Roster question
I was wondering if a non-roster spring training invitee makes the club, and signs a new contract, can they be sent down to the minors at some point or to they have to just be DFA'd?

Sorry, I meant to add if they were struggling, you know, cause they obviously don’t have to be sent down unless they’re sucking.

Wasnt Yabu sent down at a point last year?
I think he was, not sure. Also not sure if he was originally an invitee.

It depends.
If they have minor league options left then yes they can. For example, Noah Lowry has an option left, so he could be sent down. Yabu I think can be sent down too, since he never burned up his options getting better in the minors since he came from Japan ready for the bigs.
If Aurilia makes the team, then the team doesn’t want him on the team, they have to DFA him and most likely he’d refuse the assignment and become a free agent. we’d be on the hook for the rest of his salary still, unless another team signs him and then we’re only on the hook for 60% of his salary (assuming a $1 million contract and minor league minimum is 400k).

Lowry doesn’t have a minor league contract, though. He’s still finishing out a multi-year contract he got back in 2006.

Which point are you arguing against? Lowry can be sent to AAA but he would make the same amount he would in the majors. If Aurilia doesn’t make the team then he goes to the minors (if he wants, he may just ask to be released and get his release from the team). If Aurilia makes the team, to go to the minors he’d have to be DFA’d.

I’m not arguing against any point. It’s just that the original question was about non-roster invitees.

Oh.
Well I think the point still stands, just depends on the number of options.

Yeah, that’s my understanding, too.

Thanks WalrusMan. I’m aware of the options scenario for players who came up with the club, but was just wondering about players that may be given fresh contracts out of spring training (say Phelps was the opening day 1B, then tanked, would it be possible to send him down, or would they just DFA him). I guess if he accepted the assignment then he’d go down, if not he’d just be released.
Makes sense, I was just confused as to if options are reset for players like him who may sign out spring training, or if once you burn up your options they’re done for life.
