How much better than Dewitt will he be? And is that difference worth the 17th pick?

The is about the best scenario that DBacks could had hoped for.

exactly.
Block Black DeWitt and lose a pick. Go bums

Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

Apparently it is a 1 year deal. 3.4 million base with 4.6 million in incentives.

Agent Ned strikes again. He learned all about this kind of move from the master.

Thank you, Los Angeles
You guys rock.

You guys are nuts. Orlando Hudson on a cheap one-year deal, with DeWitt around as 2b/3b backup, or as trade bait? That’s a big improvement.
by Evan on Feb 20, 2009 1:01 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I agree
I appreciate the fact that people properly value draft picks these days, but if you are a team with a real shot at the playoffs and you have a chance to add a very good player on a year deal at a position where an upgrade helps you a lot, I would give up the pick any day of the week.

I think DeWitt is similar to Burriss. Thanks for last year, we really didn’t expect that, now show us what you can do in AAA.
We’ll never know who the Dodgers could have selected, but hopefully it would have been the next Cole Hamels, Brad Lidge, or Roy Halladay. And hopefully, the Diamondbacks will pass on that player for the next Rick Asadoorian or Ben Diggins.
by Grant on Feb 20, 2009 1:27 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
What? DeWitt is going to hit a lot more than Burriss ever will.
by Hobbes2d on Feb 20, 2009 2:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Not in skill. Just in situation. Both weren’t expected to reach the majors, both skipped a level to do so, both did just fine, but both could probably use some more seasoning, which means a tear shouldn’t be shed if they’re blocked for a year (or two.)

I think if he stays healthy it could be a great deal for the Dodgers.
by chilibean_3 on Feb 20, 2009 1:16 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I tend to agree that it's worth doing
but I’m not sure about “big improvement”. According to BP’s PECOTA thingy, it’s liable to be worth somewhere between no wins and one win for the Bums (Hudson with 2.6 WARP, DeWitt with 2.1). The real sticking point to me is defense. If O-Dawg plays second like he used to – and I can see this happening – I think I’d much rather have him than DeWitt (who, to me at least, is an unknown quantity at 2nd).

a one year deal with a team option might have been a better business decision
by wilriv21 on Feb 20, 2009 1:38 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
True. I wonder if all the free agents are refusing such options, in hopes that the market will be better next year. If so, I think they’re going to be disappointed.

Except that O-Dog is good and arguably worth the draft pick.
So not really that similar.

He’ll be really good when the Dodgers play Arizona. Everywhere else? Not so much…
His home and away splits have been pretty severe while he has been with Arizona.
by Lars The Wanderer on Feb 20, 2009 2:20 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
true
but they’re only locking him up for one year. in this market, at these prices, to give up a first round pick, i’d like to get more than one year from a pretty good when/if healthy second baseman
Idolizing Robb Nen since 2002...

He might turn out to be a Type A or B for the Dodgers so they may be able to get a pick in the following draft if Hudson signs elsewhere.

Renteria
Is it just me or does this make siging Edgar for 2/18.5 seem totatlly insane? I know it was before the FA market crashed but a lot of the other GMs saw it coming and were cautious. Now it looks like at least 10 million too much. That is A LOT OF MONEY.
Bring me the head of Barry Zito!
by elGuapo on Feb 20, 2009 1:44 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn’t worry about it. The signing solved a problem for the team, and it’s not going to have much of an effect on the budget down the road, unlike Zito/Rowand-level deals.

Definite OVERPAY
just listening to other GMs it was at least a $6MM overpay.
by wilriv21 on Feb 20, 2009 2:15 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
an overpay, yes. But nothing to worry about.

It was obvious right from the start that the Giants overpaid for a declining veteran……..once again.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
by oldrips on Feb 20, 2009 1:49 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Easy to say that in hindsight
But there’s no way in knowing how much Stl would have offered him. Atlanta too once they lost out on Furcal.
by Hobbes2d on Feb 20, 2009 2:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
it was an overpay but only because of what happened afterwards. I blame Sabean for alot, but I don’t blame him for not being clairvoyant. How was he to know that all of a sudden (to the point of possible collusion) everyone would start worrying about the economy and stop spending money? Certainly all Sabean had to go on at the time was teams like the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers tossing around money just like everything was normal. Renteria was the second best shortstop out there, and the best one DID sign for more years and more money, so Sabean can’t really be faulted.

Ken Gurnick, of MLB.com, reports Los Angeles Dodgers 2B Blake DeWitt could move to third base and 3B Casey Blake could move to left field if the team signs free-agent 2B Orlando Hudson.
No Manny?
by ktice on Feb 20, 2009 2:47 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
The Dodgers’ pitching staff isn’t that strong this year. If that’s their offense, they’re going to be awful. The signing of Hudson doesn’t lessen their need for Manny in any way, shape, or form.

True that is is not that strong this year but it has plenty of potential. Billingsley is a stud. Kershaw could be the second coming. Kuroda is not bad. McDonald has a chance to really blossom.

fwiw
their bullpen also took a huge hit in losing Saito and possibly Joe Beimel.
by boonitez on Feb 20, 2009 9:22 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Surprised no one has signed Beimel.
by wilriv21 on Feb 20, 2009 10:06 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Billingsley is a stud, but he’s recovering from a broken leg. You never know how long it takes to completely recover from that. It’s also mental as well as physical. I know they project him to be completely healthy by Opening Day, but he’s still a question mark.

Clayton Kershaw and his 1.5 WHIP is no certainty to have a major impact in ’09 either. He is only 21 and definitely has the stuff to be a stud. Almost a K an inning, but he also sports a 4.4 BB/9.

You guys critical of this move by the Doggers (sic) are really overvaluing the #17 pick. I also think Sabean would have been roasted if, here on Feb 20, we didn’t have a MLB SS, and were going into the season with Burriss and who at SS. Fact is (thanks to Xanthan) Renteria is good for about 2 wins (I think maybe 3) and is worth the cost. He is a bona fide MLB hitter, good for the #2 spot in the order (unlike Burriss). and is just slightly above average defensively.
by allfrank on Feb 20, 2009 5:03 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I’m not sure Xanthan has much to do with Renteria’s value.

Being a GM is tough. I liked the Renteria signing at the time, but now you could make the case that for about the same money, give or take a couple of million, he could have signed Orlando Cabrera, Orlando Hudson AND Joe Crede. It will be interesting to see how the trio of Renteria, Frandsen (or Burress) and Travis Ishikawa do in relation to those three. Sabean gets a partial pass because he couldn’t have forseen this happening when he signed Renteria, but at the end of next season decisions like this might wind up costing him his job.

And ...
They could have signed those 3 guys and had to give up 1st and 2nd round draft picks. I can’t imagine the depths of the bitchfest that would occur if that happened.

Bruce Jenkins is dumb, reason #7,436:
In his blog post about Hudson signing, he says it’s the consensus that the NL West will come down to the Dodgers and the Giants
– without even mentioning the Diamondbacks.
