OT: What was your first comment?
After reading Xathan's Open HAPPY Giants Images Thread (Yay!) I noticed some McCoven posting their first ever comment on the site and wanted to see what everyone else's was.
I would love to see a hodgepodge that old timers would understand and we'd have to explain to the new kids. so, post your "109!" followed by someone else's "garlic fries are the bestest."
Oh, If you have hundreds on comments I don't know how to go directly to your first one; I just looked at the date I joined then went to the MC archives and searched through a few threads after that date. Can someone post the non-dummy way of doing it?

Found mine the hard way
how k-rod dicked me over… again.
So some friends of mine convince me to drive from venice beach to anaheim (2 hours in traffic) because one of our female friends was bringing 10 girlfriends… i say ok. this one gal decides on national sports bar there because she is a die-hard angels fan (and, of course, a twit) and a game was getting out, and it was the player’s post-game hotspot.
so i’m sitting at this table with our friends, and this group of three blonde hotties was sitting behind us (yay). since i’m on my first beer and in no hurry to leave my table, i don’t approach them, but they keep smiling and looking at me. they also have about 12 empty amstels on their table. so finally, one keeps looking at me while she drinks, so i toast her my beer and turn my chair to talk to them.
all is going well and i’m ready to leave my table and just sit with them when one of my not-so-bright female friends grabs me to demonstrate to her friends how the rolled-up sleeves on my shirt are such and such length, and i’m trying to pull away to turn around and finish talking to these drunk hotties, but when i finally do FRANKIE F’N RODRIGUEZ has swooped in and sat right where i just was. wearing stupid orange tinted sunglasses. indoors. at 11pm. He also had kelvim escobar and jose guillen with him, so my plan to crack him over the head with an empty fizzles out. later that night i’m walking with my friends back to our cars, and i see the group of girls trying to explain to k-rod that no, they are not going home with him… i hate the angels.
oh, and ricki lake once hit me with her suv while i was walking past fred segal (she was just pulling out, i slapped her hood and yelled “watch it ricki lake!”)

A Giantsophile Memory. A little melodramatic, but so be it…
God knows why I took a liking to Dan Gladden in 1986. I was three years old, so maybe the long blonde hair did it. The next year, I remember being at a game where Mike Aldrete played center field and made a ridiculous sliding catch on the left center warning track, just in front of the chain link fence (a replay is on the Humm Baby 1987 retrospective video, the one chock full of Jefferson Starship tunes). I was four, so maybe it was because he got so dirty and people still cheered him. The next year, I watched a Beta video recording of Game 5 of the ‘87 NLCS every day when I got home from school. Vin Scully announcing, Vince Coleman scoring in the first inning, Giants respond with a run, four-run fourth, Joe Price relieves Reuschel and closes it out. Good times. Then, I discovered that my dad had also recorded Game 6, and, after watching that tape, I was never able to look at Candy Maldonado or Bob Melvin the same way again. 1989 came, and even though Kevin Mitchell was having the Proverbial Career Year™, Will Clark was the team leader, and at least one six year old couldn’t resist trying out his batting stance every time The Thrill came to bat on TV. I was there when Clark singled up the middle against Wild Thing, and that was that, finally convincing me. Giants fan forever.

dec 21, 2005. about eric byrnes.
Byrnes?? Now we’re really getting desperate. With the way that guy takes bad angles on every ball hit to him it would be a miracle if he could catch anything in center at Mays Field. We don’t need another backup outfielder. Sweeney and Ellison will do. It’s the infield where we need help. Next thing we’ll be hearing calls to get Shinjo back.

RE: Ranking the order of relievers from 5/1/07
At this moment:
Benitez
Hennessey
Correia
Taschner
Sanchez
Chulk
Kline
Hennessey seems to be the only one who can find the strike zone if his life depended on it. Although Correia only has one walk this year, which is surprising. Seems like he is always behind in the count. But, (I can’t believe I’m going to type this) I would call on Benitez to close a game over all others.
On a side note, what’s up with Wilson? Hasn’t pitched since the 17th, is he banged up?

crap, crap I got the timmy tickets when he was listed for Friday. I went to the first one and was planning on making it a recurring event. Damn.

My first comment in its magnificent entirety
I think a greater possibility exists of the cessation of universal expansion and of the onset of a final cataclysmic implosion than of Fonzie actually reaching the 3000 hit mark. Seriously, Edgardo’s achievement of the above milestone will usher in the end times. The rules of physics will no longer apply. Black will become white, up down and neifi an offensive powerhouse.
Surrounded by the dread sound of weeping and gnashing of teeth, we sinners shall kneel before the altar of Sabean and belatedly repent our misguided fascination with “youth” and “peak production”. Woe, the terrors that, stretching to the very crack of doom, unfold before me. Enough! My mind’s eye can endure no more.

In response to a fanpost called "Say NO to Gary":
Unless Matthew’s makes amazing catches above the center field fence on a weekly basis, he would definitely not be a prudent signing. The whole career-year at 32 thing smells fishy to me, and despite those wonderful sportscenter webgems, I remember some more accurate fielding statistics saying that Matthew’s is a pretty average fielder.

Your first comment beat mine by 12 hours. Mine was pretty epic though. It featured…
THE GOOD: A Nietzsche reference in the title.
THE BAD: Calling out Grant in my very first post on his new site for what turned out to be a mistake — confusing Kevin Mench with Laynce Nix.
THE UGLY: Randy Johnson Predicting Dustan Mohr would hit 30 HR’s for the Rockies (though he did have 17 in only 266 AB’s).

Think I found it. A little eye witness scouting report on Pat Misch. Interestingly, it wasn’t as negative as I often was on Misch. I remember getting into a few arguments with Steve S and Doc B on my overly critical view of Misch’s chances of being a major league starting pitcher back in the day.

I remember making this comment!
I was so mad that you guys were talking about how Matt Cain was sucking.
I don’t know what you guyys are whining about. Six innings of one hit, shutout ball with a 2/1 strikeout to walk ratio and a decent pitch count is so far pretty damn good.
I know that’s just the line, and yeah I’ll say he hasn’t looked overpowering today and the look on his face is a bit lost, but the fastball’s still hitting 95+ and there’s more life to that curve than I’ve seen this year.
Cain’s looking good tonight. I’ll take it.
I’m surprised. I would have thought my first comment would have been about Bonds.

My first non-gameday comment was this ... I mean, for god's sake...
As best as I can tell, draught comes from an early middle english word in the 13th century “dreaht,” which corresponded with the germanic word “dracht” (the ch later becoming the gh and pronounced with a k sound), and was in english pronounced without the f sound until around the 16th century, when the gutteral g/gh/ch sound from the germanic languages passed commonly through the less gutteral english filter (which is to say the two pronunciations mushed together in english) to make an f sound. At that time in english the spelling “draft” actually became common, because english spelling was largely phonetic until what, the 19th century, and the modern english word “draft” retains much of the meaning from its predecessor “draught.” The gh in “draught” comes from that hard sound in the germanic words that our modern pronunciation owes itself to.
Tonight is, of course, different. “To” is a prefix and can be here ignored, but the word “night” can also be traced to germanic languages, where the word was any number of variants on the word “naht,” which does not have that hard sound and was a cognate with synonyms from ancient greek, classical latin, the latinate languages, gaulish, old irish, russian, lithuanian, and so on.
Here I hit a roadblock because not being a linguist in either english or german, and not being confident that I’m imagining any of these pronunciations right, I’m not sure where the gh in night actually comes from. I’d be inclined to guess that if everything I’ve typed so far is right, that the gh in germanic languages developed into two sounds, the hard sound anda more airy sound, kind of like the way a c can sound like an s or a k.
Assuming that some of my above research/assumptions are inaccurate, a little extra research led me to http://www.yourdictionary.com/library/ling006.html where it would seem that the gh in draught, originally a gutteral k sound following the long u sound naturally became an f sound as the pronunciation softened over time (try making a light gutteral k following an ooo sound… it does sound like an ugly pronunciation of Uf!). In the case of night, I would venture to guess that the old germanic word naht was pronounced nacht or naght in early middle german, which then without the long u sound and with the softening of pronunciations fell away silently over time. My link helps to kind of clarify what I’m trying to say.
If I haven’t made sense (because on a technical level, I don’t know what I’m talking about), oh well. If I have, good. If you really want to know without a shadow of a doubt, I’d contact a good linguist of either german or english and ask them. One should be easy to find on staff at various colleges, with contact information listed online.

I think it’s too early to cut bait on Niekro, and that the trend toward increased plate discipline bodes well. The transformation isn’t going to occur overnight, but if he’s able to cut down on the hacking at slop, I hold out some hope that he can learn not to roll everything over to the left side of the infield.

Seeing I haven’t posted to the What brought you to McC anyway thread yet, I’ll get it in the 1st post thread.
I found McC while trying to find a reliable place to read about the G’s minor league teams without going to each of the team-specific sites. SteveS’s minor league updates here were exactly what I was looking for. Shame he doesn’t participate otherwise (unless he’s got a non de plume).
Anyway, I noticed that the site had a good blend of statBags, fanboys (and girls), pop culture geeks, and a weirdo or two so I went into full on lurker mode and started to read the various Diaries and main page posts.
I figured a thread would pop up where I could make a * me too * kind of post and ease into visibillty here. Here’s what I wrote in this thread:
Re: Two-parter….

Grant’s question was:
1. Name a random ex-Giant.
2. What was your first concert?
