Giants Sabermetrican Comes Out of the Closet

Not that there's nothing wrong with that. Joan Ryan has a nice personal interest story on the Giants internal sabermetrician, Jeremy Shelley: http://sfgiants.mlblogs.com/archives/2009/02/the_numbers_game.html I found this part interesting:
"I'm a little uncomfortable saying anything more than that,'' Shelley tells me. "What I can say is that analysis in baseball has gotten so sophisticated and it's changing all the time. I read, read, read - every baseball web site, every publication, everything.
So Grant, Xanthan/Chris, everyone, keep up the good work, and know that someone within the Giants is reading what you write here.

Cmon, who wouldn't?

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Maybe now Sabean will have to start listening to him, since the backlash in SF would be too much.

Don’t tempt me. On the Ramirez thread, when someone said Frandsen was in the YESYESYESYESOMGYES camp, I was going to make the “thinking” joke.

I’d love to know how they do their player evaluations, and how their projection systems differ from the mainstream ones.

giants metrics

If the player is in his thirties, past his prime, overpriced, and has showed years of mediocrity, he will be high on the giants’ free agent wish list. Low obp even in the presence of a high BA is crucially important. The exception being Bonds.

Boggling.

Lunatic Fringe: Brian, you are an ape!
