the rise, fall, and rebound of jerome williams
i dont know if this is a feel good story since he made his own mistakes, but an interesting situation to follow. it wouldnt surprise me if he does get a chance since their rotation is so influx and inexperienced. crazy it wasnt too long ago when williams, foppert, ainsworth were the future of this team...i guess it evened out since cumster, cain, bummy, alderson will actually live up to that hype.
Williams got way too comfortable, and it cost him dearly.
His meteoric rise began in 1999, when he threw a no-hitter and hit three home runs in the same game as a senior at Waipahu High in Oahu, Hawaii. Shortly thereafter, the Giants made him the 39th overall pick in the First-Year Player Draft. Upon signing, he was sent to their Class A affiliate in Salem, Ore., and by August he'd already picked up a Northwest League Pitcher of the Week award.
Williams was off and running. High-A ball in 2000. Double-A in 2001. Triple-A in 2002. In April 2003, he arrived at The Show -- and put on a show.
Handed a spot in San Francisco's rotation, he went 7-5 with a 3.30 ERA in 21 starts. In 15 of those, he threw at least six innings. He allowed two runs or fewer 12 times. He became the fourth Giants rookie to start a playoff game since 1937.

Yes, we can say that for sure right now.
Also, the rebound is not a for-sure thing. I’m rooting for him, but let’s wait until he actually shows us something.

And yeahhhh, I’m not optimistic about Jerome’s chances. I loved him a lot when he was a Giant, but … I dunno.

I am glad that nickname is so preposterous it can’t catch on.

If you go to an A’s/Giants game in Oakland, you will hear many derivations of that. While waiting in line to go in a woman next to me just wouldn’t stop. She just went on and on, I finally couldn’t take anymore and said " enjoy it while you can, ‘cos you’re gonna lose today" and they did.

AT&T is probably the only ballpark, this doesn’t happen.

I was at that July 3 game where Tim pitched against the Cubs last year. Great bleacher seats for me and a friend. I stood up and clapped for our outfielders during pregame stuff and this fat asshole in a Cubs shirt kept yelling at me to sit down because he didn’t want to see Lincecum in his face all game. I was wearing my Tim shirt, so you see. I told him he’d better get used to seeing it in his face, because Tim was going all nine. It descended into dickwaving (well, figuratively for me) before I shut him up with some facts and figures on our favorite pitcher. He sat down and shut it for about two innings, then he tried to flirt with me and buy me beer.

We haven’t really figured out much more than pulling pigtails. We just do it in different ways as we get older.

Literally for him? That’s the kind of behavior they can arrest you for! Like Monty Python once said, just don’t take it out in public or they will stick you in the dock, and you won’t come back.

I think they’re calling him a big whore.

I hope Jerome can come back and pitch decently. I always liked him when he was with the Giants. I even have his autograph.

me too.
Also, I have Deivi Cruz’s autograph. I’m less optimistic about his rebound chances, though.

He could probably hit some doubles.

Rebound?
He must have bounced a few times.
Get it? Because he was fat? And fat is bouncy right? Get it?

i feel bad for jerome
for some reason, he felt that he didnt have to work hard once he made it to the show
then his father got ill, which caused him to experience depression, and instead of seeking out help, he dealt with it through food
the giants shouldve recognized this…they didnt
but let me point out, when other pitchers were juicing…and the juice was indeed plentiful in the giants clubhouse…he did not
i hope he sticks this time
he is a good guy and a very good family man

I loved Jerome Williams. His performance was one of my favorite things from the 2003 season.

Sucks for him, but he just couldn’t lay off the food. I never bought into the Dwight Gooden comp that BA gave him back in 2002/03, but he sure arrived with a flash. I remember his shutout vs the A’s, and then beating Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson head to head in the span of just a couple of weeks.

Is there much reason to hope for a rebound?
Other then the fact he’s “down” to 230 lbs?
Doesn’t really sound like it from the article. I still like him though and am absolutely rooting for him. I also like that its with the A’s.

I think there was a line in the 2003 Prospectus saying something along the lines of “Cain and Williams will soon be one of the best under-25 tandems in the league” (I think it might have been in the Top 50 prospects section). Unfortunately, someone will need to back me up on this – I can’t find any of my copies prior to 2004. I hate moving.

2nd chance?
Isn’t this something like his 7th chance? Also, Jerome Williams is on the A’s?
