Dan Uggla
Dan Uggla is a second baseman. Dan Uggla is about to get expensive. Dan Uggla plays for a team that likes to exchange "about to get expensive" for "not expensive." Dan Uggla is a middle-of-the-order hitter who is under team control for the next three years.
I can't stop thinking ab...you get the idea.
Uggla's defense is a constant butt of jokes, but it's hard to know just how good (or bad) he is. According to FanGraphs, he's logged a good defensive season, an abysmal season, and an average season. So I can write without any hedging that he's either good, bad, or just alright.
Under team control for the forseeable future? Check. Plus power? Check. On a team that could conceivably trade him if the price is right? Check. So here are some questions to test the waters...
1. Would you trade Jonathan Sanchez in a Dan Uggla deal?
2. Would you trade Tim Alderson in a Dan Uggla deal?
3. Would you trade Barry Zito -- throwing in $1M! -- in a Dan Uggla deal?
4. Would you like me to just stop with the hypothetical situations and just tell us what you'd be willing to give up?
It's easy to think of Uggla as the cement-shoed goof who had ground balls bounce off of him as "Yakity Sax" played over the PA during last year's All-Star Game. That's understandable. But he's a pretty good player. A darned good player, even. I'd give up Sanchez, and I'd even trade Alderson. Alderson is a fantastic prospect, even if I'm constantly reminded of the famous Dutch pitching prospect, Tins Taapp. The only way I'd trade Alderson is if the Giants received an All-Star-level player who is controllable for at least three years. There might only one player in basebal who a) fits that description and b) is a reasonable trade target. And he ain't got no alibi: he's Uggla.
Uggla's gettin' antsy. Would the Marlins accept a one-for-one swap with Alderson or Sanchez? Almost certainly not, and I'm not sure how much more I'd be willing to throw in. That's probably why we haven't even heard whispers about an Uggla deal.
For about three paragraphs, though, I was excited to get Uggla. Open Wistful Transaction Thread

I would certainly enterain the idea of trading Alderson for Uggle
We would likely have to throw in another piece, but this is the sort of idea the Giants need to be pursuing.
Alderson + Noonan for Uggla? Get it done, Sabes.

Uggla’s a good hitter (and, looking at his stats, gives Rob Deer a run for his money on TTO%!), but somehow I just can’t bring myself to be excited about him. Dunno why.

By the Way
If This team is able to secure Dan Uggla for anything reasonable, they instantly need to consider dumping the money for Manny as we would become instant favorites in the NL west for the next 2 years.
Sorry Kevin.
With that in mind, Maybe Fred Lewis is the player you package w/ alderson for uggla.

This question in MOOT.
Dan Uggla is a redneck. His interviewer with Sports Illustrated last year was barred from asking anything about politics or the environment (wtf?).
While I am aware that Mr. Uggla cannot refuse a trade, I think he would hate working in San Francisco so much that he would likely blow-up in a white-hot flash of silver.
And besides, SF could never, ever, ever have a redneck at the 2nd Base position.
But he can do the DINGERZ and the RIBBIEZ – so, I’m in.

From Wikipedia: “Dan also has his own fan club at Dolphin Stadium who call themselves "Uggla’s Ugglies.”"
Also, he was born within two weeks of me, so he has that going for him.

I was interested in him before. I now 100% want him on the Giants. Gameday threads would be awesome with this image.

Yes
Considering Florida likes ‘em young and inexpensive there are many players who can make this work from SF’s point of view.
whoa
thought there was something wrong with the site there for a second – time warp back to October, or something. I think it’d still be great to get Uggles (that’d soften him up). I know that Sanchez and Alderson are the most intuitive players to consider, but it would be worth trying to deal them a package that DIDN’T involve pitching.
As I said back in the fall, they want to improve defensively, and they don’t want to spend a lot. So, deal them Lewis and Frandsen (or even Burriss). Hell, throw in Ishikawa. I mean, selling high on Winn would work too, but that would not satisfy the second condition.
Ok, so maybe that still doesn’t get it done. I’d give them Sanchez and Burriss. Or Alderson, Frandsen, and Ishikawa.
I would try to avoid trading too many players who can contribute to the club this year, especially if you’re trying to “win now” by trading for Uggla.
by AndOnTheDrums... on Feb 5, 2009 3:11 PM PST up reply actions
point taken
so what if it is Alderson, Burriss, and Ishikawa? IMHO, the first two should not be on the big league club this year, and Ishi is out of options, and likely to be benched in favour of Sandoval. I think we’d be lucky if they accepted this package. The more I think about it, FwF is probably right that we’d need to give up Alderson and Lewis to get it done (see above).
The latest scuttle
is that Sandoval plays 3B and Ishikawa 1B, with Sandoval moving to 1B when facing a lefty, in order to spare Ishikawa of hitting against LHP.
However, Ishikawa’s record of hitting against LHP isn’t that bad in the minors, certainly no worse than a number of lefty hitting 1B currently starting full-time in the majors.

I too would give up Alderson and would throw in a Sosa or Pucetas if that would get the deal done… I wouldn’t be willing to go beyond that however because of A) a somewhat shaky defense and B) the realization that he won’t be that cheap for that much longer.

the more I get involved in this post, the more I get the feeling that Grant is cackling away to himself at the fact that he can throw an Uggla post out there months after it is relevant, and still reduce work productivity for suckers like me by at least a quarter. Hook. Line. Sinker.
I wrote this in 2007, actually.
But I saw the MLB Trade Rumors post about Uggla feeling a little ticked about no Marlins extension, and the Marlins all offseason have said “We are not trading Dan Uggla. I mean, probably not. Really, anyone is fair game, but I really doubt Uggla’s going anywhere. Maybe.”
by Grant Brisbee on Feb 5, 2009 9:41 PM PST up reply actions
Interesting premise
From what I can see in Uggla’s PMR defensive charts, he was mostly slightly poor defensively in 2006, though good going toward 1B, but was bad in 2007 mostly, and in 2008 he was mostly positive.
I would be OK trading Alderson for him but not Sanchez. Uggla is nice, but there’s a number of warning signs. His K% was up greatly in 2008. His HR/FB was up greatly as well. And his BABIP was up high as well. Those are all possible signs that he’s going to regress backward on any of those. As much as people seem to like Alderson more than Villalona, I think he’s not going to be a top of rotation guy but I think Sanchez can be. Plus, Sanchez if he does well will be in for a lot of money.
Thus I think Alderson would work in trade but they would require probably a 2B in return plus another prospect probably.
I probably wouldn’t do the trade though. I would like to see Frandsen get a chance to start for us. But talking strictly in terms of what it would take to trade for Uggla, I think Alderson, Matos (they are looking for a closer and/or other bullpen guys and he’s probably ready for the big show soon, if not now), plus I am not sure who. They might like Burriss, but he’s our SS after Renteria is out.

Why do we have to waste so much ink with fan trades?
Uggla to the Giants is not going to happen. Florida said they are not going to trade Uggla. The Giants said they are not going to trade their young pitching.
No ink! I ♥ the environment. And if posting wacky offseason trade ides in February is wrong, then I don’t want to be right.
And what the Marlins president said was, “Everyone is on the trading block, but some players are more likely than others to get traded and I would certainly put (Uggla) in the less-likely (category) as we speak today.”
by Grant Brisbee on Feb 5, 2009 9:46 PM PST up reply actions
I would trade anything
not named Lincecum, Bumgarner, Posey, Villalona, and Cain. Unfortunately, that leaves pretty much nothing of value besides Alderson and Sanchez. Maybe those two with maybe Brian Wilson and Osiris Matos or something of the like could work, but it would never happen. Maybe in my dreams though…
It's DAN UGGLA

Zito
Zito sounds about right. Heck, I’m so generous I’d even throw in Dave Roberts. And if they REALLY pressed, I’d add Aaron Rowand. But they’d have to press with at least their pinkie finger. Just blowing a kiss wouldn’t quite do it.
Unless that was all they could offer, of course.
First off I presume these questions are meant in the time frame between June and November.
Yes
No
Duh
Hey whatever keeps you sane and out of jail.
I guess I run counter to the flow here in that I would rather keep Tim v2.0 and the other prospects. My reasoning is both it spreads up the risk of failure as well as the "kicking ourselves in the arse" potential down to just a couple years. If Sanchez does well The Fish will flip him were as if Uggla fits well at 2nd, 3rd or 1st we will probably resign him.
Here comes Captain Obvious wearing his Atomic Wedgie!
I have randomly posted..
from time to time that an infield bat (mostly corners but middle works) with Ugglas kind of offensive production is a good fit for this team (and more likely than Manny). So, I would take uggla in a trade. Dont know what kind of trade….would the marlins ltake prospect + Dave Roberts? Please?
rosterbation
would anybody be tempted to go Nate + Dirty for Uggla if Manny is signed? Its a lot to give up, but just imagine having TWO real life middle of the order hitters.

As I said in December and January. . .
You can look it up. Here’s one of my earlier rants:
“[My plan, though I know Grant thinks I’m over valuing Sanchez is to send Sanchez, Fred Lewis, Jack Taschner, Velez and a decent minor league prospect to the Marlins for Uggla and Hermidia.] Marlins are dreadful defensively in the infield (except for Hanley). This trade allows them to place Bonafacio at 2b and be strong up the middle; improves their bullpen; allows them to trim a soon-to-be-costly player (Uggla, which they hinted at all winter) and add speed and a starting outfielder —plus a potential #2 or #3 starter.”
This deal improves both teams where they need it and how they need it. It places even greater concern on Noah’s durability (at least at the beginning of the season, when the minor-league talent is not yet quite ready), but this begins our march back to contention. We’d still need a bonafide #4 (I’d hit Uggla 5th), but it’s a beginning.
Don't believe everything you think.
