
As much as I would have liked to see Barry play one more season, I'm not sure I want to see 44 year old Barry try to strap on the elbow armor at this point.

I’d like to see Barry for one more season on a team other than the Giants (or Dodgers).

I’d be down for some Barry. I even liked watching Moises Alou fail in his pinch hit appearances with the Dominican Republic.

BLB as the DH for the USA in the WBC
That would have been cool

how are these players selected, anyway?
i have no words for how excited it would make me to see Barry winnings games for the US of A, essentially sticking his middle finger to Bud Selig. I’d be surprised if they let him play, though.

That might be kinda cool. But yeah, they won’t let him play.

what about his effect on team chemistry? The steroids media hoopla? The recliner chair in the locker room? How could we win with all those distractions?

This might be a time to revive that professional league for players that are over 40. I would rather watch Barry and Moises hit than most of the present day players.

well, the optimism of the early part of spring training will make it impossible for him to sign with anyone at this specific point in time.
i betcha a few games in when someone has serious outfield/ dh/ injury/ whatever problems that he will get at least a tertiary look from someone.

I dunno – didn’t happen last year. Now he’s a year older and a year more removed from the last time he played. Do you really think he could come in and produce? I’d like to think he could, but I can’t really believe it.

The Projection Systems Seem To Think He Would Indeed Produce

Okay, so maybe he could hit just a little bit. But is that kind of production what you want for your DH, or would it compensate for a statue in the outfield? Not sure.

The Worst wOBA Prediction For Bonds Is Better Then All But 2 Of Last Year's AL DHs With 200 Or More PAs
Only Milton Bradley and Aubrey Huff were better.
http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=dh&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=200&type=1&season=2008&month=0
Texas doesn’t have Bradley anymore and Huff is going to play 1B in 2009.
A reasonable arguement could be made that the RedSox (Ortiz), Angels (Guerrero), A’s (Cust), WhiteSox (Thome), and Rays (Burrell) wouldn’t improve by signing Barry but the other 10 AL teams have no such excuse. Collusion is the only reason he will not be signed.

Bonds would take him deep…

Aren’t we still paying Bonds anyways? Tell him we’ll give him league minimum in addition to his back loaded stuff.

Bonds makes no sense for the Giants, but for an AL team he would make alot of sense as the DH. Any team that lacks offense and doesn’t consider him is flat out stupid. Either that or he IS being blackballed and should consider a law suit.

Contrary to popular notions, if all however many AL teams there are [it’s not real baseball anyhow] independently come to the conclusion he’s not worth the hassle, that is not illegal.
Fred Lewis can stand under my umbrella.

If teams that lack offense and don’t consider Bonds are stupid, and…
Since the Giants lack offense…
How does Bonds “make no sense for the Giants?”
by Sabertooth on Mar 14, 2009 7:43 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The Giants Are Still Rebuilding And Do Not Have The DH Postition To Offer
Signing Barry Bonds benches Fred Lewis. Lewis is part of the future (part of the rebuild) Bonds is the past. The only way signing Barry makes sense for the Giants is if they have a trade lined up that ships Randy Winn out for a decent prospect. Then signing Barry (with Schierholtz and Velez to back him up) and moving Fred to RF would make some sense. But, this takes a trade partner with an outfield hole that is willing to take Winn’s dollars and give up a decent prospect. Randy’s likely peerformance is worth this but in today’s economic climate who has the budget left to do this?

Nahhh...
The Giants play 162 games with 3 outfielders. There are 486 outfield starts in a season.
The Giants also play 3 games in Seattle and 3 games in Oakland this year, for another 6 DH starts.
So, there are 492 starts available to Bonds and the other three outfielders.
Figure Bonds for about 115 to 125 games. 6 as DH and another 20 as a pinch hitter. That puts him at about 90 to 100 outfield starts, leaving about 400 outfield starts for Winn, Rowand, and Lewis. That’s about 135 apiece, which would be good for Rowand and light for Winn. But also figure 10 to 20 games where Bonds comes out early and Lewis finishes the game. I don’t see how in this scenario Lewis doesn’t get plenty of playing time, easily over 140 games.

This Leaves Zero Playing Time For Schierholtz
Who like Lewis is the future. Bottom line, no room for Barry without trading Winn.
