I wonder if anyone actually has a Brad Wellman jersey. I can’t imagine why even Brad Wellman himself would want one.

Brad is a very nice guy, and yeah, he probably realizes his jersey isn’t the biggest of collectors’ items.

Brad used to come into the copy place where I worked quite a lot. This was back in the ‘90s, when he was running a batting cage business. Always a nice guy, really cool to talk to, never full of himself or anything. I’d wear a Brad Wellman jersey proudly.

We went

I took my 7 year old and we were there for about 1 1/2 hours. We walked all around the park and ate a hot dog in the club level, but didn’t really do the stand in line for autographs thing. I asked him if he wanted to meet anyone, and in his typical way, he said “no” like it was a stupid question. We go up close views of Zito, Fred Lewis, Bochy, Rowand, Cain, Frandsen, Schierholtz, Howry, Wilson, Affeldt, etc… Zito was definitely looking like a rock star and it looks like some of his sense of style might have rubbed off on Wilson, who was wearing a jacket with a fur collar. They both spent some money on their hair stylists as well. It was pretty cool and you could definitely avoid the mobs if you tried. It was great just being at the park again and the whole experience has me feeling pretty optimistic about this season. That, I guess, is the purpose of fanfest.

Sorry, no pics, but I am still researching which dig camera to purchase.

They kept Lincecum pretty well surrounded, and of course, large crowds followed. I saw him at one Q&A under the bleachers, and then he was apparently at a private event for a chosen few on the Club Level.

Just got back

Some initial thoughts:
- It was nice being able to walk on the field, even if it did have a fertilizer/fishy smell.
- Didn’t even try getting autographs, as the lines were insanely long, even just after 10.
- As expected, the Amici’s Q&A stage was the best place to be (The Tito Fuentes Show, featuring Vida Blue and Will Clark, was quite entertaining.)
- I suppose they did their job, as now I can’t wait for Spring Training to start.

I was at the Tito Fuentes Show. I was the one who asked him about the Carribean Series. I was disappointed with his answer. But damn those three were funny.

Had a Great Time

My Observations:
-It was packed, there must have been 30-40 thousand people in attendance throughout the day.
-Autograph lines were ridiculously lonng. One went from the section adjacent to third base, all the way past the Coke Bottle to the scoreboard.
-It was great seeing the Giants clubhouse and taking pictures in the dugout.
-Even though it was not a baseball field (as the he^ said, smelled like fish), you could tell where the pitcher’s mound was and I got chills standing there.
-It was a beautiful day and that made this even better.
-Listening to Will Clark was enjoyable.
-I got a Pablo Sandoval shirt…simply money.
-And like he^ said, I am now pumped for spring training.

Section 314 FTW!

I’m sort of glad I went by myself. I got to do what I wanted to do, go where I wanted to go. I missed Fred Lewis on the KNBR stage because I was at the Frandsen/Howry/Schierholtz/Zito Q&A. :( I’m so disappointed that I didn’t get to see Fred.

I went to the Clark/Blue/Puente Q&A and goddamn they were hilarious. Tito himself was cracking me up but the other two were into it.

I also managed to get in a question at one of the medical staff Q&A’s about Jonathan’s durability issues. Dave Groeschner said Sanchez has put on a bit of weight (in the good way) and they expect 30 starts out of him. He’s been training with them in AZ since January 5 and they say he’s healthy. They continued to heap praise on Lowry and his recovery, while Merkin is behind schedule on his recovery.

During the Q&A with Bochy he said the team would carry 12 pitchers and he sees Sandoval hitting 3 in the lineup. I’m trying to read my notes that I scribbled on an envelope because I didn’t have the presence of mind to sneak in my tape recorder or even a pad of paper.

Stood in line for a DAMN LONG time to get relatively uninteresting autographs… I wish the Giants brass would’ve spaced out the relatively famous signees, because by the time I got to the front of the line, the only guys there were English, Joey Martinez, Bowker, and Hinshaw. Nothing against those guys, but I stood in line for 3 hours because I was counting on getting at least one A-list autograph (Lincecum, Cain, Randy Johnson, Rowand, Briwan Wilson… any one of those type guys I would’ve been totally fine with… or at least like an everyday player like Fred Lewis or something). Oh well… I’d do it again, but in retrospect the autograph part just wasn’t worth it.

For the autographs, I guess it’s a chance you have to be willing to take, especially with the way they shuttle the players around to each station (autographs, Q&A, photos). It’s probably easier for them to have this free-for-all system than to worry about special tickets like they used to have.

I have noticed the crowd control has gotten a little bit better each year, even with the increase in attendance. Of course, having more of the park open and accessible helps, but for the most part, I was able to make my way around the lines without much trouble.

My photos

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2193897&l=88454&id=6701337

My favorite photo

Random stuff:
- Emmannuel Burriss is popular with the ladies. Also this Lincecum guy. Whoever he is.
- They had street banners for sale (the ones they hang on streetlights downtown). I would have gotten one if I had any room in the house.
- K&K and Miller were in the McCovey loft or whatever it’s called having photos taken with fans. I didn’t get to meet them, but I was off to the side in the seating area. Kruk kept barking orders to fans (in a very tongue and cheek way) saying stuff like, “C’mon! Get over here, meat!”
- While I was helping my friend take a picture in the dugout, the bullpen phone rang. I told him to pick it up but he was scared to. A guy next to us picked it up and had an amusing conversation with whoever was on the other end.
- Johnson got the biggest laugh of the day. When Ralph Barbieri asked him, “Do you think you’re misunderstood?”, Johnson replied, “What kind of stupid question is that?”

I briefly considered getting one of those banners (went with a mystery grab bag instead), but when I looked through the pile, all I saw were Jason Schmidt banners.

RJ
- Johnson got the biggest laugh of the day. When Ralph Barbieri asked him, "Do you think you’re misunderstood?", Johnson replied, "What kind of stupid question is that?"

This makes me like Randy Johnson about 50 times more than before. Pitching well this season would also bring up the total.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??

This just makes perfect sense, does it not? Manny looks like LL Cool J. LL Cool J stands for Ladies Love Cool James. The logic is unassailable.

Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.

No way, I was standing in line for autographs. What we did instead was zip around to the different stations and took pictures of players signing. So I do have some pictures: Cain, Wilson, Hinshaw, Johnson, etc. Did a couple Q&A’s then went to the Chop House for a bite then took some more pics. All in all it was good.

by timmeh on Feb 7, 2009 11:41 PM PST reply actions

A few choice images:

The San Jose experience from a player-interaction perspective was far superior. The lines for autographs were insane.

So I just wandered around and took photos. I left about 1:00, didn’t see a lot of the players I wanted to, but oh well.

Kurkow was talking shit about Manny. I wouldn’t count on seeing him in a Giants uniform.

Clicking will take you to full – res 8×10 images. Use at will.

Stupid long line:

Huh?

Yay, Grass!

Yay, Fred Lewis!

Y so srs Fred?

A split second before sticking his tongue out at me:

Affeldt’s ring:

Jingles and Damon, trying to do his best Sabean impersonation:

Escaped Caterpillar!

Wilson likes it:

Captain Jack can’t believe it:

John Bowker can’t stop thinking about it:

Joey Martinez doesn’t know these guys….

And neither does Mr. Roberts.

Oh Ron, those boys do act up, don’t they?

Stop singing, Tim.

Hinshaw has love in his eyes –

“You’re creeping the fans out, Alex”

Prize wheel girl was cute:

Rohlinger agrees

What position does this guy play, again?

Like I said, Goofy.

BFFs?

Yeah. BFFs.

Sorry for it being so long. There are a few more pictures located in the root here

by shanghaijim on Feb 8, 2009 12:54 AM PST reply actions

I think it was just him standing next to a toothpick with almost 300 wins. I was probably 30 feet away, but Cain looked a very similar weight to last season

Crappy pictures

I don’t have a real camera so I had to use my camera phone. Sometimes I luck out with it and get good pictures. Most of what I got Saturday sucked. Two came out decent to good.

Great reporting (and pics) everyone

Some last-minute obligations caused me to miss out this year, so I’m happy to hear it was a good time (albeit more crowded than last year, apparently).

Did anyone on the Q&A or KNBR stages discuss the A-Rod roids situation, or were PEDs the Subject That Must Not Be Discussed?

It came up in the Q&A sessions with the medical staff. The general consensus was “don’t do it” in terms of steroid use. Use in MLB didn’t come up. It was mostly older people asking about kids using.

Though I did get to meet Sir Charles Barkley yesterday at a motorcycle expo in Cincinnati. I thought he would have been taller…. Nice guy. I will post the picture once my co-worker emails it to me.
