Marvin Benard was the greatest CF I’ve ever seen!

You need to get out more.

Adoptive father to the All-Father. Does that make me the All-Grandfather?

xanthan only had the luxury of a digital eye for a few weeks years ago before he officially lost his privileges for conduct unbecoming of a STATS computer. There’s a distinct possibility that Marvin Benard is the only CF he’s ever seen.

I assume that single tear was coming out of your single, now defunct, non-functional digital eye.

So Oscar is not chosen in a similar way to Rookie of the Year, Cy Young and MVP awards? I am so glad there is nothing circular about that argument.

You know you could have warned me it was a Simmons article.

This.

"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

I have no idea what his point was and I have no interest in re-reading it to find out.

I read the thread comments before accidentally giving stuff I don’t like my traffic.

In this case, yours was the first comment that let me know what I was in for. So the strategy wouldn’t have been a perfect fit for somebody like you.

Worked great for me, though.

I kind of feel silly for enjoying this article considering it was a Bill SImmons piece and it blatantly shoves aside the notion that stats carry any weight. But for whatever reason, I came away from it feeling a bit nostalgic from the time when I looked at baseball as such an amazing spectacle.

I realize I’m kind of preaching to the wrong choir because of the amazing stats analysis that goes on around these parts, but there is certainly something to be said for recognizing greatness like I did when I was little.

Anyways, Bill Simmons is awful for the most part for his east coast bias and incredible ignorance on many subjects, but the line about Barry brought about some emotion for me, and I’d thought I share it for kicks.

On the run from Johnny Law, aint no trip to Cleveland, or San Francisco.

I really like Simmons, I read his stuff and listen to his podcasts all the time. He’s not an anti-stats guy at all. This isn’t his best article but I believe the point he’s trying to make is that people don’t need to be so concerned with how steroids “ruined baseball.”

You often hear people say that steroids are such a problem in baseball, as opposed to football, because of how sacred the various records are and how inflated steroid numbers make it difficult to compare players from different eras. Most of us around here know that you need put all players in the context of the era they played in. So I think Simmons’ real beef is not with STATS, but rather with people complaining about steroids.

Simmons basketball stuff is usually very good

This piece in particular regarding the league’s monetary viability was a must read, though maybe a bit too doomsday-y.

Can't get enough of the Oakland A's? Visit Oaktown Awesomer's. For further statistical analysis, Beyond the Box Score.

Yeah

I like Simmons. He’s decently funny.

He mostly gets it with stats, but he doesn’t enjoy being shouted down by a million statistical hobgoblins every time he expresses an opinion about a player. I get that.

And his NBA stuff is usually very good.

I'm spent, just can't rosterbate anymore.
