Latin prospects lie about their age

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Actually, This Bad Habit Seems To Be Very Much Limited To The The Dominican Republic.

I have not heard of this problem with players from other “latin” countries.

I thought they cracked down on falsified documents after 9/11

Your homeland security tax dollars at work.

Seriously, though. Last time this happened, most of the cases involved players filling out the date incorrectly (it goes DD/MM/YY pretty much everywhere except America, an obvious source of confusion)

It’s just shorthand for the way we would say it outloud:

“June 18th 1977” = 06/18/1977

I won’t argue that the way we say it outloud makes a lot of sense though.

We're all basically Pedro Feliz.

Now I’m wondering if we say it that way because of how we write it.

by SF Pete on Mar 12, 2009 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

This way makes no sense anyway. If I’m writing a date, typically I’ll go 09/3/12. Puts everything in a perfectly chronological order.

And They Are Both Dominician

Cuba is the only other county this seems to in practice. You don’t hear about it from Mexico, Venezuala, Columbia, Panama, Porto Rico, any of the teritorial islands of the Netherlands. It seems to be mainly Dominicians with a few Cuban defectors.

Bottom line, calling it a “latin problem” is a false sterotype bordering on racist.

by giantsrainman on Mar 12, 2009 12:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

“Porto Rico” isn’t a country, it’s a US territory, and its residents are US citizens.

Also, Columbia is a university in uptown Manhattan. The country is called Colombia.

And while I’m not well versed on the subject, I don’t think people from the Netherlands Antilles can really be considered Latin/Latino/Hispanic. The term refers to Spanish (and sometimes Portugese) speaking cultures.

by jcb9 on Mar 12, 2009 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nah

I don’t see any racism in it. It’s not a problem for Mexican prospects/players because the ones I can think of making an impact in baseball right now have spent significant time in the US or were even born here. Adrian Gonzalez was born in San Diego, Yovani Gallardo attended high school in Texas. Jorge Cantu (hey he was good once) was born in Texas. It’s easy for them to get their stuff straightened out.

It’s not to say that all Dominicans falsify information, either. Since their numbers are so great in MLB, there’s a larger number of odds to play here. When you compare the talent pool of Dominicans vs. all the other nations you named, DR outnumbers them all on its own. What’s to say that Colombians or Nicaraguans didn’t or don’t falsify their documents? They just haven’t been caught, if they did do it. And I’m sure if Cuba ever opened thier doors up and let the prospects come over here, they’d rival DR’s numbers in the league. And the odds of falsifying info go up.

I’m not worried about either of them.

And I don’t suggest worrying about any major bonus baby of recent. For quite some time now, interested parties have researched these things quite carefully. But this only goes for the ‘major’ bonus babies, and one should still expect some lying about age among the unheralded.

Not that there isn’t skimming going on with other teams, but nothing that brazen. 1.4M was at least twice what he was worth, according to those in the know, and at the time.

that entire Nationals situation was all messed up

The team paid Jose Rijo, one of it’s employees for the use of his academy and he used the academy as way of getting close to the kids and their buscones so he could skim from the bonuses he advised Nationals to pay them
