OT: KNBR Hosts

Whose your favorite? Personally for me its Fitz and Brooks without a doubt. The tandem seem to have chemistry and always seem to say what makes sense. Also never afraid to put a stupid caller in place. My least favorite would have to be either Damon Bruce or Balberi. All Bruce does is throw out horrible ideas, spread rumors, and ignore peoples valid points when made. With Barberi I just cant stand his approach to the Giants. "Just give Texiera what he wants even if its 200 million" I really think that the man is clueless when it comes to baseball. Sabean tearin him a new one was great to hear. He needed to be told that. Anywho, who is your favorite?

Fitz and Bruooks are the best. Murph and Mac are alright (although I don’t listen to the much). Ralph and Tom are tolerable sometimes. Damon Bruce is a stupid dumbface.

I was working part time out in San Ramon last month and I had to commute on 680 in the mornings. I had Murph and Mac on the radio during the morning drives and I learned they weren’t so bad.

I like Rod Brooks the best.

As long as Murph and Mac aren’t doing an interview, they’re pretty much tailor made for morning radio. Nobody wants to hear two guys bitching and moaning at 6:30 in the morning, and they do a good job of keeping the mood light for grumpy morning commuters. They also have pretty good interactions with their producers.

Ralph and Tom I used to listen to a lot, but now I mostly white noise them on the drive home just so I’m not driving in silence. Oh, if only the media player that fit my needs and my budget were on the market right now… A lot of people mention how unlistenable Ralph is, and I agree that he can be, but not many mention how annoying Tom can be. Just listen to him repeat himself over and over through a slew of dramatic pauses and it’ll drive you nuts. I find when the two are splitting voice time pretty evenly, they block each other from doing the annoying things that they do, but if either one gets on a roll… well… white noise city.

I haven’t listened to the other shows in a long, long time. I used to enjoy listening to Fitz and Brooks, so I’ll support them still. Bruce can go eat a poo. And I can’t fucking stand Gary Radnich and his act.

Drives me nuts. I believe Ralph has been dumbed down through his pairing with Mr T.

Oddly enough, Ted Robinson sounds so sober and smart when he fills in. Could be the competition, or he could really be a good style for Sports Yap radio, either way, Ted’s got

Everyonce in awhile he’d go off on a tear about how women’s sports are boring, and a waste of $$ – blah blah blah. It’d be fine if he just said “I don’t like to watch women’s sports it’s just not my thing” but he takes it to the point of women’s sports are so lame they shouldn’t exist.

I have to admit I haven’t listened to him in probably over a year. The last time was when he started in on a “Women stay in the kitchen and let the men watch the game” spiel I turned it off, haven’t listened to him again.

I, personally, will never buy a Body Sound product thanks to how horrible these commercials are.

My disdain for them is only bested by my disdain for the Crown Royal commercials that wouldn’t stop playing (also online) this summer, with the loser-rock song “Every King has his crown” that must have been the work of Barry Zito

My favorite is the end of the hour, when one segment goes a little long, so they go to commercial around 5:50. Then they come back at 5:55 to play a 1 minute musical interlude, then Ralph tells us, “You’re listening to The Razor and Mr. T, we’ll be back after this.”

I cant stand ralph barbieri or D Bruce

Both just wanna go all out for Manny (did the same with Tex) no matter the cost.

The worst is when they face questions of giving Tex 10 yrs, or giving manny 5 and how each player would really hurt the team in the later end of contracts like that with their performance and money they would be receiving and Barbieri says “The fans dont care about things like that”.

PLEASE do not speak for me.

by kvdp12 on Feb 17, 2009 10:35 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

he's right and wrong (but mostly wrong)

it’s true that (most (casual)) fans don’t care about the implications of a 4 year manny deal, they just want ZOMGDINGERZ.

Of course, if they DID get Manny for 4 years, don’t imagine for a second that they’d remember they were clamoring for it in 2012 when he OPS’s .700 with the defense of a half blind paraplegic for $25mil.

by Viliphied on Feb 18, 2009 11:06 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I actually like D. Bruce better than Barbieri

D. Bruce throws out a LOT of lame ideas and tries to amp up his audience with things that just don’t really carry a lot of weight in bay area sports. However, that being said, at least he still does the research and is more realistic in his approach. Barbieri just seems to mail it in and seems to have very little grasp on sports in general. I do like Tom though.

If it weren’t for Barbieri constantly pulling in awesome guests he would completely suck.

I find Ralph really puzzling. For a guy who is obviously such a huge Giants fan, you would think somewhere along the way he would have learned about baseball. He has the same understanding of the finer points of baseball and how MLB works that I had when I was in High School, but since I am such a huge Giants fan and a baseball nerd I spent countless hours learning about the Giants and the game in general since then (this is not to say I don’t still have a lot to learn, but I think I have come a long ways) and one would think Ralph would do the same.

I only like Tolbert. Brooks is OK. I hate Fitzgerald. He’s a know-it-all and he’s an annoying pro Notre Dame grad. I can’t stand Barbieri but I tolerate him over Damon Bruce. I’m not awake to listen to the morning show. And I tolerate Gary Radnich.

This is broadcast on KNBR but I really like ESPN Radio’s overnight host Bob Valvano.

I want to punch Barbieri right in her ovaries.

When Gary Radnich dies and spends eternity in hell, Satan is going to just lock him in a room and play each and every broadcast he’s done. His punishment will be to actually listen to the grating sound of his voice for all eternity. Nothing could be more appropriate.

I dig Brian Murphy, but Paul McCaffrey is insufferable. Tolbert doesn’t make my ears bleed, so that’s a point in his favor. I’m usually not in the car during Fitz and Brooks, so I haven’t had the time to truly form an opinion on them. Bruce, when I end my commute during his broadcasts, more often than not makes me scream, “That’s stupid! You’re stupid!”

With the exception of Giants games, I haven’t listened to that station in well over a year. I can’t support a station full of guys who claim to be experts on sports (or at least enough of an authority to warrant being paid to talk about it), and yet say things that make me wonder if they have ever watched a game in their life. Essentially every Ralph interview question:

“So do you think the Niners should have hired Mike Singletary, because I think he’s a nice guy and he says the right things and the players are behind him and every last fan already thinks he’s the Messiah even though he only put in half a seasons worth of work and he seems like a nice guy, but I don’t think they should have hired him yet I think they should have at least interviewed Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren and Jon Gruden and they really tied their hands when they hired him even though Singletary forced the issue by winning so the Niners didn’t have a choice there would have been such a fan uproar, so its the fault of the Niners because they won and they shouldn’t have, so what are your thoughts on this?”

especially when he went of for hours on Shaq free throws and how he should shot under hand…freakin priceless. I haven’t been the bay area in awhile and the VA doesn’t allow radio streaming so I haven’t listened latley but I liked Brooks with he partnered with Barry.

WOW.

Dude, I couldn’t stand Rick Barry. All his rants about free throws was such high horsed crap. The years he did the 12-3 show by himself, I was completely absent from KNBR (I couldn’t pick up 1050). Paring him with Rod made him almost tolerable, but I was quite happy when he left.

He’s the basketball equivalent of Tim McCarver; sure they both know the game, but they really need to STFU.

I listen to Murph and Mac in the morning on the way to school, for me they are the most entertaining, but not really good sports talk. The best overall show is Fitz and Brooks, they have the most knowledge, annd they are well connected to the teams (Warriors for Bob and Niners for Rod). Ralph’s voice annoys me adn Damon Bruce is Damon Bruce. I dont get to listen to Radnich cause im in school most days, so i dont really know about him.

The only things I can really listen to on KNBR are Warriors/niners/Giants games and Fitz and Brooks.

Their baseball takes are not always the best, but they are funny (at least, they are together), have good chemistry together and often make good points (usually on basketball).

Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
Only [hella] games left until the end of Zito's contract.

They are all pretty bad...

except when they do the pre-game lead in and interview one of the Giants announcers, usually Jon or Flem. In those cases they seem to step aside and let the announcer take center stage.

Murph and Mac are at least pretty down to earth. The rest of them seem to be enamored with the sound of their own voice and the “clever” things they say.

I like when Michael Urban is in. He can actually discuss baseball in an intelligent way, being a former beat writer. I also like Ted Robinson when he fills in. Pretty bad when the fill in guys are your favorite. Maybe because they haven’t been around so long they have worn out their welcome? Radnich, Murphy and Tolbert are pretty entertaining as well. I used to be a bigger fan of Ralph, but he lost me when he started lobbying for the Lincecum Rios trade.

I’m dreaming of the day when Radnich retires, they move DBruce into his time slot – I don’t listen at all from 9-12 or 10-12 or whatever it is. And then they can put Urban or Robinson in the 7-?? slot.

by Merope on Feb 18, 2009 2:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Ted Robinson is the only intelligent voice that comes on at KNBR. Too bad it happens only once in a while.

I think the producers have more interesting things to say during segments.

We’ll probably hear more from him now that he’s the voice of the Niners, but he keeps pretty busy with other work.

I hate when Damon fills in 9-12 when Gary is on vacation. He’s ok for what he does at night, but not in the morning.

Gary

Radnich is by far the most entertaining show. I don’t always agree with his views but I always get a kick out of his bits and the drops. His segment with Bruno is the 30 mins on KNBR, especially since it isnt broken up by commercials. I know a lot of people don’t like him because he comes off as an arrogant know-it-all, but I don’t think people get that most of its a work.

Murph and Mac should be called Murph with Mac, cuz its pretty much Brian doing all the talking and dominates all the interviews. Paully does have his moments, like the Lincecum song.

Fitz and Brooks are solid most of the time, except for Rod’s stuttering. I also find it strange when Rod try to act street one minute and then bust out some crazy intellectual vocabulary the next.

Don’t care for D-Bruce much. I can only tolerate his rants for so long. Larry Kruger was much better. BTW, Kruger just got signed by Mad Dog Russo on his Sirius XM station and is not doing an overnight show but I haven’t heard it yet.

The majority of the time I suffer through Radnich’s show is the 9-9:30 segment. I also like to refer to this as the “Gary won’t talk sports” segment of the show.

Probably is...

But it’s the only segment I hear. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt and just hope that at some point during his retarded show he actually discusses some sport.

Man....

Radnich is ridiculous. I turn on KNBR for sports talk, not to hear a guy ‘give a performance.’ I mean, please, is rants are just out of control and just off the map.

Rod and Brooks talk sports. Rod and Brooks are awesome!

Although....

Admittedly, I did like Gary’s bit when all those celebrities couldn’t say his name on some KNBR teasers. Good stuff.

I love the Pauly Mac interviews, they’re the best! It’s just a collection of disjointed questions with absolutely zero flow to it. He’ll ask a question, the guy will comment, and often times there’s a great followup question just dying to be asked. Instead, Mac goes right back to his script, and asks the next question. It’s like watching the Chris Farley Show, but without a funny guy hosting!

his interviews really are hilarious, I love the way he stumbles all over himself complementing the guest. The interview he did with Joe Starkey as he was getting ready to call his last 49er game was just priceless.

Ferrall

Anyone listen to his Sirius show on Howard 101?

by faust10 on Feb 18, 2009 4:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Nobody over the age of 17 should listen to Ferrell. His Sirius show is like his KNBR show on steroids, constant music in the background, a complete assault on the senses.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Feb 18, 2009 5:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

There’s somebody here in Sac that does that. Constant hip-hop or heavy bass music playing the entire time the show is going on. Annoying.

Scott Ferrall??

My two cents

Though probably nobody cares (NOBODY CARES!) about my opinion, I usually catch every KNBR show at some point every week or two. So please allow me to continue with my KNBR rosterbation:

Murph and Mac: I like Brian Murphy, as he’s kind of the “every man’s” sports fan. He’s a Giants fan, and a complete homer, but is fairly amusing and self-deprecating. (Plus his wife is hot.) Paul McCaffery, on the other hand, has no business being on sports radio. His only purpose is to slip in mentions of the Dead or the Stones at the most random, non-sequitor types of moments. He’d be happier on KFOG or KFRC or something.

Gary Radnich: Gary has kind of become a caricature of himself. I think senility is fast approaching for him. I generally listen to Jim Rome during this time. I know how many people dislike Rome, and all I have to say to that is you either love him or hate him. I love the schtick, and he has nearly as many inside jokes as the McChronicles.

Fitz and Brooks: Probably my favorite show on KNBR. I’ve listened to Bob Fitzgerald since he worked with the late Pete Franklin on “The King and the Kid,” but his chemistry is even better with Rod. Rod was excellent when he was solo on The Ticket 1050 in trying to bring a youthful, urban “rep” back when KTCT had a pseudo-rivalry with what they called “The Sports Geezer” – that is, until we all found out their checks were signed by the same person.

The Razor and Mr. T: There is nothing I like more than when the days become “The Razorless Mr. T.” Ralph Barbieri is an absolute joke, and the biggest hypocrite on the air. His sign off is “Angels Fly Because They Take Themselves Lightly,” and no one is more self-important than Ralph. As for Tom – Tom is Tom. He’s an ex-jock, and a laid-back Southern California. He’s entertaining, but doesn’t provide a whole lot of insight.

Damon Bruce: Damon is basically Larry Kreuger Part II. I remember both of them from “Sports Overnight America.” They’re the same guy, right? Aren’t we all Pedro Feliz? I find Damon entertaining, although he does have a tendency to talk over people whose opinions are different from his – but then again, we’re talking about sports talk callers here…probably not the sharpest tools in the shed.

However, overall – we should be happy with what we have at KNBR. I moved to Southern California a year and a half ago, and I still listen to KNBR online. SoCal sports radio is drivel, in comparison.

byrnzee aint too bad

I think byrnes brings a lot to the table. He plays in the NL West, he’s lived in the bay area and brings a different angle that a lot of the other broadcasters don’t have.

He’s not the best, and I couldn’t listen to him on a day-to-day basis, but I enjoy listening from time to time.

by curtman02 on Feb 19, 2009 2:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I’m as big a Byrnes-hater as you’re going to find. I just don’t like the guy. But around Christmas, I heard him filling in for Fitz and Brooks one day, and completely didn’t hate him. The 15 or so minutes I listened to, I thought he did a pretty good job.

My opinion may be influenced, however, by small sample size.

Radnich is a jackass. I happened to be in the car a lot when he’s on, and he seems to vary from irritating to annoying and almost tolerable.

Fitz and Brooks are by far the best. I actually enjoy their show, instead of just having it on for the hell of it. As other have said above, they work very well together, are both funny, and actually have a clue about what they are talking about.

Ralph and Tom. Sometimes its okay, often not. Tolbert is funny at times (though usually just dull), and Ralph can have something interesting to say on occasion, though for the most part, he just blabbers on some hobby horse of his—which only proves he doesn’t really know the game in question very well. What I do like about their show are the guests, such as Steve Young, who is always very interesting. And yes, as others have said, Robinson is excellent when he fills in.

I absolutely deplore Damon Bruce. Some times, I try to listen since I happen to be driving, and don’t feel like music at the time. However, I have never been able to keep listening, as I am always irritated enough by the idiocy to turn it off. This douchebag has not a clue about what he is taking about.

Adoptive Parent of Francisco Peguero. He can throw, he can run, he can hit(fastballs), and he's Dominican. What else do you need to know?
