Sandoval Swing Plot!
Really cool stuff from BtB's Graham Goldbeck.

Needs moar contact indication. We all know Pablo is hacky. I think everyone’s argument is that his contact on pitches out of the zone is better than average.

I think you can draw that conclusion from that plot already- he mentions that Sandoval’s contact rate is 79.4% for those pitches out of the strike zone vs. Johnson’s 71%. That means that even though Sandoval’s effective strike zone (or “swing zone”) is huge, he’s still making contact on those balls at a greater rate than Johnson, who has a teeny “swing zone”. So, yeah- Sandoval is really really good at making contact on pitches outside of the strike zone.
Yeah, I read the 79% part. What I was looking for was a plot of those pitches in which he actually made contact; not just the pitches in which he swung the bat. Basically, an idea of where out of the strikezone he is more likely to make contact.

I will post a more concrete plot later tonight
In fact, I’m thinking about doing a full article on Pablo just because he’s so much of an outlier, which is awesome.

Too tired tonight, sorry :(
But expect it to me made up for (and then some) tomorrow!

I’m not too surprised. It’s not uncommon to see guys swing at breaking balls in the dirt.

this is a lot more valuable than Russell Martin’s swing plot

Does “hoping for” count?

Well at least on the outside and top of the strike zone he’s staying quite near the strike zone. He goes down on low pitches, but then again you can get some drives on golfing the ball. I’m guessing those ones really low and in are breaking pitches which he still managed to adapt his swing and make contact with.
