I’m hoping someone in the Giants FO can talk Richie into retiring before the end of Spring Training. That would be the best of all worlds.

My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.

Win-win

Minor league deal. He’ll have to produce to make the team. Even though it’s Bochy we’re talking about, he’d have to bump someone off the 40-man to make the team, so he’s no lock.

If he has a poor Spring, Ihe can retire a Giant.

Which leads to a different topic for me. Of the late 90’s – early ought clubs who do we think are enough of a Good Giants ™ to merit the wall?

Bonds is a no doubt.

Aurilia should be there in my mind considering not just his career but who the Giants traded to get him links him to the ’92 squad.

Ray- I would not complain about too much (not a small thing from me) though I personally would not advocate him.

JT – A fan favorite but also kind of a symbol of our problems as well. I could take or leave it though.

Feliz- Also symbolic of what didn’t work in that period. But I never saw him not do what the team asked or sulk. I might be a lone here but I would be favorable to his name eventually being there.

Kent ? – I would be more inclined to naming a car wash after him but maybe I am being too grumpy.

Anyone else I am missing?

Jason Schmidt deserves a place despite signing with the Dodgers later on. Same for Bill Mueller.

Burks is interesting. It 2+ seasons here long enough though?

Mueller though was not considered important enough to keep once he neared free agency. And unlike Aurilia he never had a return engagement of any note.

Schmidt gets huge negative points for choosing to go directly wear that awful shade of blue in my book. Call it the Butler effect if you will. But as with Kent I might be guilty of being too grumpy right now.

Depends on who else is on the wall

Who makes it from decades past? HOFers obviously, but does Darrell Evans? John Burkett? Jim Ray Hart? We need criteria.

"he walked 18; new league record! Struck out 18, another new league record! He also hit the sportswriter, the PA announcer, the bull mascot twice..."

Stated Criteria are:
He’s retired.
He played at least nine seasons in San Francisco.
Or, he played five years as a Giant and made at least one National League All-Star team.

LeMaster made it so it is obviously not only about elite players.

But seriously, if Johnnie LeMaster, Jeff Brantley, and Kirt Manwaring qualify, so should Ellis Burks. He wasn’t a Giant for long, but he was a key part of a big Giants team.

Regarding Burks l I don’t see Uribe on there and he was pivotal to the 87 run and important in 89.Or Morgan or Butler or Swift. All of whom played important roles in their Giants squads.

Joe Morgan’s Giants hovered around .500 one year and finished in third place (though in contention) the other. Uribe…I liked him, but I don’t think he came even close to being the player Ellis Burks was.

I’d be happy to see Butler or Swift make it.

Well the argument for all these players is there positive impact on the team out weighted the short time and numbers would suggest to a casual observer – No?

Don’t get me as advocating these players should be there just saying in that category (or type of player) there are memebers getting the same treatment.

Your right Feliz is a year short. That fine I realize popular opinion would block that any ways.

Schimdt has 5 years and an All Star appearance so he qualifies.

Ray has the 5 years though his All Star games were for AL teams. I think an argument can be made for him if they are going to count non Giant NL all star appearances.

The proper plural of Plan B is...

…Plans Batted In.

Would Aurilia actually go to Fresno if he doesn’t make the team out of ST? Or would the Giants cut him loose so he can try to catch on somewhere else?

As a potential replacement in case of injury, I like it. Beats having to call up single-A players who are clearly not ready for the majors.

As a part of the opening day roster…especially assuing Uribe’s there too…not so much.

How I break it down: Your average waffle is far superior to your average pancake, and your prototypical french toast. However, both pancakes and French toast can be tweaked into something far tastier (cornmeal pancakes? Hell yeah! Irish Cream instead of milk in your French toast batter? Sign me up!).

If I’m at a low rent place, I go for the waffle. If I’m at a more frou-frou breakfast place, more likely to go for the FT or pancakes.

Even better if you could set half the lineup for 2006 and the other half for 2004.

by wjackalope on Feb 9, 2009 10:49 AM PST reply actions

I'm curious...

If Aurilia hit .800-850 OPS in 200 ABs, mostly against lefties, would this deal still enrage you? This is his line last year against lefties:

.321 / .377 / .526

This is career:

.297 / .364 / .494

If Phelps were a 24-year-old and Richie won a job over him, that’s one thing. But Phelps is 31. We’re acting as if he’s a can’t miss kid who’s about to get screwed by the Giants. He’s a has-been. If he rips it up in camp, fine, but a roster spot is not his birthright.

To clarify a little

I’d rather take Phelps on the balance because I feel like his reasonable best case scenario is better than Aurilia’s. I think Aurilia would be the right move if the Giants were feeling risk averse, but I don’t really think an 83 win team should be risk averse.

I wouldn’t really get worked up either way though.

You know, I honestly have no idea how FRAA/FRAR is constructed but I do know it doesn’t use PBP data, so it’s entirely possible that it’s involving Range Factor and other stats like it in some way.

Here’s his line against lefties in 2007:
.240 / .265 / .411

Like I’ve said, I love Aurilia, but I have two reasons for not liking this: first, I don’t think the team really needs him. Second, after his terrible return season in 2007, I ended up kind of hating his presence on the team and wishing he’d never come back. He redeemed himself in 2008, and I wish that was the way things were left. Now, I fear he’ll come back, stink it up for a few months, get released, and our last memory of this Good Giant will be how he wasted a roster spot for much of 2009.

I very much hope I’m wrong, though.

i agree, Sabean has done absolutely nothing in the off-season to improve the hitting….fire that ####….

Or, how about this one from SFGiants.com:

Joe Crede is a bust. The Giants should have signed Eric Hinske (good goin PITT) – if the are looking at second tier corner infielders- he is a grinder & been on winners, has pop & a better glove. Sabe’s missed the boat on that one. Could see a Noah Lowry/Velez for Hank Blalock/Brandon Boggs by end of May.

I mean, Phelps is a nice pickup for what he is, a backup 1B with some power, but he is 31 years old, he has absolutely no future with the Giants (or any other MLB team). If he gets 300 ABs, great, if he doesn’t and those 300 ABs go to somebody else, who gives a rat’s ass?

The problem is that Phelps is still unlikely to get a roster spot even if he deserves it in spring training.
I don’t think anyone is saying he should get the job if he bats .220/.280/.360, while Aurilia bats .280/.320/.440.
It’s just that if Aurilia bats .220/.280/.360, and Phelps bats .280/.320/.440, then Aurilia will still most likely get the roster spot.
I think most Phelps supporters just want him to get the job if he actually outperforms Aurilia, which most of us think is likely to happen.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Feb 9, 2009 4:49 PM PST up reply actions

I doubt Aurilia gets the roster spot if he and Phelps put those lines up. Probably, if all three of Uribe, Aurilia, and Phelps put up .220/.280/.360 lines then Aurilia gets the nod just for being with the org for longer. But probably the three of them are fighting for one roster spot and the best stats gets it.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."

by WalrusMan on Feb 9, 2009 5:44 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe that was a bit of a stretch...

But let’s say that Aurilia bats .260/.310/.420 with 2 homeruns, while Phelps bats .280/.330/.450 with 5 homeruns.
Aurilia would likely get the job, based on Bochy’s hard-on for veterans and Sabean’s hard-on for familiar players.

Can’t say i really understand the need for bringing back Aurilia, given the others we have. If used sensibly, as competing for a spot in spring training & a backup & occasional starter against LHP then i’m ok with it. If he’s the starter at any point, then it’ll be pretty dissapointing.

It’s a shame that you have to worry about perfectly reasonable moves, because you’ve little confidence in the manager to use them properly.
