Dodgers offer Manny 1-year deal
I am not going to advocate signing Manny Ramirez. I'm kind of neutral on the whole prospect. I do think this move by the Dodgers is brilliant, but then again Dodger brilliance makes me sad. One year? From the team that wants him the most? Scott Boras must be the best agent in all of baseball.

Me neither. At the same time, I wouldn’t be all that upset if they didn’t.

This is just going to piss off Manny and Boras. He wants long-term. If the Dodgers aren’t careful, he is going to land in the Giants’ lap just like Buster Olney stated the other day.

Fine
LA then knows they went the extra mile, their fanbase knows this. Meanwhile LA moves forward with $25M to spend on Abreu, Hudson and Sheets and still have money left over.

Honestly
I like our team better with Manny than theirs with Abreu, Hudson, and Sheets.

Offering a guy a 1 year deal is not the extra mile..
It’s called low-balling a guy.
by Bitter Fan on Feb 3, 2009 12:33 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It is called negotiation. LA has made 3 offers to Ramirez. This is the first and only time he has even acknowledged any offer from LA. Word is that these are the only offers Ramirez has received from ANY team. Why bid against yourself?
by wilriv21 on Feb 3, 2009 3:11 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
giants need to counter with La's first offer
2 year 45 guaranteed with a third year team option. Boras and ManRam would have to jump at it to not lose face. Everyone wins.

The thing about a one year deal
is that next year’s free agent class is shaping up to be quite weak. Manny could very likely get more total money by accepting a one year contract and taking his chances next season than by accepting a 2-year deal now.

Is there any other team left that has any genuine interest in Manny?

hes got to be worth 3/60 to someone : yanks, mets, angels, nats, cubs someone should pay this guy at least that. But hey then again no one would sign barry last year at min. contract so maybe there is some conspiracy shit going on.

Boras claims that "other teams" are interested
I think LA is calling Boras’ bluff here by offering the one year deal. They don’t seem to believe Boras has offers from other teams or are really interested.
A McC newcomer but not outstanding.
by SFGuy on Feb 3, 2009 1:35 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
The Dodgers have enough young position players to call his bluff.
The Giants are the team that needs him to have a shot at the playoffs, the Dodgers would arguably still be favored even if the Giants signed Manny (particularly if the Dodgers then signed Dunn and Sheets, which would probably be cheaper anyway).

I Disagree
I don’t think the Dodgers have the rotation or bullpen to win the west if the Giants get Manny and they pick up dunn/abreu/hudson and sheets.

Billingsley, Kuroda, Kershaw
Throw in Sheets, and they’re not far behind the Giants. I still like their bullpen and lineup better.

Billingsley is coming off surgery, Kershaw may start off in the minors…I’ll give you Kuroda and Sheets, but that still doesn’t match our rotation. With Affeldt and Howry, I like our bullpen better.

Billingsley's injury was a broken leg.
Originally, he was projected to be ready for spring training, and the most recent reports say he’s walking around pain free.
Beyond wishful thinking, I don’t see any reason to think Kershaw would start in the minors. He threw 107 solid major league innings last season.
Also, Schmidt’s always floating around, like particles in a shoulder.

Yup
A torn flexor tendon, which is what is keeping teams (specifically the Rangers, I believe) from signing him.

but also thinks Manny will basically mail it in if he comes here.
Olney is also thinking along the same lines:

$25 Million/year is too much. $40/2 years is still probably too much. The Botts he puts in the seats will be there anyway for the beginning of the season, and gone when/if the Giants start losing and Manny starts phoning it in. If were talking about a Ramirez that plays third base it would be a different story.
Kent. Hall of Famer. Giant.

i can’t believe he wouldn’t take the $25 mil for the one year, and go get a 2-3 yr $20 mil per, LF/dh job next year in the A.L
boros never ceases to amaze me. ( not in a good way)

I have a sneaky feeling
that the Giants will put out some kind of 40+ million offer for 2 years pretty quickly here. I also think there’s a good chance he’d take it. And I would be thrilled with a 2-year contract at 20+ million per.
Plus, if they do sign him, they have got to have him before FanFest, right??

If signing Manny makes you want to dump the Giants you should probably just light up that hat and hoodie right now and save yourself the trouble.

I’m not going to get into it again.
I guess it’s just a moral stand or something.

I wouldn’t really burn anything. I wouldn’t support the Giants during his tenure though.

but you supported them when they had Bonds? Isn’t Bonds the ultimate “like the stats, not the personality” guy?

LOLing at the Sox' Abreu offer.
Let’s make Manny a four year offer loaded with disincentives , like $20 , 000 paid back every time you take a day off without a significant ligament tear. Or $10 , 000 per foot of lateral shadow – tracking travel.
This just in...Bobby Estalella can apply oral suction to a deceased pack animal's penile extremity.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I think Manny could be a bargain for some team in 2009, even at $20 million—just not sure the Giants are that team. He’s either a virtuous or vicious cycle. Put him in the right situation, don’t make him feel like you’re getting him on the cheap, protect him in the lineup, and he probably rakes the ball all season long. Put him on a team that struggles to score runs and whose pitchers give up a lot of fly ball outs, and he’ll be getting to the ballpark 10 minutes before first pitch and sitting in the dugout, sticking pins in his Scott Boras voodoo doll.
My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.
