Baggs on Uribe
"Juan Uribe has impressed me thus far. He really seems to have a plan in batting practice, going to right field and then working his way to pulling the ball. Seems to control his bat very well. He hit an impressive double, but was thrown out trying for a triple."
This sounds disturbingly similar to Jose Castillo news from last year. "have a plan" "going to right field" "impressive double" "thrown out".

We wouldn’t have hated Castillo nearly as much if he could have played shortstop and served only in a backup role.
Yup. I didn’t like Castillo, but it was mostly because he got almost 400 at-bats with the Giants. All things considered, Uribe has at least been a useful player in his big league career and he can play shortstop in a pinch. I don’t think he’ll get anywhere near the amount of at-bats that Castillo was given.
I guarantee you Bochy will find those AB’s for him.

Random prediction: by midseason, we’re all going to wish we’d kept Ivan Ochoa instead of bringing in Uribe.
if the Giants decide they really want Ochoa I’m sure they can pull him out of Pawtucket in a few months

No, if we aren’t going with Renteria we should have just gone with Burriss at SS. Uribe can neither hit nor field enough to merit a big league job anymore.
I'm spent, just can't rosterbate anymore.
Perhaps.
But they had to bring someone in. Even if the Giants had gone with Burriss, they had no legitimate backup SS, nor insurance against Sandoval embarrassing himself at 3B. There’d have been a very real possibility that the team would be forced into fielding Frandsen at 3rd, Burriss at SS, and Velez at 2B, with god knows who backing them up. Since, I’m personally of the opinion than none of those three will shake out as more than good reserve infielders, I don’t find that situation particularly attractive in either the short or long run.

This only makes sense if you have something to spend that $18 million on. Is the difference between, say, Pat Burrell/Adam Dunn and Travis Ishikawa greater than the difference between Renteria and Uribe? I doubt it, and I don’t even like Renteria.
We have money now, so we must spend it now, even if there isn’t really anyone worth spending it on? That’s the kind of thinking that got us Zito. Besides, to use Sabean’s recent argument, there might be teams forced to sell high-salaried players for peanuts at the deadline.
I’m not a big fan of Uribe, BTW, I just have a very easy time seeing Renteria being completely and utterly done.

I might be more optimistic about Renteria and do not see him completely and utterly done.

Edgar Renteria
That $18MM was a big overpay. Teams might have been on him at 2yr/$12MM but that is $6MM that could have been spent elsewhere – free agency, player development, draft bonus international player signing or midseason transaction pickup of a talented player who becomes too costly to his team,
Like it or not, that’s how teams manage their budgets. A GM who refrains from spending $18 million one year doesn’t get an $18 million credit for impulse purchases down the road. And you take a certain hit in ticket sales etc. with every scrub you put on the field.
Renteria might well be completely and utterly done, but he might also rebound to being the above-average shortstop that he has been for most of his career. It’s not what I would have done, but there’s some upside to signing him.
Renteria, Burell & Dunn are all projected to be worth around the same next year (2.5 wins) so the only way that’d be better would be if Ishikawa is worse than Uribe. Given than Uribe is basically a replacement level player these days, i think Ishikawa should be able to outperform him.

I don’t see how Uribe has any revelence to that equation as he’s worthless as a a player. So as Uribe=0, you’re basically saying we shouldn’t have signing Renteria. Which i disagree with, but that’s fair enough, although it doesn’t detract from the fact that you may as well take Uribe out of the equation together.
