Bochy and Sabean's last year under contract

Unless Sabean has some agreement to stay with the team he failed again this offseason. Did Nuekom give him a unwritten agreement to stay with the club past 2009? Right now Molina is slated as our number 4 hitter in the lineup and that is a piss poor move. Molina had career year in 2008 and can't be expected to put up the numbers he had last year. He is a year older and did'nt put up enough power numbers to make the Giants competitive in the league. The Giants were last in HR's by alot last year and they did nothing to improve the lineup except sign Renteria.

The Giants continue to wait around for something to happen and Bochy may be the one who takes the blame. How can he win with this lineup? I don't want to hear about small ball because power wins in todays game. It looks like Bochy will be holding the bag at the end of the year.

It looks like the Giants will wait around for 2010 when 36 mill comes off the books. Will they sign a power hitter or two? Stay tunned.

“Unless Sabean has some agreement to stay with the team he failed again this offseason.” So the only way Sabean hasn’t failed is if he has an agreement to stay with the team?

I like it better when he posts sober, though. This one was clearly a drunk-post.

It's not that I don't like what you've written

but in this case you’re clearly wrong. The Giants have done more than “nothing” to address the lineup issues, which you’d know if you’d actually been paying attention lately. Bocock, Aurilia, Castillo is replaced by Renteria, Paul Stanley, Ishi and Phelps. Not world-beaters, but still a helluva lot better than last year’s offering.

And didn’t you hear? We’re totally signing Manny.

Methinks there’s a whole lot of stupid going around with most football sides of the internet. For some reason, that sport just doesn’t get a lot of people who want to talk intelligently about it.

Even NinersNation, as good as it’s gotten, suffers from a serious case of the nfl.com message board syndrome from time to time.

I’ve noticed a distinct difference in NN GDTs and McC GDTs. I think it’s down to the sport. Baseball seems to attract smarter discussion, mostly because there isn’t something happening every 3 seconds.

by bondslegend on Feb 6, 2009 7:46 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

And there is something happening in football every 3 seconds?

It takes the players 30 seconds to line up at the line to make a 5 second play and then they have to line up for 30 seconds again.

In Dodger stadium

Seating is arranged by zip codes. I used to be able to sit in the bleachers in left behind Bonds when he was first signed, and meet up with other Giants fans and genuinely pleasant Dodger fans. Wouldn’t sit out there for free now, it’s a gang-infested barrio. Even the lower deck along the baselines is drunken and trashy, though with a lesser likelihood of weapons. From inside first and third to behind home plate is full of poseurs from the West Side, but at least you don’t have to worry about an incident.

Reason: completely illogical asshats. First they wanted D’Antoni out, Now they’re upset that D’Antoni left and refuse to accept that the reason why they can’t win is because Amare and Nash cannot play defense. Furthermore, they continue to sell out games, even though their owner has made it completely obvious that he is only concerned about making money, even at the expense of winning. Moreover, they’re unknowledgable and cheer when oposing players are seriously injured.

I did want to note how great Giants fans are. I don’t get to many games in SF because I live in AZ. But the one I went to last year was great (Giants v. Padres, Maddux v. Cain, 13 innings). Best fan’s part of the game: Some young teenagers tried to start the wave in the bleachers, only to have about 20 old men stand up and threaten their life if they continued. “we don’t do the wave in San Francisco!”. Classic.

Also, most gimmicky between-innings stunts are lame, but I do admit I loved the air guitar gimmick. Don’t hold it against me.

what the hell is wrong with Steve Kerr?

He took over a very good team and has proceeded to dismantle it piece by piece. That Shaq trade was such a huge favor to the Heat, just to get Shaq’s contract off the books would have been a big win for them, to also get Shawn Marion on top of that is just a fleecing.

The Giants have a budget

that’s a pretty smart thing to do. Most successful businesses do.

If Neukom wanted to increase it, then Sabean could spend more money and get some better free agents. Even that doesn’t guarantee success. And, its a lot harder than it looks. You might want to think about that before your next post.

The $36 million could almost all go to one player

The only top free agent who might be out there after the upcoming season is Matt Holliday. And because the demand will likely exceed the demand, he probably would get $20 mill or so per year despite an economy that may still be in the toilet.

I would re-sign Brian Sabean as a reward for some nice drafting and signing the past three years, and I would replace Bruce Bochy with Manny Acta.

I like my job and I hate the people I have to work with.

by Lars The Wanderer on Feb 6, 2009 8:06 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Scenario

But first, you all are so bad, he basically thinks that Sabean is laying down on the job because he doesn’t think much of what Sabean had done (or not done) this off-season, and speculating that maybe Sabean feels his job is secure so why should he try to anything good to help the team. I don’t agree, but that’s basically what a segment of the fans have been saying almost since Sabean took over as GM.

Here is the scenario I see. Neukom has been a man of action so far. For a technology lawyer, he has been much better at marketing the Giants than Magowan, who used to run the very consumer oriented Safeway grocery chain. From “The Giants Way” to hiring Will Clark to allowing the Giants to proclaim their saber-ness by pointing to their internal saber-geek, he has been trying to win the fans over as to how the Giants are run and represented.

The way I see it, if Neukom did not like Sabean’s methods at all, Sabean would be gone already. In the big scheme of things, eating Sabean’s contract would be a mild hiccup in terms of what the Giants pay for every year. So either he likes Sabean or at least is willing to give him a chance.

Now if he likes Sabean, he can’t advertise that out loud to the public. He should know that a lot of people don’t like Sabean, some never liked Sabean from almost the day he took the GM job. If he supported Sabean from the get-go, the Sabean Naysayers would just say that Neukom is just the same-old as Magowan and put him down. Hence the only position he can really take, if this is how he feels, is his being open to revisiting re-hiring Sabean at the end of the season.

And that works too if he’s on the fence with Sabean.

However, here’s why I think he likes Sabean. Early on he set the bar for success very low, in my opinion. He said he expected 2009 to be a year to be competitive and 2010 a year to be contenders. Well, even before the off-season officially began, the Giants were competitive, they were basically at .500 for the last two months of the season. While you can’t expect Sandoval to hit that well again, neither should you expect Rowand to hit so poorly either, nor Sanchez and the #5 pitcher (now Randy Johnson) to pitch so poorly either. Now with the players we have acquired, being competitive should be a given now.

That gives Sabean a small hurdle to jump in order to get another contract.

And I think he deserves that contract. The Giants are in great position to be competing for the division title for the next 4 to 8 years, at least, with Lincecum and Cain now, Bumgarner and Alderson at the end, and the four of them in the middle somewhere. Great pitching is what’s going to get us deeper into the playoffs, they are also what will enable us to win even with a lesser offense. And with Posey and Villalona coming up in 1 to 3 seasons, plus Lewis and Sandoval now, and maybe Frandsen, Burriss, Ishikawa, Noonan, and Gillaspie, the offense looks to be much better in a very short timeframe.

People get too hung up about what he did in the past, both good and bad. They are part of the equation, but really, what really matters is where we are now and where we are headed. I like where we are now and where we are headed, I see good times just ahead, the light is at the end of the tunnel. Doesn’t mean it’s going to happen, but the elements are there and hopefully the young players will continue to develop and not get injured.

I agree with this, but wonder what Neukom would do for a GM if he fired Sabes. Would he pick an internal exec as an interim? Go find a retread (the people that get mentioned for every opening)? Does he know what a GM does day-to-day? Does he know how to interview and evaluate a GM candidate?

These are all things I suspect Neukom figured he would spend this season learning, so when the time came at the end of 09, he could responsibly go forth and replace Sabean if he deemed it necessary.

They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long

by bgunn on Feb 6, 2009 11:48 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I've read about that rationale

But he’s been a significant owner on the team for years now. Wouldn’t you think he would have come to a conclusion of some sort on whether he likes what Sabean is doing or not?

And if he knew he wasn’t happy with Sabean, then he had at least from when he was announced as replacement to his first day to figure out the job of GM (that is, assuming he didn’t already know that already, as a detailed oriented person, if I were in his place, I would have learned the much of that over the years) plus at the same time research who the young up and coming assistant GMs currently in the majors, like the Dodgers’ Kim Ng, who not only has been highly praised and considered for a number of positions already, but is also a minority on two counts, which the Giants have appeared to make a conscious decision to promote, like with the switch to a female announcer.

It’s not that big a research job if you have the connections and the time. Heck, he could get a subscription to BP, they have had a lot of interviews over the years with young up and coming assistant GMs and such.

I will only say Sabean failed to get a legitimate power hitter for the Giants after the season officially starts. I think there is still a good chance he will do something during ST. Lots of things can happen with potential trade partners during ST and in this market patience will be rewarded.
