"indefatigable Baggarly?"
freaking guy had a “Happy New Year, I’m on vacation” post on his blog for about three weeks. I should have his schedule!!
Brian Sabean's dad- will make a few phone calls to help his son find a new job after next season
In his defense...
That’s probably his only real vacation of the year. The rest of the time he’s dragging his ass around following the Giants.

The beat writer where I work just came back to work this week after comping the entire off-season. It was insane. Like, cause nothing happens in the offseason, right, guy from the 1950s?

Jackie Robinson
In the 50’s, the Giants traded for Jackie Robinson in the off-season.
and this week, he's on jury duty
not exactly living it up!

Jackson Williams
Hope Baggs is correct on Williams. Jacks emergence could have domino effect on Sandoval, Posey, Gillaspie etc
Williams Who
Was surprised to see Williams on the list at all. Want to hear Baggs reasons on Jacks.

Q: Don from Rosemont, IL asks: Having Posey in the system notwithstanding, does Jackson Williams profile as a backup catcher? Is there a real possibility that he can hit enough to be an everyday player?
A: Moderator: Williams was a fringe top-30 player for me before I began collecting information. But he rocketed all the way into the teens because of a flat-out superlative instructional league. He made simple changes to his approach at the plate that allowed him to use all fields. I think he bought into the idea that he was only in pro ball for his defensive skills, which are among the best in the minor leagues. He needed a shot of confidence that he could be a competitive hitter, too, and coaches believe he’s primed for a breakout season in 2009. His manager at Augusta, Andy Skeels, came up in the Padres system with the likes of Sandy Alomar and Benito Santiago. Defnensively, he said neither of those All-Stars were as good as Williams at the same stage. That’s high praise.
Pardon me if I don’t hold my breath about this. I fully expect tabletop cold fusion before I see Jackson Williams in a ML uniform.
The top 10 were pretty reasonable, but after that there was a lot of hamartia.
Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005.
Where is Stanley Pons when we need him?
If Jacks is as solid defensively as we keep hearing he has a good chance of being a ML backup.
If this is enough offense to be a 10 year starter in the bigs, you gotta think Williams can be a #2 backstop. Good to hear he changed his approach.
Also, he probably gained 10 spots for having two last names.

Every year I order BA’s Handbook and Baseball Prospectus together because I’m a slave to Super Saver Shipping…and every year I wish I weren’t so cheap, as other people get the damn books before I do.

That’s what Amazon tells me. It’s their world, I just read in it.

The only logical conclusion is that Amazon hates me.

No English? Merkin # 31?
and as mentioned above, Jackson above.. well anybody.
if there is someone he missed off that could be on the team in 2009 or 2010, I think its Mr 40-man roster English.
Is that Merkin at #31?

You can find a bunch more info here, including why certain guys (like Jackson) are where they are.

Peguero
I don’t recall hearing too much about him last year. He definitely flew under the radar for me last season.
Andy mentioned him during the chat as a 2009 breakout candidate:
Q: Mad Bum from San Jose asks: Who are the Giants’ breakout candidates for 2009 among those not listed in the top 10?
A: Moderator: Francisco Peguero has a very good blend of tools and makeup. He could be primed for a breakout season.
Of course, they ALL could be primed for a breakout season. Aside from the “tools and makeup” (I assume Andy wasn’t talking about Makita and Maybeline) does anyone know much about this guy? He hasn’t hit for much power so far, but is pretty good as stealing bases. Apparently, he’s played all over the outfield. But he landed at #22 on the list, so there must be something to him.

Peguero redux
Well, based on just looks, he looks like he could be a real stud. When I saw him last year, he had that whole natural-athlete thing down pat. The ball really carries well off his bat, and he looks fluid in the OF. If RaRod reaches this level of development in 2-3 years, we’ll all be in line to have his babies. He, of course, needs to work on all those pesky details like recognizing the curveball and pulling the inside pitches (greater upper-body strength would help here) and not the outside pitches.
I would not be shocked to see him in our Top 15 this time next year. I’m not predicting that, but he certainly has the raw talent.
Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005.
hinshaw
That kind of seems like a random placement. I guess it might depend on your standards if he qualifies for prospect lists or not. But 18th? He’s only a reliever, but he’s had some success already and is one of the higher upside pen guys, because of his k rate. Just seems weird.
Also, Williams’ placement surprised me.

Is there that big a difference between Joey and Pucetas?
One is horribly overrated?

Though neither is particularly young. Speaking of which, I was rather amazed reading the Prospect Handbook to note that Billy Sadler is already 27. As of course, is his college teammate Brian Wilson. Which lead me to look up Hinshaw (26), Romo (26 next month), and Taschner (31 — good lord he’s been around forever). Frandsen and Velez turn 27 in May, while Bowker, Ishikawa and Rohlinger all turn 26 this year. And of course Freddie Lewis just turn 28. It’s really amazing how old a lot of our youth is.
Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!
But you don’t want rookies and near rookies in their prime because they need time to get adjusted to the extraordinary development leap that is the major leagues. You want people coming into their physical prime already have gotten enough experience at being a major leaguer to understand what it takes to be successful there.
Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!
Agree
but these fellas are not over the hill age wise. Always thought if the Giants could get a players years 25 – 33 would be very happy. Would prefer that over having a youngster at 22 years of age and the time they hit FA at 28 they price themselves out of the Giants budget.
